I love your honesty on these videos you described him perfectly he had a sound it was romantic and have some good moments but I never thought of him as an opera singer either
What I'd always loved about Andrea Bocelli is his that his resonance and emotive dynamics made him 'accessible' to an average listener. He became a household name because of his sound and approach. I see parallels to him and Joe Satriani in the guitar world, where his sound and style wasn't necessarily the ultimate in technical virtuosity, but he was accessible to the average listener. My hat goes off to all these greats who managed to find a way to be accessible outside of a limited niche genre. It's a massively understated ability.
He certainly has hit Cs. Not sure how operatically correct though. I'm not a great judge. To me, he is more satisfying to listen to than most traditional operatic tenors. I do like traditional tenors as well, but the color and style of Bocelli always hit me in a special way. I would say the Elvis of Opera sounds about right.
I always thought of Boccellis voice as pure soft velvet that just washes over you. Now Pavorotti was not soft velvet. He was powerful and astounding. But I cannot help but love them both so very much!
YOu're always spot on with your assessments, Ken, and thoughtful and kind how you interpret singers of all kinds. Well done as usual. I LOVE Andrea Bocelli. Such a beautiful operatic singer. 👏🏻👍🏻
Awesome! Another one of my all time favorite singers. I really appreciate you including singers from the classical side in addition to the rock singers you usually profile. Also, I agree with your assessment of Andreas voice and technique. I’ll go so far as to say that his top notes are in mixed voice rather than in full chest such as is the case with most tenors.
Now that was amazing. Not only I am a great fan of Andrea Bocelli and Pavarotti but I am also a great fan of a classical crossover singing group called Il Divo. I believe the singing technique of Bocelli and Pavarotti's singing are similar types of techniques to the 4 singers of Il Divo when it comes to the high notes and singing in the passaggio.
Oh Wow Ken!!! Your bold comment on Andrea Bocelli is exactly what I've been thinking all these years and people have criticized me for it. You might not believe it but I've had the exact same views on Bocelli that you have, I'm no expert, no where close, but it just so happens that those are the exact same views I've had on Bocelli.
Of the high note hitters in rock... Jim Gillette of the band Nitro comes to mind. That was pretty much comedy fodder for a while as people challenged each other to hit those notes on social media which led to hours of laughter for many. Even my 90's kids got a kick out of that. 😂 But yes, I do understand what you mean about Bocelli and Callas not using true opera technique and forging thier own paths with thier own stylings. They were both factually unique in thier paths and were both still wonderful singers regardless. They were the masters of thier own styles and techniques after all. My grandmother loved them both. Especially Callas interpretation of Ave Maria. It always brought tears to her eyes and mine too. Such beautiful artistic and emotional expression. Totally in love with that. Thank you for another wonderful video Ken. I love the subject matter that you bring up in each. You're a great content creator on the subject of all things vocal. I do appreciate that immensely. The info is valuable.
Ken I cannot believe that you take the time out like you do to explain the art of vocals. I am 62 and have watch every video of yours my signing is off the charts. The day you get it when your voice becomes an instrument the ranges of the voice using the face, throat, stomach, palet, open mouth etc. It's a science and you're a Master beyond anyone on the internet. Your very humble and intelligent in many subjects. But most of all you love Jesus Christ. So many young kids out there are missing a great chance to have a gift you'll always have. Anyone can sing once they get the message input that only comes from lessons. 99.9% of voice sites are garbage. Why go there and throw your money away when you can go to the Harvard of Voice right here and get the best education from the start. Listen to Ken people my God he knows what he is doing. I can sing with the best and hold my own. 3 yrs of listening to Ken. Get the course become great not good.
This is so well articulated that it is easy to understand even for the regular audience like me. Thanks, Ken Tamplin for producing so informative, so educative materials.
Ken, I’m enjoying the then and now of the opera singers. I admittedly don’t know very much about the genre, have never been to an opera, and have seldom heard these opera singers do their ‘thang’..lol.. however, I’ve heard them just enough to know who they are and to appreciate their skill and beautiful voices. I always love learning new things, so it’s fun to learn a little more about this genre! Thanks for all you do Ken!
Let me just say I absolutely love andrea boccelli he is a master when it comes to opera singing I love his voice and vocals he has his techniques and placement down love to hear him sing nessa dorma he owns that song love him and his amazing voice one of my favorite opera singers Ken he was high he could reach those high notes very well the side is amazing I think he is Ken love his version of the Lord's prayer so powerful and annointing off the song love him Ken 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hey Ken Great video. Would you considering doing then and now videos with Steve Perry, Joseph Williams and Joey Tempest? I think that would be interesting.
This is a good listen, thanks! Learned something today. Bocelli 'before' has a recording of A Te O Cara that you should listen to. I do love opera/ opera voices since was a kid. Opera critics on the other hand are an i grown group. Bocelli had a beautiful voice( and still can put on that magic at times). As Steven Mercurio said long ago...just enjoy it. Sorry for the guy whose wife listens while she works, ...maybe a gift of headphones?
Bocelli was my guy though, His voice was warm and heart felt. I can listen to him all day. He helped me out a bit with my chest range and THANKS TO YOU, i realized just how important it is to keep it up because I can get in the real high range. I felt i was getting a loss from head to chest. You are Awesome Ken. I always appreciate your proper critiques
What I like about you Ken is that you truly appreciate the beauty of singing no matter the genre! Since I am middle eastern, have you ever heard of Fairuz?
Listen to Bocelli when he sings Be My Love, there he sings an amazing C in the end and when he sings Because he sings even a D in the end. Tell me one singer who can sing all Andrea Bocelli's song live without autotune like he does. There is no one. The way he sings Ol'Man River is impossible to anyone else to do this.
Singing higher notes and holding them longer doesn't always sound more beautiful/better. It's an art to find the right balance. Of course Andrea being older, having done and still doing many concerts has an impact on his voice. I read that he also had had Corona. That also might have damaged his voice (permanently).
God almighty! Ken, you never cease to astound us with tremendously cool videos. I thoroughly enjoyed the analysis. Look up to you! All the very best!💖😘😘🥰🥰🥰
Hey Ken! If you can (pun intended) do a reaction of Fabio Lione. Amazing rock singer (Angra - Rhapsody) that also sings opera. He sang Time to say goodbye a few times on tour. He also did a song with the great Christopher Lee: "The Magic of the Wizard's Dream" And as always thank you for the great content.
Dear Ken Tamplin, here's a request; can you do a then and now video on Jose Carreras? And can you do a replacement singers video on anthrax; who did better? Neil Turbin? Joey Belladonna? Or John bush?
Gosh, that “messa di voce” technique (or whatever it’s called) was just awesome. What a feat! He also certainly has his own tone, his unique vocal color. Range is secondary. By the way, in the late nineties, my girlfriend back then gave me his album “Romanza” as a present. This video brought back great memories. Thanks for sharing, Ken! 🙏

