Yes he is technically a top tier but the reason why people played gogeta blue and labcoat is not JUST because they were good characters but also because they were easy to control and we’re still strong when played non optimally, trunks is a top tier but he has a much higher skill level requirement and much more of a penalty when played unoptimally
The level 2 doing more damage when the first hit whiffs is actually a reference to how its used in z where he uses burning attack which frieza dodges and then trunks teleports and does a shining slash which finishes him off
They should make the burning attack plus af if blocked, so it can guarantee a followup ss or flip mix from Trunks. That should give the opp an incentive to do something other than tank it, like the show.
I think you made a very good point about people ignoring Wawa’s performances with Trunks. He proved that Trunks can be effective. But the overlap of effectiveness and high skill ceiling has a higher peak for Trunks than probably any other character BECAUSE of his movement options. I played Trunks off and on for most of this game’s life, and I’m not a pro or anywhere close, but Trunks is the only character I’ve played who makes me feel simultaneously unbeatable AND like it’s impossible for me to win. Legit, sometimes his EX flip feels like the strongest tool in the game. Like it’s straight up busted and should be removed because it’s too strong. But all it takes is that one day where you can’t quite control it… Then suddenly you realize why it has such high potential. TL,DR; Trunks stands with the top tiers in terms of all-around effectiveness, but requires much more execution much more frequently than any of them
Yeah, Trunks is definitely up there; at LEAST high tier. Your video format reminds me a lot of LordKnight back when he focused on DBFZ. Can't wait to hear more from you on other characters!
I’m pretty happy with where the character is at after the buff. The level 2 damage still got me a little sour, mostly cause they gave Vegito level 4 in the same patch. I honestly want it to do a little more damage, being able to deal damage through enemy sparking would be nice. Also an air super, it’s very weird to me that Trunks doesn’t have one. He’s a very airborne character. I feel like Finish Buster (shoutout Asakura Clan) would be sick. I’d also love Galick Gun for Trunks. Father-Son Galick Gun goes hard, idc. Honestly, fuck it. Make Galick Gun grounded and give him both. I want the Galick flavor. That shit is tight. Purple beam gang. I think the video is pretty tight btw. I’ve never found Trunks’ ki-blast invul sword to be too useful in games, but I’ve only ever really played online. I could see it being a lot more useful offline and tbh in the hands of a better player. One day, I’ll probably be able to make use of it online, but I’m still bad. Gonna consider this video next time I hop into the lab with my sword boy for sure though. Thanks so much for this, INZEM. It’s things like this, high level character analysis, that I feel like Trunks is REALLY missing. I don’t get why no one really picks him up. Hopefully the new patch will stir up some excitement, but from what I’ve seen Trunks seems to be as popular or less than before. More other characters I feel are being highlighted Baby, SSJ, and Blue Vegeta. Frieza, Z Broly, Whatever is going on with the meter nerfed characters, Krillin, Jiren, Cell, GT. It feels like everyone is coming back. Everybody is viable now, which I love don’t get me wrong. That’s such a fucking fantastic feeling in a game like this. I do feel, however, that Trunks kinda drowns in the sauce as far as top tier players are concerned. This kind of character discussion is what I feel is really gonna make this character shine. Being that he’s a technical character doesn’t that just kind of make sense? Anyway, that’s about all… four paragraphs later. If you did read all of this feel free to continue discussing in the replies. I might show up late, but I love this character and would like to improve if I can. Also, thank you for your time. You didn’t have to read this, but you did. I think that’s pretty cool.
