Based on the way Melon talks about his reviews, I honestly think he enjoyed Lil Boat more than MBDTF. I don't think his scores are meant to be objective ratings of the quality of albums, just how much enjoyment he gets out of them. He fully admits that they're his opinions, so I think he just had more fun listening to yachty than this album.
That and the type of album. The content between albums was different, he reviewed based on how much he enjoyed the content being prevayed, not overall quality of the music comparing each album
It boggles my mind that people dont understand this like obviously objectively mbdtf is a more ambitious and impressive album. Doesnt mean he cant enjoy yachty more :/
Nard Dog if the score isn’t about his enjoyment then he needs to have a video where he explains how a lil pump album could be objectively better and mbdtf. Or if you’d like to you could explain. I know we want to dig deep into his album scores and find serious meaning but this guy rates things out of enjoyment. He’s just good at describing what parts he enjoys and doesnt
I always too Runaway as the media taking what Kanye says the wrong way. The distorted part at the end which included the hook is what the media hears. However the listener hears what he was saying beforehand and what Kanye meant, so are willing to understand. So he's trying to express what he's saying but you're not hearing him or willing to, you just hear distorted noise.
I know DEHH may not see this, but fun fact: Anthony actually put MBDTF at 41/50 on his year end list. So it DEFINITELY grew on him, but he didn't do redux reviews until (I think) Life of Pablo and I'm sure once he saw the memes, he probably didn't wanna kill it so he even decided to join in and stick to an opinion he changed that same year. (or less)
His praise for the most part seems to come from being objective. He didn't love the album, but he recognizes the quality thats there. Thats an important context for the rating, which would make sense if what I said is true.
This had probably been said a million times I think it is important to remember that 1) 6 is a positive review, as anything above five means he enjoyed it 2) fantano rates just on his personal enjoyment 3) the way fantano justified his review score is pretty valid. If an artist makes an entire album about cheese sticks and you don't care at all about cheese sticks, it's probably going to have a highly negative effect on how you enjoy the album overall, no matter how well produced it is, how much you like the flows etc. Or how most other people listening to the album go wild over cheese sticks Always good to see DEHH featured on this channel btw :)
People forget that Melon’s reviews are purely based on his enjoyment-and that 5 is a neutral review. Anything above a Solid 5 is positive. He’s allowed to enjoy a Lil Yachty album more than MBDTF, on purely a personal listening experience, and the rating only reflects that
imo Fantano's MBDTF review is what solidified him as a music critique. The most important thing in a music reviewer is consistency above all else and this review showed us that Fantano doesn't ride hype trains or compromise his reviews. I disagreed with the review, just like I have for many other of his. But music reviewers shouldn't exist to tell you what you should like, consistent genuine music fans like Fantano keep the discussion of music alive and challenge us to have our own thoughts on an album.
Awesome video! I’m a new DEHH subscriber because they’re hilarious, cool, and rational people. I admit I’m guilty of skipping to the end of reviews for the score because I’m either too busy or lazy.
I really enjoyed this DEHH review of Fantano's MBDTF review. When I watched the Needledrop review 8 years ago I definitely fell into the understanding yet confused fan category. Everyone made valid points but Feefo pulling the Feefo halfway through was my favorite part lol. 6/10 for this video.
To be honest, as I came from rock/punk/alternative background, Yeezus was an album that got me into Kanye. My first impression of MBDTF was strong 6, it became at least strong 8 after a while.
@@jacoblumpkin2930 here comes same "personal preference" that probably made Melon give it a 6. For me it is maybe even 9, but 10 is reserved for my favourite albums of all time.
