That was mega great video :D, i still laugh. No, no laugh for Fairmont (actually he did it pretty fine), i feel good mind of you three (Eric, Brian, Fairmont) and It helped me today. I need saw it. Thanks Eric and thanks also Brian and Fairmont. Sorry for my eng.
how much money are you going to throw at it ? I reccomend just going megasquirt, Injectors, coils, headgasket and do the valve's a little do-over, put it back together, turbo charging in the end ;) cause, if a 1.2 Litre opel engine can do 150 whp, this should definately be good at 250 whp all day long :) electronic ignition and injection gives a ton of power :)
My friend bought a 78 Fairmont coupe for 500 bucks with a badass 302,B&M Megashifter and he put a 9 inch in the back...it would do 12's all day...it got a lifter tick so he got a Crane Cams kit for the top half...when we tore the intake off...we noticed he had a real 302 Boss from 1969 in it...the hilljack that sold him the car had no idea
It's so funny to come back here three and a half years later, after watching this the day it went live. So glad to see it is finally running under its new setup
Fantastic, I love trips to the drag strip, it's a ton of fun and one of the few places you can see what your car can do safely. I'm not a particularly competitive guy so I always wait for open test and tune days.
Eric, great message About 15 years ago I had a friend that drove a Fairmont like yours (4 door). He drove it (stock) rather hard. One day the back seat cushion caught on fire due to the cat not having the heat shield and being clogged and therefore getting really hot. Just something to check. B-) Have fun
You would be surprised on bracket racing. I saw a guy once bring a 3-wheeler ATV to the track. It turned something like 36 seconds. He made it to the final few rounds. It psyched out many who red lighted having to wait over 20 seconds to start or they went under their posted time having to catch up with the ATV that was already 80% down the track. ;) The best race was an old barricuda and a VW beetle. At the start, you could hear the bug just ticking, nice V8 purr from the 'cuda. Lights went green, all you could hear from the 'cuda was it sucking air and not going anywhere fast. The bug roared to life, front wheels came up and it basically passed the 'cuda before they left the tree. My Fox-body Mustang is a lead sled at 2 tons. I was surprised to see the fearmont is just 2600lbs. I looked up the original 1/2 mile times are 20.6 at 68mph. Not bad for that tired 6-cyl ;)
Great video. You have my interest really peaked. I have a 1975 Ford Elite that's a bit rusty but all stock. 351 Windsor in it. I need to find me a drag strip and see if it blows up.
There is a 1/2 second between yellow lights it is usually best to not wait for the green light but leave when the last yellow light goes off, for the best reaction time.
The Fear-Mont II. Love it! I'm predicting 1/4-mile times in the mid 12s when you're done swapping in a 5.0 from a Fox-body Mustang GT. Go for the latest model-year you can get your hands on -- I'd say a '92 with an AOD tranny. Throw some mods (cam, intake, headers, cylinder-heads, etc.) on that engine and you'll be pumping out 350+ hp easy, without a turbo or supercharger. Put a high-stall torque-converter, a shift-kit, and an 4R70W gear-set in that AOD and it'll be consistent as hell with a great acceleration off the line. Do something about that light-duty 6.75" rear-end you've got, too -- needs to be a 3.70 9" posi rear-end like what I've got in my '68 Galaxie. Best damn rear-end ever made, in my opinion. And the more you race, the better your reaction time's gonna be -- it's all about matting the pedal *just before* the light turns green -- somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 of a second before the green-light illuminates, depending on how responsive your throttle is. Takes a lot of practice to get it right, but it's totally possible to have a consistent reaction time at or below 0.1 seconds. Gonna be all kinds of fun when it's complete! Can't wait!
Loved the video. My suggestion: How about starting with some basic tunning before going to actually replacing parts with higher performance ones? Like some ignition timing, air/fuel mixture, etc.? That way we could see how much a stock engine can give before actually modify it.
