Nikon Z 50-250 lens for Bird Photography with Nikon Z50 Camera - This lens also works with Z50 II

- I used my Nikon Z50 and the Z DX 50-250 VR kit lens to photograph birds from my back porch blind. In this video, I attempt to prove that sometimes preparation in attracting birds and hiding yourself from them is more valuable for bird photography than expensive gear. The 50-250 is my least expensive telephoto lens but it is sharp enough to make some nice bird photos if you can get close enough to them. In my blind I am about 10 feet from my perches where the birds land. This lens is also available with the Z50 II.

I made and scheduled this video around a week before the new Z50 II was announced. It was just my luck that it came out right after the new camera that goes well with this lens was released. It worked well with the Z50. It will probably work even better with the new Z50 II. :)
Excellent images Phil. Am anxious to see that lens on your new Z50 II.
Everyone should watch this video! You do not need the most expensive gear to go out and enjoy nature and get some nice pictures. Well done Phil.
Thank you and thanks for hanging out with me during the live stream the other night!
I like that setup when walking around the park. In the colder weather you can tuck into your jacket easily.
@@Steve-qi7hc that’s a good point! 👍
Its a good lens. Very light. Sharp enough. And as mentioned its a good gateway lens into nature photography and the longer (heavier) lenses. You won't be disapointed. Its range is versitle enough for everyday shooting and travel photography too.
@@xwin557x3 that’s a nice mini review! 👍
Wow. You did great work with that setup! I also admire your community you’ve built. It’s so positive in the comments and everyone comes back for every video! Your like/comment : view ratio is off the charts. Excellent job as always, Phil!
Thank you, Jalen! Very nice of you to stop by!
The Z50 seems like a very capable little camera. The camera lens combo makes for a great back porch combo. Would be interesting to see the Z50ii perform with the same lens. Fun video with great shots as usual, Thanks for sharing.
The shots should look the same with the Z50 II, it has the same sensor. They should be a little easier to bag with the bird eye detect autofocus that the Z50 II has and this camera lacks.
Amazing shots and a great help to take the decision to get this lens instead of 16-140
Phil - these are absolutely beautiful. Not only are the kit lenses so much better than they used to be but experience plays into it as well. Fantastic inexpensive set up!! 🤗
Thank you, JP! It is a much better lens than you would think it is.
I love the chipmunk as much as the bird photos! Excellent photos!
Thank you!
That's a great video! Love you showing the abilities of entry level gear, rather than plugging the newest/lastest/greatest gear.
I have a similar setup in the Canon system an older dslr crop sensor T7i with a 70-300 lens and I'm always amazed at the quality of the pictures that combo produces!
I would watch more of these videos for sure!!
@@toddbailey5198 thank you!
Hi Phil, I loved all your shots especially the chicadee, to me it looked like it was dancing. 🤩😊
Nice video Phil. I used this combo until i landed my 180-600. I still use this when I want a walk around with reach. It is sharp enough and produces clean imagery. What is also impressive is its compression. Very impressed with images during daylight hours of course. I definitely need a tripod to do video with this combo.
@@bigboi36 Thank you!
Love the Red belly Wood Pecker and the chipmunk very cool. I use my Zfc with this same lens and it works really well
I kind of regret selling my Zfc. Thanks for watching!
Really that the motors have got really good at the low end. No more whining, slow and cluncky motors.
Thank you for including that video of bird in end esp with no music, it was peaceful
@@amitkrupal1234 thank you! I do that sometimes. I should do it more often. I appreciate the comment.
That's really splendid! Indeed I possess this lens and sometime use it with the Zfc but you have to be quite near the birds to have them big enough in the frame. The hide/feeding station is a great idea, indeed.
Thank you!
The male house finch was my favorite. What a pose!
Thank you, Tim!
Oh this is such a neat video! The fancy gear can help yes, but it isn’t the be all and end all when it comes to taking great shots!
Thank you!
Great photos with affordable kit, Phil. Cheers!
Thank you!
Really enjoyed your video. I picked this lens up a year or so ago to take on a bus trip to the Bronx Zoo. I wanted something light in combination with the z7 ll and with maximum effective reach around 400mm. The results were far above expectation with regard to sharpness, color rendition and artifacts. Stabilization was excellent and allowed for slower shutter speeds necessitated by what turned out to be an overcast day. I later found my self grabbing the same pair for several other outings including a Magee boardwalk trip. I always thought I would end up pairing the lens with a better focusing APS alternative like the Z50 ll. The downside would be always having to pray for clear weather while knowing that some of my best photos come from birds during a downpour. I did buy a Z9 and Z100-400 lens as a backup!
Thank you! I have my eye on the Z 100-400. Maybe a used one.