Opera is not my thing but I greatly appreciate the talent and rigors they go thru to achieve that sound. It was an interesting break to see examples and hear technical talk about other styles than rock. Makes me think you should do Country. Huge, HUGE difference from Hank Williams to Hank Williams Jr. for instance.
Ken is being kind and generous here - he knows. I've never read a comment from anyone who knows what it all about that rates Bocelli - most say he's 'pop', doesn't have the power or projection because he doesn't use his voice correctly and wouldn't last five minutes if he had to do full opera. I'm no expert but I can hear the difference and there's even a guy called Paul Potts who got famous from a UK talent show who could sing Boccelli into the ground. I think he's got a nice tone in the soft notes and a very palatable sound. I've also heard comments about Boccelli always using a certain reverb setting that flatters his voice? (Oh and the run at 07:58 is not good whichever way you look at it).
Bocelli is good when younger, his voice is really gone now. He’s 65 years old now. People always compare him to Pavarotti. Their not even in the same league. Pavarotti sits alone in his class of Tenors. He is, by many, considered the best of all time. When people talk Tenors, Andrea Bocelli isn’t even considered among the top 20. This is just a fact. Sorry if that hurts some feelings, it’s just true. Ken nicely says the same thing in this vlog.
I truly never thought of Andrea Bocelli as an Opera Singer, he is a classically trained Pop singer. He lacks the power, technical skill of the greats like Corelli, Del Monaco, Mario Fillippeschi, Beniamino Gigli or Cesare Valetti. He is sings too nasal and too thin, which is not the sound you want from a proper Tenor. And age should not matter when it comes to technique, just look at Lauri-Volpi, he sang the High B from Nessus Dorma with power and control at 75 years of age, and he did not sound like mosquito Bocelli
I know this is going to sound cheesy but maybe we should have a new category call it "Popera". There are so many artists in the pop world and the rock World that are heavily influenced by opera that shouldn't have to fall under the scrutiny of all of the legalities expected of an opera singer.
So I grew up listening from everything from Glen Miller to Wasp to Mantovani,,, my Dad fault even the Wombles,,, thaaattt was my fault age 5 to 8 haha. I was lucky I suppose or maybe just different but I could hear variations in voices, granted I had no idea at the time how to ever sing or replicate any of it, I was just drawn into it, although I'm more of what my much missed Mum used to call "Kill your Mother feed your baby to Frog music" basic Rock music lol Journey to Tallica when one was feeling a tad risky lol, I think what I'm trying to say pal is I'm now feck me 49, but I have realised how much more music has crept into my mind by chance I don't know, but I appreciate it more now understanding what it takes, well as best as I can fathom to get from point to point. I didn't think as a kid I'd ever actually truly enjoy Opera instead of having to put up with it as a nipper, truly enjoying it when I was older was something I'd never thought I'd ever say 🤔😁 Oh and an idea or two for two Artiste's pal from two of my all time favourite bands, Danny "Don" Bowes from Thunder / Terraplane and Bob Cately from Magnum both amazing vocalists, you could also spring for Myles Kennedy but he's still got years on his voice yet haha. Keep up all you do Ken it's truly appreciated from us blokes who think we can but can't haha just wish I had access to you 30 years ago pal , you may of been singing one of my songs now baaaaaaahahahaha instead of me killing one of Mr Coverdale's
Mr. Ken, it would mean a lot to me that you see this ... 🙂 I started my musical "journey" 3 years ago. I'm doing my best, my professors are (for now ☝😅) satisfied with me. But... My dream ( one of ) is to get the opertunity to spend some time and to meet you ( one day ) in person. Until then, just keep making such good videos ☝ and i will do my best that we eventually meet in the future. I believe in 🌠 dreams.... 🙏 Regards, Filip Pivec. :)