Thanks Eric! I look forward to seeing some HP bolted on to that straight 6! Wait... you are gonna keep the straight 6 right??? That's what I would anyway.
I have great faith that with more track time and some hard work on the Fairmont you could easily break the 19 sec mark. At what point do they require a roll cage?
Depends on the track every Track rules are different. Possibly,Low 11's because eventually the driver will break into the 10's or 9's. I know someone with an ALL motor( fully built with forged internal bottom &top) stock appearing Mitsubishi eclipse with a non turbo chrysler DOHC 420a engine with Manual transmission. Who broke into the 10 second barrier. Which the owner has the highest horse power for an All motor, plus he still holds the reord to this day. Search, Bulletdsm on youtube for his videos.
I used to run at Edgewater in the 90s in a $600 '80 Pinto with a 351 Windsor. It had a open diff and I never got good 60 foot times, but it was lottsa loud and mega fun. It ran 14.44 at 100 mph.
Ok first of all, this build is getting exciting! Secondly, I also have a shirt that says "Still plays with cars" and I have a skeleton hanging from my rear view mirror. The small detail I lack is the knowledge of being a tech/mech!
Cool you got through the tech. Here if you're gonna be doing under 110 at the finish they're a bit more relaxed about helmets and stuff. And if your car can't even do 110 they're even more relaxed about everything. "It's consistent, it's right in the 20s..."
My last time at Edgewater I drove the tow vehicle. I towed a 92 Camaro with a 327 and accompanied by a S-10 Blazer with a 350. They made their runs and I got bored. Unhooked the trailer from my truck (2007 Dodge Ram 1500 4x2 Hemi), and ran faster. Thought it was funny. Of course they did not know how to build a car. I later tore apart both of their engines. The Blazer's number 5 and 7 cam lobes were flat. The Camaro had a blown head gasket. You can't just drop an unknown motor in a car. Happens so much around Cincy.
nice to see you got it to the strip--but now that "drag racing bug" is with you and you are sunk!! ha ha.. It will be great to see the upgrades happen and the ET's go down...
Only got to 65mph on the 1/4 lol My truck does 60 on the 1/8. It is really fun to go to those test-n-tunes me and my friends go a lot, it'll be interesting how much you improve it with your mods.
How it sounds, great... with a 3 liter inline 6, you are the king here in Europe. Bigger cars have like > 2 liter displacement. Our engines with 85 hp all sound like lawnmowers. :(
It is fun. It's legal. But be aware that your insurance is not "on your side" if something happens. In fact, you won't be in "good hands" at all. But if you can afford to fix it yourself, it's a blast. I see you found some oil outside the engine. I joined that club with my 94 Mustang a week ago. Or should I say, that smoke out the back of the car was not tire smoke. Now it's time for you to put a push rod 5.0 in the Fairmont and watch the ETs go down!
Of course the 5.0 will also mean better brakes, better suspension, and a better transmission. But that's just all part of it. I hope you'll do most of this stuff with used parts that you rebuild. It will be a lot of fun to watch.
91 mph, top speed. Four of us drove from DC to NO for Mardi Gras in a very brown rented 4 door Fairmont. In Alabama, the highway was so empty we floored it for hours. 91 mph. Eventually, we caught up to some sorority girls in a Duster and they flashed their boobs then pulled away about 1 mph faster than the Fairmont could go. We were jettisoning weight to make it go faster (saw that in a war movie), when an Alabama State Trooper blew by us. We thought we were dead, but he kept going to the vanishing point followed, very, very slowly, by the sorority girls.
A 460 running about 500 hp, a built C6 and a 9 inch, with black steel wheels and no changes to the body. That thing would be a sleeper! Only thing that would make it better would be if it were four doors!
LoudProudNPunk1 Many cars in the 80s and even some in the 90s didn't feature power steering. I've been fairly lucky though as all my cars have had it. One of my cars was built in the 80s and has navigation.
