This video shows you what you can do to fix your Fisher & Paykel icon cpap that is dead after unplugging and travel. Only need a Torque T20 bit and hair dryer
Whoa! Justin my Brother, thank you very much. Exact unit and problem when we went on vacation. Went a miserable 2 + weeks without my 2017 F&P Icon CPAP. Found your video and this repair worked perfectly. Can't thank you enough buddy.
I had the very same problem after traveling overseas. I almost scrapped the machine! A friend suggested a UA-cam search and viola! This video popped up first and proved to be the fix for me as well! Incredible! Thanks a bunch for taking the time to post! Big big help!
Omg you are a lifesaver!! I went to a cottage for a weekend and my machine died! I assumed I needed a new one. But I’ve moved to a different province and hard to get a new one. Came across the video, I don’t own a hairdryer I know I’m weird lol but I have a fireplace with a fan on it, put it in front of that for less than 10 minutes and voila the screen turned on!! Thank you sooo much you just saved me money and now I can get back to sleeping good again!!
It worked! I was just about to quit and the face started flickering on. A minute more and it was good to go! Thank you so much I purchased mine and don’t have another $1500 for a new one after the warranty expired.
Man, u just saved me a restless weekend followed by at least a week of sleep on the doze train. I literally panicked when that darn machine wouldn't turn on at 2am on Saturday night. I searched for this issue and u popped with this video. I didn't think it was going to be that easy but I am solo glad I tried it. Worked like a charm. Never will be able to thank you enough for putting ur fix on you tube for others to be able to find and try resulting in a good night's sleep rather than a nightmare that would be unending until it was replaced. THANK YOU!
This is exactly why I put this out there. I know how much of a pain it is to not have your cpap. It’s unbearable for me and I was so miserable until I fixed it. So glad to help
Thank you a thousand times!!! This worked perfectly in less than 10 sec my machine turned on....woooossh! The bottom part was hard to take off after the screws came out but I pryed the sides with a butter knife all around the edges before it came off... Thought I had to dish out $400 bucks I don't have...😟...thanks again👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you, thank you a thousand times!! I hope you get many many great blessings. It has been a week going on two weeks. Didn’t know what to do!! Waiting for them to call me back about this issue was like pulling teeth!! Glad I came across your video, great video!!! 😊🤩👍🏽
Thank You...heating it did work for me. Rather than taking it apart I placed the unit on top of a heating pad set on high. Took 15 - 20 minutes. From now on I'll pack a heating pad....thanks again.
Dude, I’m on vacation far from home. I tried your method and it worked. I’ve been in a few hotels and I thought it was fried! Nope working great! Thank you for showing us the video. You saved my vacation!!!
I had very low expectations about this quick fix... But after 5 minutes on low setting it was not working so I put the hair dryer on high and 1 minute later the thing came back to life!!!!!!!!!! You are the best! Thank you!
I did something a bit different (below) but Thank you for this post because it worked and I really didn't want to go through the hassel with compliance and insurance claims. Honestly I had not used it for over a year and coming off covid I thought it could help get a full breath for a change and it did, I feel great. I didn't have the tool so I took the unit and plugged it in, no top, tank, or hose. Laid on the side with the bottom toward a small ceramic heater in my bathroom. It was about 8 in away and I felt it for a while to ensure the bottom didn't get too hot but it was hot to the touch. After about 15 min it turned on. I used it and unplugged for 24 hrs and it stopped working. Went through process again and left it plugged in. So far it is still good. I have had for 10 years now so I am eligible for a new machine. I guess 10 years is a long time for a machine that is meant to run everyday.
OK....Sir. I don't know how you figured this out and I can only guess at the logic here - heat expands circuit board forming connection? But I was the biggest cynic watching this vid. I thought maybe you're travelling to a rain dense country. Surely to God...if it does work it's only under certain circumstances - humidity, water, steam etc. made its way into the unit and hence the dryer fix. NOPE. It was a dry day here and dry house. An electrical shortage triggered my unit into deadsville. Chuckling to myself I'm holding the unit as suggested, thinking this is nuts or this guy is probably laughing at all of us believing anything on the internet. Then I saw a light come on and sure enough - abracapresto! It's working! Unbelievable. And lastly, THANKS for posting this. You've saved me from taking years off my life at an attempted sleep without what I call my hyperbaric chamber. Liked & Favorited.
I thought I was dead in the water. I called the company and NO support is offered. They indicated that it is, in essence, a disposable item. Wonderful, which means buying a new one at about $1000.00. This worked for me and I am pleased. Nice work!
