This whole performance is like a cup of hot chocolate with just the right amount of cayenne in it.
This is the type of showmanship you can always expect to witness from KEXP! Where do you find these great artists? She got guts, not everyone can pull this style off. They rocked this!! That opener had even my wife, who is not into this type of music, say, 'who the hell is that?' That is a compliment coming from her.
That scattin made Ella the great come to mind.😀
She scats on Ella's level. I got more of a next gen Abbey Lincoln vibe overall
She is so bright and uplifting, yet her voice and diction make me want to cry. Thank you AGAIN, KEXP!!! Always bringing the talent💙

I know this song I'm about to mention isn't her.. genre? But with her voice? I know Id ADORE hearing her cover Roberta Flacks "first time ever i saw your face". ( my mom's favorite singer and i still have that record with Roberta playing at the piano in my vinyl collection. The album is outlined in all yellow. Forget title rn.❣️)

I just met her aunt Stephanie while I’m in the hospital and she told about this young lady. I am forever grateful. Tremendous gift to us in her music. Awesome.
I am taking a music course in college and just wrote a paper on Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald and I was looking for a comparison in today Jazz for a Ella and the first song I played of Jazzmeia I heard that scat in TIGHT… I was BLOWN away! I had to put her in my paper. New Fan Here!!!

I remember finding her music during a search for jazz musicians for an art opening in 2011. I'm sure it was craigslist. It did not end up lining up but her stuff was fantastic and it is so good to see how well she is doing.

I found her through my local jazz station. WCLK. I just knew that was a stage name. Great interview.
She frequently displays brilliance in some demanding material, and yet she has this natural vocal expression and relaxed and playful style. What is that? Raw talent? Rock solid confidence in ability? And BTW, is that her birthname? Jazzmeia? I guess she's been brought up in this and to be this, but it doesn't come across as forced. Remarkable and a privilege to experience. PS: Band's great too.

A sort of concentration without effort - from the outside at least - is what comes with perseverance, I would say; it's maybe most clear when seeing great pianists play and can be liken to meditation, I guess - to look at something for a long time without staring at it…
@@RayasNegroOvejas You're right. Also I did some reading and discovered that this perceived effortless, unconcerned, relaxed style is well known a jazz ideal. She's simply a very well studied and rehearsed jazz pro is what it is. I even read about ear, and apparently, that can be acquired too, contrary to my belief. You don't have to be born with this gift to get amazing at it. I just thought it was interesting.