I didn’t remember about Wawa’s Trunks from Lotus’ video. I need to go check that out. Ignoring the character because of the name is crazy, of course it’s high execution, cause Trunks is a high execution character. Wawa’s just good enough to use Trunks to the fullest. On Trunks as a support, I do feel like INZEM makes a good point. He’s sort of like Krillin. The outstanding difference there being I feel like Krillin is a vastly better support character with insane screen control out front. He’s also small, which comes with its advantages and disadvantages, I feel. Possibly more advantages since DBFZ often helps force combos back into place, but I’d take that with a grain salt. Krillin’s level 3 okie is probably on par with Trunks’ with his crossup EX afterimage (which is fucking sick, I can’t hold. Krillin players eatin fr). Rocks will never not be insane to me, and senzu beans can be REALY fucking annoying if you know how to use them. Those plus the chargeable air ok beam makes me feel like Krillin’s got more gas than Trunks on screen control and support, but Trunks has his strengths over Krillin with air mobility and beefy, tall person normals. Not to mention the sword. Krillin probably has the advantage in Zone 3, but Zone 2 it gets chaotic, and Zone 1 is Trunks’ for the most part. That’s how I see it at least. As said before, feel free to continue discussion below if you’d like.
Inzem my guy... for the level 3 mix just input ex flip hold forward for a second to get the distance (it curves on its own) then hold backward (or the direction you came from) for the cross up or forward then downward for same side (you have to steer the entirety of the way)
Inzem man you have got to talk about how absolutely insane gotenks is and how well he works with so many characters, especially zamasu and the bully. Also in my opinion gotenks is like top 5 to top ten-ish
What's great about Trunk's level 2 is that when he is your anchor and last character you can use the level 2 to confirm your level 3 from full screen for 5 bars.
Your video demonstrates the trunks issue perfectly, everything you said is right, but all the while you fail to execute him correctly. That’s why not a lot of people play trunks, he’s arguably the hardest execution character in the game to be consistent with. Or should I say there aren’t a lot of “good” trunks players. On paper he’s phenomenal, arguably top tier, but in practice….well there is no practice because no one wants to put in the work to perfect his movement lmao. The reason people say he’s like bottom 3 is because remove 214H he essentially is. I hate to say that move makes the character, because now he has other mix with airdash out of flip and his neutral is still good, but let’s be honest that move makes the character.
Inzem is spitting with the whole Wawa take. If a dude is doing extremely WELL with a DIFFICULT character and is finding all of their strong suits and weaknesses, they should go to said player for notes and to get a better insight of said character.
Literally all trunks needs is more hitstun on his 5s, an extra 150-200 damage on his level 2, and it would be great if they could either give him his airdash back after an ex flip or make his ex shining slash cause a wallbounce so he can convert off it meterlessly. If he got these things he’d be top tier. Hell even with just the 5s hitstun and level 2 buff he’d be a solid high A/low S tier character.
The issue with hard characters is they're almost never top tier in any game. Why would I work harder? Cuz I like the character haha. These videos are super important imo: reminding people to play for fun first. If you're not having any fun, you're not gonna win any tournaments.
This patch is pretty wack, entirely because of beams imo. Most the combos are all homogeneous again after years of diversification. Super dash cancels on whiff are super lame. It fundamentally messed up the rock paper scissors interaction between ki blasts, SD, and beams. Also 2H... But now that's the only viable option if you see someone whiff a beam. Feels like it encourages spamming more than any prior patch.
I agree with a lot of your points but he's high execution so it's hard to implement. I think if you learned him and played him at high level you could show off what you're saying. If that makes sense.
If you DCH into Trunks level 1 and whiff it on purpose, while holding for the level 2, it will do more damage by itself than level 1 followed by his level 2
idk if you would be willing, but I'd love to see one of these types of vids for Videl. She's super underrated and there's not many new and relevant stuff on her. Also her c assist kinda shnasty
I never believed in the "Trunks is bottom 5" propaganda, but I can't see him as anything higher than mid-tier. He has potent mix-ups if you know how to execute them, an annoying neutral tool in Change the Future, and a decent neutral skip in EX flip, but that's kind of it. I will say Trunks in Spark is pretty wild, though. A Trunks who knows what they're doing in Spark is one of the scariest things to face. Those Trunks Spark mix-ups go crazy. All in all, he's a lot better than most people give him credit for, but outside of Spark I don't think he's anything crazy imo
The only correct take. Good video tho and its cool to learn some new stuff here, but its also why i kinda stopped playing him, its too much effort to play him efficiently (By contrast i play zamasu & he feels far more rewarding to play, especially after his ridiculous flight & orbs buffs a season or 2 ago, he really rewards your creativity and i like that.)
