The Americans turned Irish Dance into their sick kids' beauty pageants. I also prefer the old dresses, real hair und much less make-up. Nowadays the dancers look like (mini-)drag queens.
i also think its really cool that there was an african american girl doing it back then. Now it is very multicultural but apparently it was farther back too. Its wonderful to see.
Yes I agree I'm also a non-caucasian Irish dancer myself, and I especially love to see videos like this💗People seem to forget that Morgan Bullock is not the first "black" irish dancer...
It's fascinating to see how it's changed so quickly. Even better, this is shortly before Eurovision, where that change took off. The beginning of the end of relative stagnation compared to almost exponential growth.
@RebiTitanic - she is not African American. Her name is Leora Semple-Morris and she is from London - now a TCRG and runs the Barrett-Semple-Morris. She came 2nd one year.
Because they read out the scores judge by judge first, and most people write them down as they announce them, so if she won by a long way it would have been pretty obvious who won.
Absolutely splendid Irish culture at its best. This type of Irish dancing and dress should have been done at the Queens Platinum Jubile instead of the very short matching knickers that the dancers were wearing and the silly ballet leg throws . What was presented to the Queen as Irish culture was disrespectful to many Irish. The dresses were so short their bums were showing. Not a nice respectful presentation of Irish culture.
Not sure who would have the old ladies world trophy, but the one shown here was donated by my father all those years ago. I wonder if it's been replaced by something else and if so, where is it now?
Seven whole years later, lol... my guess would be that the point distribution made the winner obvious, because the points are read out. Grainne Feely also won multiple Worlds, so it might have been fair to assume she'd win again -- though generally the announcers don't make opinion statements like that.
Wish it was still like this. The way they danced was much more elegant.
Yeah, it was way more feminine back then, now it's more of an athletic event?
I love this even better than todays I think the steps were better and the dresses superb Irish culture at its best.
Much more feminine and beautiful compared to today where it feels more like a gymnastic event than a dance?

No 9 was my favourite She had great elevation and her dancing caught my eye. Splendid.
Back when they shook hands. We should start that up again as dancers it is very nice and shows good sportsmanship!

some of the dress are actually really cool
Back when set dances actually had trebles instead of a minute of toe stands and jumps lol

Jean Butler is at 0.34-0.40, 2.54-2.56 (sixth) and at 3.06-3.10 (the tall one).
Oh my goodness, how times have changed
Real hair, Real dresses and Real sportsmanship that's what it used to be about.
I'm glad im not part of that world these days!
@mairead027 This is from Olive Hurley's first video, a documentary of the 25th World Irish Dance Championships. They were held in Glasgow in 1994.

I believe 3rd place is Sorcha McCaul who will later be a leading chorus lady (Deirdre) in Dancing on Dangerous Ground?
Whos 1st place roach stomper?
Sorcha was the principal dancer on Riverdance too
I love this, don't judge me for not knowing but what year was this from??
I think she won a total of 10 World Titles in her dancing career so maybe that could be why?
Traditional Irish dance costumes with celtic designs. Todays dresses some are very questionable to be Irish dance costumes.
Deni when Mothers like me hand embroidered solo and team costumes all through our daughters careers and curled their hair with sponge rollers.
They look more and more like figure skating costumes today.
boy have the times have changed! : )

what's the name of the song playing at the end?

SensuousLettuce I know you posted this 7 years ago but in case your still wondering it’s downfall of Paris
@mairead027 Cara Butler is at 2:05.....
They show the scores for each round before they annouce the winners. She probably won by a large margin.
When announcing the winner why did he say "I'm sure you've already guessed?"
