Save the Chickadees with Winter Feeding

Chickadees are year-round residents of Colorado. Winter survival is highly dependent on the availability of supplemental food. You can save the chickadees by providing them food this winter.

How do you keep the squirrels from eating all the food?

That's a great question. The wide top of the feeder near ground level discourages squirrels. They still pick up the scraps jays throw on the ground. The classic tube feeder is vulnerable to squirrels, but they can't reach the balcony railing where I hung the new feeder.
I also have an occasional deer empty my feeder.
I'm willing to lose some feed to the pests in order to attract birds.

@@FrontRangeGardener Great. We have tons of squirrels so I don't have feeders. I did discover when I dead-headed my Salvia this summer that after I cleaned up my mess a lot of seed was left on the sidewalk. The sparrows flocked to it. I will leave the spent bloom stalks from now on.