Even last patch I didn’t think he was the worst. I’d argue bardock is the worst now. So power crept with nothing special about him and he is very meter dependant
Bardock is definitely not the worst bro lol. He’s very good. Not top tier but good. Still has top tier neutral, good buttons, good frame data, a 7f low 2l, good damage, an anti air auto combo like ss4 gogeta with an absurd hitbox, a very fast lariat that goes hella far, a level 2, all his assists are very good etc. Tbh all he needs is for them to make his ex lariat gel into vanish again like it used to, give it a wallbounce so he can convert off it meterlessly, and buff the range on his 5m.
@@hatchell18 I definitely agree with your buffs. His ex lariat requiring vanish to keep comboing nerfs the damage of the combo and wastes a lot of meter which is why i say he’s meter hungry. Extending the range of his 5m would be so useful. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been blown up due to the 5m just barely missing. I’d argue his damage and meter gain are nothing special. An optimal combo doesn’t even break 5k damage and build 1.5 bar unless you use assists which is a resource you could use elsewhere. Characters like ssj4 gogeta can do that off a bnb. I’m not saying he needs that tho the buff to ex lariat and some sort of mix up would be good bc rn all he has is superdash mix which is very risky. I say giving him his old 236m would be good and more fair than his old lvl 3. I think he could use a better crossup button too. His j.m whiffs very easily unless you’re very far and by then the crossup is very reactable. Making his gut punch always wallbounce would be good too so he doesn’t have to vanish (nerfing damage and wasting meter). That move isn’t a mix up, just a conditioning tool. I feel like you should be rewarded for landing it since it’s just a mid and very easy to react to with mashing.
I would play trunks I just don't know how I would put him on my team and idk how to do his flips btw my team is Goku black and roshi I change them around sometimes so roshi could be point sometimes I just don't know who would be the third
Lets not forget when you use his lv2 it blocks lv3 atacks for a short time and he can slip out with the swordflash and punish the other player. Last time i played i manage to bait out goku black lv3 and for swagging i counter with that. It felt divine.
You can use it to punish goku gt using spirit bomb to escape the corner as well. I use ss4 a17 and trunks, my whole team can punish that shenanigans lmao
I don't doubt that trunks is actually good, but none of the proa that say that he is good have put their mouth where the money is. None of the pros that say he is good play him. So how good is he really? No one is willing to actually play him.
Honest opinion, in TED Talk format: I think this video shows that Trunks is viable, not that he’s anywhere near top tier. I also just don’t think that’s the problem with the game at this point; I think every character is viable, and what distinguishes lower tier characters is that they don’t excel at anything or that their “well rounding” isn’t enough to make up for not excelling at one thing. Why not have every character excel at something? (or be so well-rounded that it makes up for it?) You yourself say you can’t do his level 3 mixup or 50/50s because you don’t play the character and I think that’s also part of the problem. A lot of characters can do some truly crazy shit with high execution and all Trunks can do with high execution is keep up and be viable. Don’t get me wrong - if someone actually shows competitively that Trunks is way better than I think, I’ll absolutely eat my words. Right now I think his problem is that he needs too much meter to be a top tier point; his assists aren’t good enough to be a top tier mid; and he kinda works as an anchor but not extraordinary at a high level. We’ve seen Arcsys give insane shit to characters we never thought they would, so I won’t really speculate on exactly what it is, but if I were them I’d focus on solidifying him as top tier in one position. Maybe go a somewhat similar route to Yamcha and give him Bully armor or something, idk. Make him really scary on his own... I don’t see why not.
