  • "Soul Eyes"
from album "Mal Waldron - Soul Eyes" (1997)
    Mal Waldron - piano
    Jeanne Lee - vocals
    Steve Coleman - alto saxophone
    Andrew Cyrille - drums
    Reggie Workman - bass
    Label: BMG/RCA Victor
    "A soul, I'm told
Can be both hot and cold
So how is one to know
    Which way to go?
The soul is mirrored in the eyes
But how is one to know
When the whole world is full of such lies?
    So darling, watch those eyes
    And even more, those lies
And when you see them smile
    For a long, long while
Then you know you've found the one
    Who'll always, always be true
I know, that it is how I found you"

Thank you, I don't remember hearing this. Jeanne was an outstanding singer and very down to earth. I miss her very much.

From the first two vocal notes you know you are hearing something special. Written by Mal Waldron in 1957, the song became part of the classic jazz repertoire after John Coltrane's 1962 recording (he was one of the original sax players on the original recording in 1957). When Waldron re-recorded the song in 1997, he chose Jeanne Lee as his vocalist.

I've been looking for a vocal version of this tune. Jeanne Lee's vocal on this tune is simply breathtaking!! Love this rendition of lyrics too as I think it's more true to the feel of the tune. Love her vocal solo before a great Coltrane-reimagined solo by the saxophone. Thank you so much for uploading this!!!

Why are people still making jazz when we already have had Jeanne Lee? There no longer is any point ;)

My love knows no bounds, its timeless and endless. And I am deeply enriched in ways beyond what mere words can express. When I look into your "Soul Eyes" I am blinded by light of us. A beautiful and timeless Waldron composition.