Justin - I can't thank you enough for this video. It worked on my 2015 F&P Icon, and seriously, may have saved my life! One note - I followed your directions explicitly, but after about 15 minutes with the hair dryer on low and about to give up hope, I switched it to high, and it almost immediately powered up. Some hair dryers might not provide enough heat on low, so if no luck, its worth a shot on high! Or it may have been a coincidence, but so very grateful to have it back!
Thanks for this! Opening the unit the first time (after 5 years of use) was tricky as it was stuck hard. You just showing where the bottom separated was a big help, but yeah, 30 seconds on high and Presto!
You are such an amazing individual. Save me a couple of times now. Specially the new machines are in months of back order. Thank you for this video. Much appreciated.
It was dead as a doornail. Thank you thank you thank you! I couldn't believe it when it came back to life using a hair dryer. You are a genius! I'm saved so much hassle with no sleep, repair, insurance, yaddi yaddi. It's 1am. I got to get to sleep. NOW! It took 10 minutes. You da MAN! THANKS SO MUCH!
Thank goodness for youtube and you! I dug out my broken (or so I thought) cpap after about 6 years in storage. Stopped using it because I thought it was broken and I was controlling my weight better through diet and exercise. Achy joints are forcing me to limit my exercise now, and I've started to gain weight again. Apnea is now back, and I had to figure out if I could get the cpap working again. Came across your video and tried reviving it with the blowdryer on low or medium like you said, but it didn't work. Then I started reading the comments. One commenter said something about heating up the solder, so I tried again. This time with the blowdryer on high. After about a minute, the old cpap came back to life. Hope this helps me get some decent sleep. I've been struggling for the last few days. Thanks for sharing your fix!
Thank you Mr B. I, like you, can not sleep very well at all with out mine. Maybe we, as a group of thankful CPAP addicts can figure out why our machines do this? Mine sits on the night stand right under my window, which I tend to open at night now that it is cooling down. I have never used the water tank. I never unplug it. This is the first time it has malfunctioned, I am so glad that I found your video. Thanks again:)
I don't know how you figured this out. I was skeptical like so many others, but it WORKED! Thank you so much! The only thing I can figure is that the heat cycles from the unit cause micro cracks in the solder. A blow dryer heats the solder up just enough to flow enough to make the connection work again. Thanks again!
You know when you see things like this you never think they're going to work and then you try it and you realize that this man is an angel Sent From Heaven to help us because it absolutely 100% worked for me I was up for 48 hours because I literally cannot go to sleep thank you sir
My machine is a 2012 and this trick work in 2021. I actualy put a fan on it after power up. The idea is to dry it a max. Thank for the tip My machine stop working after power break up during the night.
A permanent fix is to replace the 47uf 25v capacitor on the AC power board. Pretty tough to get out...you have to remove the bottom plate, remove the USB stick, then pry the gray top cover off the white inner framing by releasing the cover from the inner hooks on the left & right sides, & the gray top cover comes off...the control knob does NOT have to be removed, it's a magnetic control, that is completely separate from the sensor board behind it. Then disconnect the cable to the front board, & disconnect the heater plate connector & wiggle the two-board sandwich out. The capacitor is a surface mount electrolytic, marked "47"
@@JustinBsDentureJourney True, but eventually, the cap will completely fail, & the machine will not come back on, even after hitting it with a flamethrower.
Thank you so much! I have called every cpap supplier in Quebec City every one of them told me they didn't repair them. Without anny ting to lose I follow your instruction to open my Icon and take out the board on the alimentation side. Brought them to my local electronic repair shop told them to replace both 47uf 25v capacitor.I wasn't sure if both boards were AC power board, but for 4$ a capacitor I didn't take chances. Now my cpap work good as new. Thanks again, you save me over 1000$. ps: The heater trick worked first, but after some time my cpap would turn off on is own.
@@vincentbedard8470 You're welcome...A customer brought me one of these to try to repair, & I then found this video...but was pretty sure about the caps, just had to find where they were. Quebec City is nice, I was there at the Hilton back in the 70's, when I lived in Montreal, NDG, Marcil street
We need to stop accepting that the only machine I can find being sold in the US is this price of crap machine. I'm hating Fisher& Paykel. I need Philips
I followed your advice and it worked a couple of times but I also tried something else which has worked great..I put in the freezer for a good hour and it starts every time.