Right, Wawa proves Trunks can do that, BUT NONE OF US COULD EVER PLAY HIM LIKE WAWA! Trunks is really hard to master while other characters take no skill to win with and are more consistent in it, thats what makes Trunks low tier
I’m a firm believer that Rose Goku Black (who is low key just a mid tier) is just a better trunks. They share pretty much the same strengths outside of Trunks’s level 3 mix. But then you have a halfway decent command grab with actual good pressure on Goku Black’s side of things.
Nah bro I main gb and he’s way worse sadly. His command grab is total garbage outside of combos, he has to spend meter still to get an skd, his neutral is top tier but trunks has ex flip so his will always be better lol, his level 3 mix and mix overall is worse, he doesn’t have a level 2 etc.
@@hatchell18 I main both. Ex flip is just gonna give a left right mixup anyway since Trunks’s low option is nonexistent. Ex teleport mix with GB is the same in that regard and less harder to control. Ex flip in neutral really isn’t all of that since you cannot guard once you’re in the motion and trunks doesn’t have a single air attack to check people SDing him. It’s quite literally only good for jumping over broken assist (Ui Goku C assist might still hit you lmao) or giving a left right mix. Your only saving grace to try and steer towards the ground fast enough to 2h. Ex god slicer + assist behind that is probably more broken than any neutral skip Trunks can perform. Plus he has better “sword normals” ironically. And GB doesn’t need to spend meter for sliding knockdown at all unless you overextend. The man sends people to the corner for almost nothing most of the time where you can just medium god slicer people.
@@trapmatrix5942 trunks has ex shining slash for mix too and his ex flip can be used to solo mix even midscreen. He’s also got way better neutral with his ex flip
@@trapmatrix5942 also yes he does have to spend bar to get skd unles he’s in the corner bro. You can’t use medium godslicer miscreen you have to use ex godslicer. He also can’t jump over assists etc with it like trunks can with his flips
@@hatchell18 Mix is not everything. Plus no one cares if Trunks can ex shining slash you. His reward is abysmal off of it. And solo mix with Trunks’s flip? Fake as all hell my guy. And I already stated that GB puts people in the order for nothing. I already know medium godslicer is corner only, but you’ll be in the corner lol. Plus his normal combos give skd anyway. You don’t even HAVE to use godslicer.
@@INZEM Tbh bro he could definitely use more hitstun on his 5s and an extra 150-200 damage on his level 2. That’s genuinely all he needs, his level 2 is trash and the hitstun on his 5s is horrible. If he got those 2 buffs he’d be amazing. I’d also like to see them give his ex shining slash a wallbounce so he can convert off it meterlessly OR give him his airdash back after an ex flip. But he’d be just fine with just an extra 3-5f of hitstun on his 5s and slightly more damage on his level 2.
I'll believe he is not top tier when someone, anyone gets in the top 8 of any tournament with him, heck, even top 16. His problem is he is skill based, why would you play trunks and think, when you can play pretty much anyone else without thinking? You need your license, and they don't give those to anyone.
You say this when wawa has literally performed well with trunks at tournaments. I understand, at the time he was the best player in the world, but him performing well shows that the character’s strengths are relevant at the highest level. Keep in mind this was with a much weaker version of trunks as well.
@@TuxedoCat113 valid arguments, but we have to remember that a lot had changed since then, my point is, what would make him good, is very circumstance based, and it requires a lot of skill to do it, you need to be an absolute great player, and if you are that, why would you play trunks, he can be great, but that's not easy to attain. See it this way, if a regular skilled player picked a top tier, he could get a win here and there right? He knows the basics and with a tip tier he can manage to get a win. Would that same player get the same amount of wins with trunks on his team? Keep in mind that for him to get trunks on his team, another top tier player needs to leave the team. Not the best scenario I know, but that's trunks reality. He may be top, but no one is going to play him, and that was my point. And if that's the case, how top would he really be?