One thing I wanna say about vocal technicality. Yes I heard through the years singers with a lot's of technical skills that they use it, pardon, missused in simply pop song and to me is so "out of place" that at first bored me but leter irritates me( one example is when I had a female soul singer, very impressive on soul music and blues but than on plain disco, ballads pop songs she was always "Show off" with all that soul way of singing that ruined those songs). On the other end I 've heard singers less technically but with a beautiful voice, talking about the tone and the expression, that make me think, do we really need all that skills? And for long time I concentrated my voce not to try to take any high notes or get a better technique and now that I passed the 60 and still manage to do a decent job as vocalist guitar player entertainer doing gigs both plain acoustic and with all backing music. You are right when you say that Andrea Bocelli doesn't have the top technical skills, but still.... but with his voice and personality I've seen moved people weeping and almost rich a spiritual joy when he perform and that kind of skills are not owned by everyone.
Ironic my love of Luciano Pavarotti lead me to Andrea Bocelli. Bono from U2 helped write a song called , Miserere with the Italian Blues singer of Italy Adelmo aka Zucchero Fornaciari ( sugar) alright ! Long story but in Italian Zucchero means sugar and I guess Adelmo kept his nickname from his English teacher who use to call him Zucchero as his stage name and if you ask me he should just change it legally to Zucchero being noone calls him by his real name Adelmo. Any note, ( my word ) 😊 story goes Luciano Pavarotti turned down the offer to sing Miserere and told Zucchero & Bono that they should have Andrea Bocelli they took the advice and it was Andrea first huge hit. I never would of really gotten into Andrea hadn't it been for Luciano Pavarotti actually turning down this song . As for Zucchero I would of never of been introduced to his awesome raspy voice of blues. Just great how these opera singers Luciano Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli crossed over again, I give the props to Freddy Mercury for he was the one who started mixing Rock with opera. Next thing you know you had Celine Dion, Bryan Adams , even Ed Sheehan singing along side opera greats. Thank you Ken excellent as always .. Blessings 🤘💜🙏🏻👍✌ Ps If you hadn't heard Zucchero the blues singer of Italy well, you'll be in for a treat should you . Peace ✌
Andrea really isn’t an opera singer…maybe “pop opera”. His voice doesn’t project well, he needs a mic to be heard. His voice lacks the round, vertical character needed to be a real opera singer. But he has a pleasant sound, and people seem to like it.
Can someone explain to me why people more tend to praise opera singers for their high notes, but don't praise rock singers for their high notes? I don't want to offend anyone, and don't try to take away anything from opera singers, they're really awesome and talented! I'm just really curious. What so different in opera singer hitting C5 in chest voice, and Ronnie James Dio, for example, who hit those high C's everyday and twice on Sunday's 😁 and he could go even higher with his chest: to D, and even to E sometimes. I'm not a professional, so I might be wrong, so please correct me :)
@@kentamplin i know, I don't talk about you specifically, Ken :) maybe I'm too bad at explaining :) I mean, people usually say that opera singers are kind of higher than rock singers. It's like they're elite, and rock singers are not. Maybe it was opera singers who say that, by the way haha but I did heard it many times.
Good stuff. Bocelli sang everything messa de voce, which is where singing is headed. In the end, we're all going to be singing exactly the same, just like J. Bieber. I get that people can appreciate a warmer sound at times, but there's little versatility in that sound. Why do you think so many singers gravitating to this type of colorless sound?
I accidentally discovered Andrea just a few years ago and still have heard non other that comes close and I listen every single night.

