  • KOX780F was running as a car park shuttle bus for the "Fleetline 55" Running Day at Wythall Transport Museum. Built in 1968, 3780 was the last Fleetline to be delivered to Birmingham City Transport with a single door. It is bodied by Park Royal and is equipped with the standard powertrain - Gardner 6LX engine and Daimatic gearbox. In the hands of a skilled driver, the semi-automatic gear changes are really enjoyable.
    Thank you for watching!

Fleetlines with Gardner Engines are the best! True classic!

The wonderful evocative Gardner growl matched with the fleetline whine, magic. 😊

Simply magic. Nothing will replace the sounds of a Gardner in a West Mids fleetline or VR, The spot when the driver drops her into 4th and the gearbox whine increases.
Must get down to Wythall and relive the early 1980s !!!

There is not a bus on the market today to match a Gardner engine on fuel consumption long life and ultra reliability

yes these double deckers & the bristols as well with this engine & bearbox had a lovely whine in 4th gear combined with the bark of the gardner engine, lovely sounding machines

Totally agree, Fleetlines aren't Fleetlines fitted with anything else but the Gardner engines in my personal opinion (especially the Gardner 6XLB ones that were used on the GM Standards in Manchester) - thus Gardner being a Mancunian thing!

Next best thing to being there!I had desperately wanted to go to Wythall to hear the Cummins roar of XDH 56G but sadly not well enough to drive over 100 miles at the moment.

Hope you would get well soon. I wasn't able to catch the 36ft Fleetline that day, but I did had a short ride on it at Showbus last month. The roar of the Cummins V6 was phenomenal, but it rattled rather loud. Its heavy steering and extra length took the driver a lot of effort to do a 20-odd-point-turn at the venue!

Immaculate and very nostalgic! Love the period headgear on the lady passenger!

Driven how they should be driven IMHO. the earlier fleetline gearboxes seemed to have a different gear change engine sound to the latter 4000/6300 series unless it was me.

You didn't need brakes on these, the gearbox ratio did the braking.

I can tell that's the same driver as the 'steering hard driving fast' video by the gear changes. Very slick but not rushed.

Exactly, that video is filmed right after this one.