I think there’s one more thing maybe worth noting about the MBDTF review: the majority of its audience are watching it long after its initial release, with the retrospective legacy of the album taken as a given. It’s normal today to deify famous albums like OK Computer or Remain in Light or Marquee Moon and hold them up as obvious mandatory classics. I also think it’s normal for a lot of especially younger fans to project onto that legacy, perhaps even wishing they could experience the moment when that record was released. But most of these albums have the benefit of hindsight - it’s extraordinarily rare for an album to be immediately recognized upon release as something which will still be relevant and influential decades later. Every year Anthony Fantano gets a newer audience of people who are younger and/or only recently familiar with greater popular music culture. Most of them probably look to Fantano as an authority on this kind of culture, and, by extension, would look to him in hopes that he would identify _what that next modern classic is._ But the truth is, in the decade he’s been reviewing music, *he’s only had the opportunity to publish one contemporary review of an album which has since been recognized as a classic.* And he gave that album a 6 out of 10. For people coming in blind nine years after the fact, I can’t entirely fault them for their disappointment.
I'm 100% with Feefo on this one. I mean, at the end of the day the score, however arbitrary it might be, is supposed to represent Fantano's critical thoughts on the album. If people think you're tripping with a score then, as Feefo said, they can hold you accountable for it. I get that many fans probably did not even listen to Anthony's main points and just scrolled down to read the rating, but it still doesn't change one thing: giving an otherwise great album a 6 simply because you're not interested in the artist's personal life is not a fair review imo. Of course, it's just my opinion... Another great point brought up by the DEHH guys is how exactly the rating system works: is an artist rated relative to himself or to his peers? I would think it has to be somewhere in the middle. If artists were rated only relative to themselves, then shitty artists would get 10s simply because they released their best work (which is still shitty). Also, how would you review an artist's first work? Thus, I would reason that Fantano rates artists on a scale relative to themselves and similar artists. This double standard, however, means that great albums may receive low scores simply because they're being subjected to a higher standard. I'm sure Anthony has detailed his scoring system in the past so I'll have to find some of those vids and see what he says about it.
Don’t let this distract you from the fact that Melon gave MBDTF a 6

I always too Runaway as the media taking what Kanye says the wrong way. The distorted part at the end which included the hook is what the media hears. However the listener hears what he was saying beforehand and what Kanye meant, so are willing to understand. So he's trying to express what he's saying but you're not hearing him or willing to, you just hear distorted noise.
FEEFO said "grading on a curve" for yachty lmaooo
Well I'm just happy the needle drop is giving this album the credit it deserves even if Mr Fantano isn't the one saying it lol.
Review Mac Demarco's latest album so I can tell if I like it or if it's a 6.
lowkey it is a light 6 lol
I haven't heard it yet, but I can assure you that it is a strong 5 to light 6
I'd say 8
Fantano would probably give it an 8
I heard it, if its above a 7 i'm calling bs
I know DEHH may not see this, but fun fact: Anthony actually put MBDTF at 41/50 on his year end list. So it DEFINITELY grew on him, but he didn't do redux reviews until (I think) Life of Pablo and I'm sure once he saw the memes, he probably didn't wanna kill it so he even decided to join in and stick to an opinion he changed that same year. (or less)
Well ask yourself this, has he ever put an album that was a 6/10 in his Top 50?
Man's a 🐐 for giving die lit 7/10 🗿 which should've been 8.5
urelio fax
He did a video about a bunch of albums he changed his opinion on, and in that video he said Die Lit grew on him more so its more like an 8 to him now
Are you pitchfork?
urelio He said in his Top Albums video that it's more of an 8 now
His praise for the most part seems to come from being objective. He didn't love the album, but he recognizes the quality thats there. Thats an important context for the rating, which would make sense if what I said is true.
Hopefully Feefo never finds Scaruff's ratings
he gave it like one of the highest ratings across the hip-hop genre to be fair.
Next: "Hi everyone Anthony Fantano here and it's time for a review of the review of my review of MBDTF"
I'm liking these intervention videos
Glad to see you put an amazing channel on
Feefo killed this shit haha
Thank you for uploading this Anthony!
respect for always showing love to dehh all these years real recognize real
We're getting warmer to the redux review.
