Created by producer Paul Hoefler and photographed by Willard C. Hahn, this early 1960s educational film "Operation Freighter" provides a look at the SS Hawaiian Farmer. At the time the "Farmer" was working the sea lane between San Francisco and Hawaii as part of the Matson Navigation Company aka the Matson Line (and now more well known as Matson Inc.). The ship was both a cargo and passenger vessel, one of at least four operated by the company (the others being the SS Hawaiian Refiner, SS Hawaiian Citizen and SS Hawaiian Rancher).
The film shows the ship and describes its layout and the purpose of its various decks and facilities. The roles of the ships crew are described and the movement of cargo on and off the ship.
Some notable content -- At 3:55, purebred cattle bound for the famed Parker Ranch on the island of Hawaii are shown. At 5:09 a sextant is used to measure the ship's position. At 17:50 circus lions from a circus that toured Hawaii, are shown loaded on the ship for a return to the mainland.
Hawaiian Farmer was a 7914 ton C-3 freighter, built San Francisco 1944 as the Sea Sturgeon. Matson bought it in 1947 and sold it in 1971 to shipbreakers.

Matson, Inc.'s subsidiary Matson Navigation Company provides ocean shipping services across the Pacific to Hawaii, Alaska, Guam, Micronesia, the South Pacific, China and Japan. Matson founded the historic Moana Hotel (now part of the Moana Surfrider Hotel complex) and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki on the island of Oahu.

My father sailed for Matson during WWII and later worked for Matson ashore in SF until he retired. Dad loved Matson, for sure.
It's a whole different company now but still the dominant freight operation to Hawaii.
I became an oiler on the Lane Vivtory museum ship. When we were sailing, we had all that crew. It was the best of times for me. I love that class of ships. Mike
I was surprised to see containers in 1964! I didnt think they become a thing until the late 70s. I made a trip on the Kopaa, bulk suger ship. It was a great run.
@@johnbeard3733 I've seen films showing steel containers on ships as early as the 1940s, though there were no gantry cranes to offload them.

... but I think that Your Labor on the Lane is more Vital than anything I have ever done on the 325.

How much has changed in the less than 40 yrs between this and when I first started shipping...
No Sparks, No Purser, all containerized cargo, 19-24 person crews, WOMEN in the crew, GPS replaces most forms of navigation (for better or worse), Ships almost always diesel not steam powered...
I was surprised by the crew size. I guess there are no deckhands or day workers as they were called here for upkeep anymore judging by how the current crop of container ships look as I sail past them.
@@alwaysbearded1 The big container ships have around 30 crew members, give or take.

Nuthin stays the Same for much of any Time...
Just look at the Maritime Era between 1890 and 1930 for another 40 years of Comparison... the Transition from Sail (SV) to Steam (SS) and the Motor Ship (MS or MV)
In each Case, Crews get Smaller, Ships get Bigger but one Thing is Constant:
The World is Dependent on the Merchant Seafarer to Convey the Goods no matter where it Originates or is Delivered...
... and for Them, we All should be Mindful and Grateful and Pray for Blessings upon Them All.

@@hertzair1186 I'm putting mine on a water base too. Trying to come up with a way to eliminate the gaps in the superstructure sections before I proceed

@@hertzair1186 I hate putty. I usually use stretched sprue and extra thin to fill seams. Sprue glue if possible. Very narrow space to fill
