As an New Romantic of that time, I LOVED the early 80s, from 1980-82 was the BEST, the dressing up, the new electro synth music. Hard to believe time has gone so fast since then...
Leigh Bowery was an icon My Sister once said to me " Is it Boy Girl man woman Or Drag king Queen or from Out of Space " My Reply was that was Leigh Bowery. I took her to see Minty at Pop starz As her first live Gig !!
Legends in their own minds but in reality just a group of young people playing dress up at night. I remember cha cha in Heaven Tuesday night. The music played was early dance, if I recall rightly. The actual music created by the scene (Spandau Ballet etc ) was dire pop without soul.
As a teen in the late 70's & 80's....we didn't have the money that (my) kids have today!...if you wanted to wear something, you made it yourself!...the more outlandish the better...MTV was new & very exciting it was all about the music & fashion & hair..& Countdown on Sunday night!....after 2 decades of bland, I'm seeing a resurgence in creativity in young people through Cosplay!
Mithril P Cosplay surely represents a retreat from the adult world into well defined childish fantasy where most of the looks are bought off the peg? Creativity is really about being free to take risks and this is increasingly difficult in the risk averse society that we have evolved into.
+pigknickers Exactly, cos those demented control freaks otherwise known as the new world order are clearly, from what i have recently witnessed & experienced, they are trying their darn hardest to kill us sensitive, creative, artistic types off and i for one am Sick of it!
Beyond fab docu. Could have gone on for hours as far as I'm concerned, for there were so many people around this rather creative scene back then and there is so much material to chose from seeing that London was a mega-culture-"factory" back then, perpetuating itself effortlessly, daring every great creative mind to go one better. It's always a delight to see the divine Scarlett Cannon and Princess Julia, who've helped shape popular culture far more then they'll ever know or will get credit for.
+fahnke Yes thumbs up & thanks cos it's so very morish taking a trip down that Old English Lane which transports me back to my New Romantic Days in the trendiest clubs in London Town.............................................................................oh yeah!
The 80s was fabulous ppl would laugh at my coloured hair and styles and today ppl dye their hair how we did and its normal. Wish i was back in the 80s, i live in Australia and Oxford street in darlinghurst was amazing. Adam and the ants were the band that made me sit up to this new music at the age of 15
I was there too! DarlingHurst, Stkilda, Fitzroy.... Going to st Vinnie's, re altering clothes the clothes that you bought from there, fabric paint, hair gel.. .So much fun and creativity! Neo Punk was to look amazing without compromise. I talk to punk kids now and all their fashion comes from Amazon. The individual creativity is now manufactured consumerism (which was what the whole movement is against!) Anyway I'm so glad I got to party in the Golden Age of the 80's, 90's and early 00's. Everything became so tame and controlled around 08 but I'm thankful i got to experience the best time in human history!
I still look like that! But in my daily life i wear normal but little weird clothes. But then there is my party life and that involves around my crazy funky look! I wanna bring back the 80's!
What happened in the 80's can never happen again. There can be no such thing as a real underground culture. How long will something stay/ develop underground when you have instant global connection and "likes". something is around the block but it will came in the way of "computer "
I’m so glad I at least caught the end of going out without social media. 1992-2000’s. No one had to give a f about their insta feed. We all just went out for the music and friendship. Honest, drug-addled stuff.
As with the 60s and 70s, so much original and unique artists and bands and fashion! 3 GREAT decades for that, despite or maybe because times were tough for a lot of people. Lack of decent housing meant lots of people were squatting. Can't imagine today's moaning millenials living without hot water!! Or central heating. And many of us didn't have phones at home! Lol.
Amazing stuff and creativity....but I HATED the bitchiness and exclusivity of the time...that whole 'we are too cool for anything...so cool we aren't even cool' thing....you had to be very confident even if you didn't think you were and not all creative people are...
I appreciate what they were doing, but it's so much more polished and 'fashiony' than what was happening simultaneously in NY. I prefer the grittiness of the New York scene in the 80s.
Soul Boys total BS their was the NS Soul Scene for that New Romantics were not into the NS Soul Scene or Music The Gay crowd in the 90s Tried to take over the NS scene to pick up Straight Men You never saw them at real NS Soul venues

Take me back in a time machine and drop me off at The Blitz club in 1980. Ultravox, Visage, Spandau.

Dunno why none of the folks in this video are given credit in the credits :/
I deeply appreciated the upload of this. Thank you for the trip back to my teen years.

Princess Julia was so photogenic.

either of you seen the movie Dogs in Space?
was it accurate/true life?
I've heard it's based on a band called Eels, maybe?
I still look like that! But in my daily life i wear normal but little weird clothes. But then there is my party life and that involves around my crazy funky look! I wanna bring back the 80's!
What a time to live !!proud I got too!
i still say there's lots of elements of punk rock in this club scene but more in a LIQUID SKY sort of way
what's a liquid sky way?
'what he was trying to explain via his image' 💜💜💜💜💜
young people in music scenes do a lotta fashion innovation, wonder why
Love this! - will never happen again as the internet makes everyone accessible to everything!
All artists steal. Dressing up should be for everyone ☺️✨
@@olwenyappa8849 yes they should... And this is why this will never happen again.
What happened in the 80's can never happen again.

something is around the block but it will came in the way of "computer "
Interesting hypothesis
Absolutely! Unfortunately what happened in the Early 80's so can't happen again. A time machine is neeeeded, now is just SHITE!
I have also wondered what effect social media has had in youth subculture.
Fuck social media
I’m so glad I at least caught the end of going out without social media. 1992-2000’s.
No one had to give a f about their insta feed. We all just went out for the music and friendship. Honest, drug-addled stuff.
Wonderful!
please please please the music at 1:23 ??? thx very much
Too small a sample for identification but definitely not mainstream 80s.
it is always in my mind&heart
Boy George and the singer Marilyn were Blitz kids also
Why Only Thursday??? That sucks!!! The club had to be opened several days a week. What was there the rest of the week???
0:49 - Is that Lynne Burns?

Street fashion not seen as serious fashion? That's what the designers ripped off.

@Stephen Anthony Why though? The presumptuousness is staggering. What gave you hoons the right, you imagined, to police people?
I can't believe it's not James st. James speaking
There's significant differences between BLITZ and TABOO though.
No idea Leigh Bowery died so young. Such a loss to the art world and the community.
Early Punks and New romantics really had interesting and very individual looks...
I am not that kind of person.but i like beautyful people...
I appreciate what they were doing, but it's so much more polished and 'fashiony' than what was happening simultaneously in NY. I prefer the grittiness of the New York scene in the 80s.
love your gritty subscriptions

Boy George!!! / George O'donell
Yola Oudhoff O’Dowd

They came from poverty and hardship,to prove you can still dress to kill and wear great clothes.

I like everything about New Romantics but i don't like that there very many gays among the most famous of them. 🤢🤢
A generation of losers
1:00 wasn't about black people dude. Sorry you guys aren't involved in literally everything like u want to be
