Sounds like this was Autotopia at Disneyland's Tomorrowland. There are 2 tracks that run side by side, and you got a single pedal to give it gas, or let go to stop. Pretty nice ride overall, glad they enjoyed it!
BONUS FACT: the disneyland autopia is bigger then world's and is very shaded because it's forested.