I knew you lived in southwestern Ohio Eric! Mainly from your first Fairmont video... I'm guessing your shop is located in the Monroe/Lebanon area, from the looks of the scenery in that video.
I'd love to take my falcon to one of those track days.. Only when its quiet though, haha I'd be nervous with it being the first time i'd of done it. Be nice to see what my ex police pursuit car could do. Its got 270BHP 6 cylinder motor
How is the project? I just bought a 1981 2 door post Fairmont. Anxiously waiting for your next video. I will keep the 3.3 il6. Just do something to help it breathe better. All suggestions welcome. Great videos.
Gizmo Thewytchdokr just watched the vid with brian the cameraman and you doing a street run after the carb tweak. it's come a long way since this vid. hope turning that key was as good as i said it would be for that first drive and fire-up ;-) congrats on the build finish! you realize the tweaking can turn into boatwrights disease, don't you? ;-) =dok=
Eric, I was wondering if you could explain for the audience how the 7 deg is related to 360 deg for a full rotation, and 4 or 6 cyl.engine, 4 over-head cams/cylinder etc. Thanks. Joseph P. May 21,2014
Thats cool man, you must live really close to me because I go to edgewater all the time. I've been a fan of yours for a while now and maybe I'll run into you out there or we can get together through here and hang out sometime.
hey eric liked your drag racing comment to keep the city streets safe. But in your case you can floor it on the streets and you wont have to worry about the cops on the highway cause your car barely breaks speed limits throughout America. Just joking~ cant wait to see what happens to this car from here.
In the 80's when these cars were still common an 18 sec run was considered good while a 19 or 20 was considered slow but "acceptable." The Ford Granadas, AMC Eagles, Chevy Malibus and Novas were not any quicker. When a 79 Corvette L48 (base) is running 9.6 to 60 and a 6.6 (403) Trans Am is at 11 seconds you get some perspective.
Next step is to dump a stock 302 in it, and start the comparison. pretty much doing the same with my '79 ford F100. Slowly upgrading, and recording my results.
It hauls ass xD I like the Fearmont. You should use that somewhere down the line. Still can't get around that it has 85 hp and 3.3L engine. :D That's pretty cool actually, in a way. What are the torque numbers you reckon?
I have a fairmont myself a 78 version with EP package. These engines put out 85hp and 154lb of torque. These cars are slow at the top end but it's torque makes up for it. I've ended up removing the cat and added a flowmaster with K&N airfilter. It somewhat helped with power. My brothers 2014 fusion 2.0 Ecoboost is still way way faster :3
To follow up on my original post, are you running an automatic or stick, I thought you were going to use the 5-manual shift, but in your drag racing videos, I did not see you shift. That was all the fun in drag racing like I used to do in the 1960's.Vinnie in Cincinnati
Identical Numbers, It would be GREAT for Bracket Racing!! Out of curiosity though, why did you choose to drag race it for a base line, as opposed to a dyno test for a base line?
Surprise! You get a bonus video this week. The Fairmont Goes To The Drag Strip (Baseline Run) -EricTheCarGuy
That was mega great video :D, i still laugh. No, no laugh for Fairmont (actually he did it pretty fine), i feel good mind of you three (Eric, Brian, Fairmont) and It helped me today. I need saw it.

Do your magic to that car Eric you can turn that car into a beast
Your getting very sleepy...

Eric besides Oliver being consistent at the track, he's also consistent at making you smile! That's awesome bud!
That was just good fun to watch. Looking forward to future instalments.
Right On! Hopefully we'll see more of it at the track!
1:05 seeing you pull up and that burnout comment you made I could not stop laughing 😂 👍🏼
HE SHOULD'VE attempted a burnout, just for us fans
I'm so messed up on timeline. I was trying to click on his new video where the car can do a burnout, lol.
Eric, great message
About 15 years ago I had a friend that drove a Fairmont like yours (4 door). He drove it (stock) rather hard. One day the back seat cushion caught on fire due to the cat not having the heat shield and being clogged and therefore getting really hot. Just something to check. B-)

1/4 mile is what he did
oops, that should have been 1/4 mile times.