UPDATE: Got back home tonight from my trip. My CPAP had been in my car which had been parked in below freezing weather. I took my machine inside and put it on my heating pad. This time it took almost an hour but it did work. So now there is a alternative to disassembling my unit. I hope this helps others.
Thank you for this post. I thought you were very clear with how this issue happens and the resolution. My Icon would not come back on after unplugging it. Fortunately, I have a spare for travel. I do not have the required Torque T20 bit, and I’m long overdue getting a set. I’ll apply what you have taught and see how it goes. Curious, though, how these things will just quit running after being unplugged. They worked fine out of the box when new. What changed?
Those boards will start smelling and if you notice it shares the airway paths which means we are breathing in the smell of the bad circuits into our lungs. This is a design problem, do you think?
Surprised these comments are relatively recent. This was a common problem with the Icon machines. F&P finally figured out it is due to that bumpy thing on the power cord, which I guess is a capacitor. Quite a few years ago my supplier called me up and said that F&P had fixed the problem and I was being sent a free new Icon Auto machine (even though my old one was just a Premo)! It still had the bumpy thing on the cord, but I never had the power-on problem again with the replacement.
@@JustinBsDentureJourney I used to live in the Phoenix area and had a great mom-and-pop-ish local provider that wasn't part of the big chains, and good Aetna insurance from my employer. I never had to cough up a dime for my machine or supplies. Alas, I live in SoCal now and went over age 65, so I have to use Medicare and Medicare won't let my old provider ship out of state. I'm overdue for a new machine and decided to get the new F&P SleepStyle but have been pulling my hair out trying to find a SoCal provider. Yelp reviews on all of them (Apria, Lincare, Rotech) are a nightmare! Apparently Medicare makes you rent to own, these providers make you pay up front, charge inflated prices, and they have no real incentive to try to get you reimbursed through Medicare since they already have your money. People have told me it's best and cheaper to just pay out of pocket from one of the online suppliers, forget Medicare. Anyway, Justin, thanks for your quick fix tip. I wish I had known that before F&P sent me the replacement. Even after I finally get a new SleepStyle I will hang onto my Icon as a backup to take on over night trips, etc., so your tip could still come in handy even though so far I've had no problems with the replacement Icon.
My F&P Icon was 3 years old and wouldn’t power up after spending 10 hours in the travel case on a trip from Idaho to Washington State. I had to jump thru hoops with Medicare since it wasn’t due for replacement for 2 more years. Fished Paykel does not repair their units - period. I chose a Resmed Auto Sense 10, which is repairable and much better. No music plays, but this CPAP is very easy to operate and remove and clean the humidifier. No more Fisher Paykel.for me.
Has anyone come up with a more permanent solution? (I've heard of using a european converter (transformer with european to use adapter) to push 230v to the unit and then it works) but I want to take this apart and fix it.
I thought the board got wet so I heated it up on a vent register at my house. Then after it happened again and there was no water i knew it wasn't moisture. I ended up getting a new unit a year later threw my insurance
This only deals with a bad 47MF 35V electrolytic capacitor located on the board. Even if you heat it up, you're gonna end up having to replace it one way or another. I did it 3 years ago. Ran up fine until yesterday. My wife had to unplug it from the wall outlet. She plugged it back few seconds later, but the display never came back on.
Hi Justin, I too have the same devices, and it has a weird problem...for some reason, it does not start, and I mean the power...i connect the wire to the switch, and it does not start, and then when I keep it in front of the Air Conditioners at it starts...i cannot afford a new one at the moment and it's s affecting my life...don't know what to do
Again, think of the extent of FP’s deception. No question the machine does work until it does not. Heating the control board does work. In spoke to an electrical engineer and he indicated a minuscule
This didn't work for me after several attempts. The last one was 15 minutes on high. Here is what ChatGPT said anyway. Heating a circuit board can potentially get it working again due to a phenomenon known as "reflow soldering". Over time, the solder that holds the components on the circuit board can develop microscopic cracks due to thermal stress, which can disrupt the electrical connections. Heating the board can cause the solder to reflow, filling in these cracks and restoring the connections. However, this is a temporary fix and the cracks are likely to reappear over time. If heating the circuit board of your Fisher & Paykel Icon CPAP machine didn't work, there could be several reasons. Firstly, the problem with your machine might not be due to cracked solder joints, but could be caused by a different issue such as a failed component or a software problem. Secondly, it's possible that the heat from the hair dryer wasn't sufficient to reflow the solder, or that the heat was not evenly distributed and didn't reach all the necessary areas. Lastly, overheating the board can cause damage to sensitive components, so it's possible that the 15 minutes of heat actually caused further issues. If your CPAP machine is still not working, it's recommended to seek professional help. While it's understandable that you might want to avoid the cost of a service agent, attempting to repair a complex device like a CPAP machine without the necessary expertise can result in further damage. If the machine is still under warranty, you should contact Fisher & Paykel or your retailer for assistance. If it's out of warranty, you might want to consider getting a quote for repair from a professional service agent, or potentially replacing the machine if it's old and likely to have further issues in the future. Thanks for the video. Either mine has been apart before without me knowing, or they put Loctite on the screws in the factory!