But the thing that makes it more interesting to me is his pettiness.
I get zero money for this video because I don't own the musical

The only person that can monetize it would be Serafino since he
apparently owns "Don't Stop Believing".
His net revenue on this video so far would be approximately US$7000.
(or whoever the publisher is that owns this song).
But even more interesting is that Serafino has very few videos that
hit 1 million views organically like this one has done in just 4
months time.
So Serafino is so petty that he would rather eat $7000 in revenue and
lose an incredible amount of promotion from a third-party source that
drives traffic to his website and to his other artists including the
band itself. Meaning that he would rather have the band and publisher
suffer because of his own ego.

I mean he is definitely not as loud as other tenors. And I don’t agree that he’s nasal. And sometimes he can project his notes, but not always.
You should see the difference between Alice Cooper then and now!!🤘
The only Opera I know of is Woody Woodpecker , Barber Of Seville :)~~
Good 1 one take I just remembered Bugs Bunny also
I know this is going to sound cheesy but maybe we should have a new category call it "Popera". There are so many artists in the pop world and the rock World that are heavily influenced by opera that shouldn't have to fall under the scrutiny of all of the legalities expected of an opera singer.

Firrrssst!!!!!!!❤️😂😂😂
🏆🏆🏆
He hit Cs. Just search for his rendition of Che Gelida Manina. Opera purists generally don’t care for him, from what I can tell.
I didn't think as a kid I'd ever actually truly enjoy Opera instead of having to put up with it as a nipper, truly enjoying it when I was older was something I'd never thought I'd ever say 🤔😁
Oh and an idea or two for two Artiste's pal from two of my all time favourite bands, Danny "Don" Bowes from Thunder / Terraplane and Bob Cately from Magnum both amazing vocalists, you could also spring for Myles Kennedy but he's still got years on his voice yet haha.
I started my musical "journey" 3 years ago.
Regards, Filip Pivec. :)

Nathan Drake of Shaman's Harvest then and now.

Andrea Bocelli is my wife’s ‘getting down to work’ music. I’ve had to listen to hours and hours of Bocelli, that I bought for her, but I hate it.
You're a giver!
We talk about the range of singers here all the time...
The only thing I would change... is that he was single.!****
:-)