Good fun. Circle, drag, 8 it all makes me smile.
Now to the board and get some upgrades in it.You can dooo it. That was cool Eric. ..
The Fairmont project is going to be awesome, I'm so excited to see how it turns out!
would be good pairing with my bus,
Eric that thing needs a loud exhaust, roll cage, and giant drag wheels and then your ready to go ricen...
19-20 secs. Almost as fast as the TRD Ford Laser!
Great video. You have my interest really peaked. I have a 1975 Ford Elite that's a bit rusty but all stock. 351 Windsor in it. I need to find me a drag strip and see if it blows up.
Can wait to see what you drop in it Eric, best of luck!
There is a 1/2 second between yellow lights it is usually best to not wait for the green light but leave when the last yellow light goes off, for the best reaction time.
i love these ford/merc fairmont/zephyrs...
one of the best sleepers of the era.
And a few years later, Eric goes and Frankensteins a 500HP engine into this granny car.
Just me from the future here.
Pretty cool to see, I grew up around that area and went to that track a few times
Can't wait to see the Fairmont tuned up! -- I suggest you name it "UnfairMount".
The Fear-Mont II. Love it!

You sort of look like Heisenberg with those glasses and beard. Only thing missing is the hat ;)
I thought this at a glance.
I was thinking he got skiny again, but it turns out I found his baseline track run instead of his new video, lol.
Thanks Eric! I look forward to seeing some HP bolted on to that straight 6! Wait... you are gonna keep the straight 6 right??? That's what I would anyway.

Well done man. She ran good.
Damn EricTheCarGuy... I Didn't realize you were that close to me. I'm only a few hours from Cincinnati.
Fun is all you need to have. it could be slow but long as you had fun.
Its so sweet it almost seems a shame to take it apart. on the otherhand now the project is nearly done its going to be amazing.
Summit racing in Norwalk is where I'm gonna be going this summer to test my valiant out haha
Kool video funny and laid back driving. Surprised when you said its a 6 cylinder with around 85ish horse power.
Poor old Fairmont. :)
But now we may have a HG video to look forward to.
all about consistency
Been waiting a while for this video, glad to finally see it haha
LOL you were gaining on the Mustang!
Awesome vid. Drive it like ya' stole it. FORD= First On Race Day! YiiiHaaa!
Only got to 65mph on the 1/4 lol My truck does 60 on the 1/8. It is really fun to go to those test-n-tunes me and my friends go a lot, it'll be interesting how much you improve it with your mods.

David Roddick You're pretty darn close to what I have planned. Thanks for the input.
EricTheCarGuy Damn I cant wait for the videos! I learn alot from you Eric.
assurance still wont be on your side if you crash while you was doing 70 on a 50 zone or if you crash will wide open on the trottle
thats cool, I took my 91 honda station wagon to the track it it was pretty consistent at 17 seconds and 79 miles an hour.
91 mph, top speed.

Great Vid Eric! Would still love to see you Rebuild that good old inline 6. Better Cam, intake manifold and exhaust. a 4 BBL Carb or maybe 3 singles
I think it's really cool that a car this old has power steering.
And friend of mine has a '66 Plymouth Fury wagon, and it has power steering. Power steering has been around for quite a while now.
LoudProudNPunk1
Many cars in the 80s and even some in the 90s didn't feature power steering. I've been fairly lucky though as all my cars have had it. One of my cars was built in the 80s and has navigation.
Kranbone
Hard to believe that there was once a time when power brakes and power steering were considered options.
SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL DRAGSTRIPS!!!
It's hard to believe that car was the 'new' car on the block. And I was even there (grin).
