- Trek Untold sat down with Brian Volk-Weiss during NYCC 2024 to discuss the newly announced Star Trek figures from his company, Nacelle Toys. Brian, a lifelong Trek fan and collector, is choosing an unusual route to make his highly articulated collectibles, with the intent to please the hardcore fans more than putting these out in big box stores where they would fester and rot like previous attempts by other companies.
Brian breaks down who will be part of his first wave and details what accessories they include (revealing some secrets he hasn't discussed elsewhere), his strategy and plans for longevity, the story behind how he got the license and what he will do differently from others, and much more in this deep dive into a toy line that has the potential to make Trek fans extremely happy.

Gotta love the boldness of this plan. I so hope it pans out. But like the man says, at least we'll have these eight original figures, if nothing else.
I’m so excited for Weyoun!!
I’m sure we will get the standard hero characters eventually. At this scale and with the detail we have seen in their prototypes, they will sell like crazy. I’m sure Nacelle understands this and will give the fans what they want if they want to be successful and make the most money.
Dr. Carol Marcus AND Captain Sinclair? Bless you dude!
So, I love this. I want a large amount of characters. Valkris is my favorite from this initial list. However, as an action figure collector, I am going to want the big main characters sprinkled in there as well. I want a uniform line that includes an original series Kirk or a TNG Worf, for example.
Here’s the problem with his plan, fans will hold out until they get main characters, more than they want obscure characters immediately. Just ask Super7 how well holding out on releasing the main Simpsons family did for the Ultimates figures.
Imagine they make Jem'Hadar or Remans soldiers. Brian Volk-Weiss could also do deluxe packs where they have different head and hands loaded with weapons so we can army build! WoW! There are several lines I have interest in (Marvel Legends, Star Wars Black) I could drop those lines in total for a Star Trek Universe line with great articulation, sculpts in 6in scale!
The figures look awesome. I'll definitely be buying Archer, Preston, Garrett, and Weyoun.
I think the sweet spot is doing popular characters in costumes that don't usually get toys. Like Kirk in his Star Trek V Captain's jacket or Worf as he appeared in TNG Season 2.
I think there's got to be a balance. You have to have those new characters. But you gotta balance it out with the classic characters that have been done a 100 times over, too. The SW Vintage Collection did that well. People want coherent collections: if their figures and cardboxes don't match Playmates' they gotta have the classics, too, so people can bulit a NEW but also complete collection.
I'm excited for the star trek line, but the only problem with his logic to me is that when you start a new line at a new company, really no one has been made before. Playmates didnt say , we don't need to make Kirk 'cause Mego made him already.
Need a Data figure with floatation mode 🖖😄
7 inch scale means that casual fans can’t even do a Star Trek vs Black Series Star Wars because the scales would be off. I honestly can’t figure out why he would jump right out of the gate into an uphill sales battle
Playmates was successful because they started with the mains, got a foundation, and built on that with the more obscure. I'll grant you that lines have failed since then, but how is a Jellico or a Garrett in a new style in a dead line better than a Kirk or Spock in a dead line? At least the latter will have wider appeal and sell better. I didn't understand this mentality until he mentioned talking with Brian Flynn of Super7. They took a Simpsons line, ignored standard figures of the main family for deep cuts, and saw the line go belly up a handful of waves in. Why follow them off a cliff with nothing but deep cuts? Mix in the popular characters with the obscure for a nice balance or suffer the same fate. You'll never get past Tuvix at this rate lol
Weyoun!!!
Still waiting for Voyager and Prodigy characters, but I guess that will never happen.
He’s delusional if he thinks this will sell without hero characters