Nice work as always Phil 👍
@@adrianalfordphotography thanks, Adrian!
This lens blew me away when I got it in a bundle purchase of a used z50. I've fished around all kinds of affordable ways to get a lens with some reach to get bird photos but this thing seems to always be the best option because it's so sharp you can afford to crop. For example I tried a M4/3 setup with the 100-300 II panasonic lens and it looked rubbish compared to this despite having way more reach.
That is very interesting, the M4/3 comparison!
I think Nikon made the Z50 and that kit lens for amateur bird and bug photographers. The 3 Z DX lenses cover every genre a new shooter looking for work would need. Hopefully they'll make a new fisheye lens. I liked that 10mm fisheye they had.
The Z50 is a great little camera. I am looking forward to trying the Z50ii with this lens. Also looking forward to using it on my 180-600. Thanks for the informative videos.
Thanks, Ron!
NIce shots! I can't wait until you get your Z50ii
@@ses4vols thank you! It is here. I put out a video this morning using it to make some landscape and bird photos. 😎
@ I’m hoping to watch it later today.
Your video is much helpful, you mentioned 10 feet (3 mtr) while shooting Carolina & Red bellied WP. Its useful info, last week I tried shooting sparrow in my backyard which are almost same size as Carolina, but I was using D3300+55-200 at almost 20 feet, it felt I need 400mm lens on D3300. Also there was lot of noise , might upgrade to FF with 200-600 lens
There’s nothing better than getting close to help your bird photography. It is more valuable, even than a big lens.
Thank you!
Amazing shots Phil! Do you have in signle point af?
@@Bruce_Lee yes I definitely recommend single point Auto focus for perched bird photography with the original Z 50. With my Z 50 II I use bird eye detect instead. Thank you!
@PhilThach The Z50II has some really great upgrades. I own the Z fc, which I bought in February 2022, and I love it. After almost a year, I realized that I really love taking pictures of birds.
Excelent content!!! Waiting for the Z50 II samples.
Thank you! Z50 II videos are coming soon!
Very cool, I think I need to go cheap sometimes. Sure beats always lugging my Z8 and 180-600
Thank you!
The nikkor 50-250 is a great little lens.which your fine pictures show.
Thank you!
So my question is how is the Subject Detection on the Z50II? Did it wander off or stayed on the subject? I had a problem with the Sony A7RV with the neighborhood squirrel using animal subject detection. I finally had to use my pointer finger to direct it to the furry animal eating the Live Oak Acorns. Had some difficulty with the A7CR also but it did better. Great Pics as always. Cheers!
@@randallbrander8157 this video was made before the Z50 II was announced. I used the original Z 50 for this one. I hope to go out soon for some bird photography with the new camera and release a video about it Wednesday. pushing all my other videos back
@@PhilThach I have too and I also have used the Megadap ETZ21 Pro with the 70-350mm APSC lens with the Z50. Including the Sigma 60-600mm for Sony and the Nikkor Z 180-600mm. It is great to be alive and have a lot of capabilities for photography and video content. The only thing is I am using Full Frame more than APSC nowadays. I still have got the Z50 and Zfc with an assortment of DX Lenses. I agree small cameras can pack a punch and give great results. Like the R10 the Z50 has a flash and I use it every time on a shoot. On the fence with the Z50II so I will be watching your videos quite a bit. My local camera store has the camera with both kit lenses 16-50 & 50-250 but I already have them and they upped the price of the Z50II to $950 instead of $906. I guess they have to make a profit somewhere. Best Buy has the Retail Price but they are always sold out or Out of Stock. Even online webstore. I always find a better deal though elsewhere. Grays of Westminster is selling the camera with a free battery charger. I came into your stream late last night and missed the unboxing. I will now do a Rewind to watch it again. Cheers!
Have you tried the Tamron 70-300 in z mount ? That’s a tempting lens
It is tempting. I have been considering it and the expensive Nikon 100-400 S lens.
Your (spoiled) birds for sure know how to pose! 🙂👍
Thank you!
Just bought Z6iii and 180-600. Eventually I plan to buy Z50ii with 28-400 for a light setup. The DX50-250 is really nice, but in most of my use cases will be to short.
I agree, you really need a blind for best results when using the 50-250 with small birds.
requesting you to make a review video of nikon z50 ii with 150-600mm for bird photography whenever its available to you.
I made a video yesterday, which comes out Wednesday morning, where I took the Z 50 II out for bird photography and ended up doing some landscape photography as well.
@ thank you ☺️
Hi Phil. Which of these lenses provides a better image: more sharp and with nicer blur? 50-250, 100-400 or 180-600? I want to buy something for z50.
If I could only have one, it would be the 180-600.