I knew you lived in southwestern Ohio Eric! Mainly from your first Fairmont video... I'm guessing your shop is located in the Monroe/Lebanon area, from the looks of the scenery in that video.
consistency is only really impresive with aftermarket parts and tunes if you ask me. the more the car is being pushed
Wow a porsche 944 on a dragstrip haha
Love those cars keep up with the videos
I'd love to take my falcon to one of those track days.. Only when its quiet though, haha I'd be nervous with it being the first time i'd of done it. Be nice to see what my ex police pursuit car could do. Its got 270BHP 6 cylinder motor
How is the project? I just bought a 1981 2 door post Fairmont. Anxiously waiting for your next video. I will keep the 3.3 il6. Just do something to help it breathe better. All suggestions welcome.
Great videos.
Gizmo Thewytchdokr
just watched the vid with brian the cameraman and you doing a street run after the carb tweak. it's come a long way since this vid. hope turning that key was as good as i said it would be for that first drive and fire-up ;-) congrats on the build finish! you realize the tweaking can turn into boatwrights disease, don't you? ;-)
=dok=
Eric, I was wondering if you could explain for the audience how the 7 deg is related to 360 deg for a full rotation, and 4 or 6 cyl.engine, 4 over-head cams/cylinder etc. Thanks. Joseph P. May 21,2014
Awesome Eric! Now you have your baseline. I guess they don't require helmets at that track?
I didnt realize you were so close... Im about an hour and a half from Edgewater
20 seconds is faster that I thought it would run....
3:45 Wow look at Oliver walking that other car down!
Would the Ford 4.9 300 inline 6 fit in there? That would be a neat swap. Full engine and fuel injection from a 95 F150 with the inline 6.
Dude you rock!!!!
That's a Porsche 944 in front of / next to you!! I own a red one...awesome!
sweet
so the base line is set. I hope to see some modifications to better the time now.
im going to cecil county drag way this wednesday to see what my supra can do :D
My Supra is NOT a drag racing car.
You should be able to put a Ford Barra 4.0 6 into that without much issues...
Thats cool man, you must live really close to me because I go to edgewater all the time. I've been a fan of yours for a while now and maybe I'll run into you out there or we can get together through here and hang out sometime.

I like that - “the Fearmont”.
I love this car
Nice runs,!!
How do you, or do you get on the highway when you are cruising around in the fairmont without getting mowed down when you merge in?
In the 80's when these cars were still common an 18 sec run was considered good while a 19 or 20 was considered slow but "acceptable." The Ford Granadas, AMC Eagles, Chevy Malibus and Novas were not any quicker. When a 79 Corvette L48 (base) is running 9.6 to 60 and a 6.6 (403) Trans Am is at 11 seconds you get some perspective.
Nice vid! Now is time to throw some money to turn that beast into the Fearmont II
Just paint the car to look like a turtle ,and keep on racing. LOL
LOL Good idea :)
That's a Porsche 944 in front of you!
Awesome!
If not for the extremely strict road laws, the Germans would be really lucky for this sort of thing. They got the Green Hell.
Why back in the past engine had huge Capacity/HP ratio? What's the benefit to do (in this case) a 3.3l with only 85 hp?
What does it run now Eric that's the question???
I still understand why consistency is a good thing in races. Whatever. Cool video.
sweetness!!
I was surprised you did not have to wear a helmet..
looking good :)
To follow up on my original post, are you running an automatic or stick, I thought you were going to use the 5-manual shift, but in your drag racing videos, I did not see you shift. That was all the fun in drag racing like I used to do in the 1960's.Vinnie in Cincinnati
vin x at this point it had an automatic transmission. When it's complete it will have a manual transmission.
its a running driving turbo charged V8 with 5 speed. Check out the latest vids.
The new quarter mile with the new stuff should be 12's @ much faster. lol
Screamin'! I had no idea you were in Ohio. Edgewater is pretty nice.
Identical Numbers, It would be GREAT for Bracket Racing!! Out of curiosity though, why did you choose to drag race it for a base line, as opposed to a dyno test for a base line?
I still might do a dyno.
nice video.