He’s actually trolling, if you think what you’re saying is remotely practical, play him. Also the Wawa argument, he just used his C assist to mix w 4geta and rinse repeat. #BuffTheSword
Nice analysis, is Krilin good? I have a lot of fun playing him but there is no guide online for his mixups, setups etc. I like to pair him with Jiren since Apologyman showed you can counter with Jiren, special tag Krilin and do his rejump, really fun!
Krillin is top tier. He was top tier last patch and got nothing but buffs. He's pretty hard to execute though. Watch GarlicBread (But you probably already knew that)
@@INZEM People in this community can't do math. Even when it's explained that trunks lvl2 at most does about 1% less damage (in total health bar) than the strongest level 2's bar tien, they still shout from the mountaintops that it's trash because it isn't the best.

Good video tho and its cool to learn some new stuff here, but its also why i kinda stopped playing him, its too much effort to play him efficiently
(By contrast i play zamasu & he feels far more rewarding to play, especially after his ridiculous flight & orbs buffs a season or 2 ago, he really rewards your creativity and i like that.)
when we getting the Cell character analysis my guy
Lovis would like to see this
hey what is the background music?
I have those headphones
Even last patch I didn’t think he was the worst. I’d argue bardock is the worst now. So power crept with nothing special about him and he is very meter dependant
Bardock is definitely not the worst bro lol. He’s very good. Not top tier but good. Still has top tier neutral, good buttons, good frame data, a 7f low 2l, good damage, an anti air auto combo like ss4 gogeta with an absurd hitbox, a very fast lariat that goes hella far, a level 2, all his assists are very good etc.
Tbh all he needs is for them to make his ex lariat gel into vanish again like it used to, give it a wallbounce so he can convert off it meterlessly, and buff the range on his 5m.
baseku is the worse
@@INZEM he’s better then yamcha😂
@@INZEM I’m just curious, why is baseku the worst for you?
The thing is. Its not trunks being bad. The fact is none of us are good enough to play him
Porque ya no juegas y subes videos de gears of war 5?
(or be so well-rounded that it makes up for it?)
You yourself say you can’t do his level 3 mixup or 50/50s because you don’t play the character and I think that’s also part of the problem.
Trunks is really hard to master while other characters take no skill to win with and are more consistent in it, thats what makes Trunks low tier
so basically what your saying is the character is bad because the player is bad?
@@_eggcelentt yes
Was there a audio problem in the middle of the video or are my headphones smoked
Inzem, what would you say that needs to be buffed on trunks to make him tier that would be reasonable
Nothing, he’s really good rn
@@INZEM Tbh bro he could definitely use more hitstun on his 5s and an extra 150-200 damage on his level 2. That’s genuinely all he needs, his level 2 is trash and the hitstun on his 5s is horrible. If he got those 2 buffs he’d be amazing.
I’d also like to see them give his ex shining slash a wallbounce so he can convert off it meterlessly OR give him his airdash back after an ex flip. But he’d be just fine with just an extra 3-5f of hitstun on his 5s and slightly more damage on his level 2.
300 damage honestly is pitiful, I didn't know it was that bad.
Most level 2’s do an extra 400-500 damage. So it’s 100-200 damage worse. If you whiff the first part then it does 400 damage though
Hes nice if you know how to rejump and yk his loops other than tht base player would says his mid tier
Watch GarlicBread (But you probably already knew that)
This was unlicensed but still a good tutorial nonetheless
Dude wtf
not a single player on trunks in top32 btw

trunks' lvl2 is so bad, there are probably lvl1's that do more damage alone than his lvl2 combined lol
trunks lvl 2 does more than 1100 damage...
@@INZEM People in this community can't do math. Even when it's explained that trunks lvl2 at most does about 1% less damage (in total health bar) than the strongest level 2's bar tien, they still shout from the mountaintops that it's trash because it isn't the best.