11:31 watched the review all the way through, but that 6/10 is unforgivable no matter how fair the review was in this case
"That review was a light 4"-Feefo 😂😂😂
This had probably been said a million times I think it is important to remember that 1) 6 is a positive review, as anything above five means he enjoyed it 2) fantano rates just on his personal enjoyment 3) the way fantano justified his review score is pretty valid. If an artist makes an entire album about cheese sticks and you don't care at all about cheese sticks, it's probably going to have a highly negative effect on how you enjoy the album overall, no matter how well produced it is, how much you like the flows etc. Or how most other people listening to the album go wild over cheese sticks
Always good to see DEHH featured on this channel btw :)
People forget that Melon’s reviews are purely based on his enjoyment-and that 5 is a neutral review. Anything above a Solid 5 is positive. He’s allowed to enjoy a Lil Yachty album more than MBDTF, on purely a personal listening experience, and the rating only reflects that
they all should've worn flannels(missed opportunity)
Bruh... Your profile pic and name... Let that man live.
THIS is the greatest crossover in cinematic history🙏🏽
The guy in the white tee was the only one spitting FAXXX
Dead end hip hop is one of the best music channels on UA-cam
Smart putting out these guest videos while on tour, managing your time well and giving them reach.
Y'all forgot he said devil in a new dress was 'not his best work'
imo Fantano's MBDTF review is what solidified him as a music critique.
Bruh a 6 tho? The review doesn't sound like a 6. The critic of the antics brought down the review way too much.
Yes a new video on the MBDTF channel!
Every review I can see where Fantano is coming from but the MBDTF review was so off.
Pasicho
Like what everyone says:
“Opinions are like assholes everyone has em”
House of Balloons review is as bad as this one
Awesome video! I’m a new DEHH subscriber because they’re hilarious, cool, and rational people. I admit I’m guilty of skipping to the end of reviews for the score because I’m either too busy or lazy.
MBDTF died for this week
Yall need to do this again but with his "Blank Face" review.
MBDTF Redux review but he gives it a strong 6 to a light 7
He gave it a strong 5 in the redux lmaoo
I really enjoyed this DEHH review of Fantano's MBDTF review. When I watched the Needledrop review 8 years ago I definitely fell into the understanding yet confused fan category. Everyone made valid points but Feefo pulling the Feefo halfway through was my favorite part lol. 6/10 for this video.
I definitely agree with Feefo and Modest Media
Next can we talk about how Melon gave Days before Rodeo a 3?
mid
Days Before Rodeo is easily a 9 or 10. If you REALLY picky then an 8
@@StormVegitto He said DAYS BEFORE Rodeo. RODEO is a 10.
vhsultra my bad I meant Days before Rodeo
Feefo representing the People! 🙌🙌🙌
Theneedledrop x DeadEndHiphop will always be my favorite music reviewers. Been watching them since 2012 lol
To be honest, as I came from rock/punk/alternative background, Yeezus was an album that got me into Kanye. My first impression of MBDTF was strong 6, it became at least strong 8 after a while.
Shit is a 10
@@jacoblumpkin2930 here comes same "personal preference" that probably made Melon give it a 6. For me it is maybe even 9, but 10 is reserved for my favourite albums of all time.
I love how Feefo just randomly shows up.
You know feefo gettin old walking in with his hand on his chest
Most of them probably look to Fantano as an authority on this kind of culture, and, by extension, would look to him in hopes that he would identify _what that next modern classic is._
But the truth is, in the decade he’s been reviewing music, *he’s only had the opportunity to publish one contemporary review of an album which has since been recognized as a classic.* And he gave that album a 6 out of 10. For people coming in blind nine years after the fact, I can’t entirely fault them for their disappointment.
Fantano was being petty! Lol
Are these guest videos heading to a new review of MBDTF?
This is great convo guys. A lot of great points and it really is just the ppl
Mbtdf most def a 10 . Interludes, Features, Content, Kanye . Ya know
I'm 100% with Feefo on this one.