Chatgpt only responds to the words you put into it. To reflow the solder would have to heat above 350 degrees f. That is not what is being recommended. As an electronics tech I admit this hack seemed strange but it worked for me and I don't care to try and understand why. With that in mind what I did was plug it in and lay it on the side with a small bathroom heater 8 inches away blowing at the bottom. I cane back 15 min later and it was on. That was after leaving it plugged in all night with no result. Whatever is being heated it's not the solder but it is working. Machine has been on 24 hrs now.
@@JustinBsDentureJourney yes I just figured that out in Google. 😆 I took it apart and realized she was a little rusty.. took the screws out and put some clipper oil on the two ends that spin, turned it on, let it spin, wiped off and it works again.. not sure for how long but hopefully long enough for my next machine upgrade. I've had this one since 2014 I think. It's a lot louder now tho... 😅
Hello Justin, this is Jackson. I know you are a CPAP user and you may need one CPAP cleaner, are you interested in test my newest portable CPAP cleaner? If yes, kindly pls reply to me, thanks.
Right! But Fisher Paykel is aware of the issue but is unwilling to repair/replace. We owe you gratitude but why should a consumer be required to follow this process? There is a design defect but FP does not want to recall because of cost . FP would rather have the consumer spend another grand.
@@paulklenk9605 I fix major appliances. I see what happens with all manufacturers. Unless it’s a safety hazard, they won’t take responsibility for their issues. They don’t want to fork out money to fix known issues. They only do recalls because the government forces them to. Appliance companies would be put out of business if they took care of all known issues.

This time it took almost an hour but it did work. So now there is a alternative to disassembling my unit. I hope this helps others.
Good to hear. Def an alternative.
Thank you!!!
Wow!!!! Thank You
Thank you for this post.
I'm thinking the capacitor that is on the board is failing. And heating it up, gets it to connect again.
thank you!!!!
Thanks
Those boards will start smelling and if you notice it shares the airway paths which means we are breathing in the smell of the bad circuits into our lungs. This is a design problem, do you think?
Thank you so much! Those who clicked dislike must be too excited to get their shaking hand to click on the right button
It still had the bumpy thing on the cord, but I never had the power-on problem again with the replacement.
tempehuck I guess my CPAP supplier sucks because they never contacted me or checked into it when I called them on the issue.
Even after I finally get a new SleepStyle I will hang onto my Icon as a backup to take on over night trips, etc., so your tip could still come in handy even though so far I've had no problems with the replacement Icon.
tempehuck my current machine is a resmed airsense 10. I love it.
I now have the resmed airsense 10. I love it
Has anyone come up with a more permanent solution? (I've heard of using a european converter (transformer with european to use adapter) to push 230v to the unit and then it works) but I want to take this apart and fix it.
Justin, how did you figure this fix out, and were you able to get it repaired?
I thought the board got wet so I heated it up on a vent register at my house. Then after it happened again and there was no water i knew it wasn't moisture. I ended up getting a new unit a year later threw my insurance
@@JustinBsDentureJourney well, thanks again! This fix is keeping mine alive until I get my next sleep study.
I did this for a long time. It’s helped a lot of people.
hi, do you know how to fix error 5.08?
This has worked 5x's now. One time it would only power on for 2 hrs then I would have to disassemble and repeat
Hi Justin, I too have the same devices, and it has a weird problem...for some reason, it does not start, and I mean the power...i connect the wire to the switch, and it does not start, and then when I keep it in front of the Air Conditioners at it starts...i cannot afford a new one at the moment and it's s affecting my life...don't know what to do
What key (tool) can you use? Thank you
Listed in description. Torque T20
@@JustinBsDentureJourney thank you
Ive been trying this out and i have no luck did you ever figure out the problem for a permanent fix
I did the freezer method and it worked
Pops off easy?? Not mine
Oh no it did it again and it’s not working tried heating it up and nothing time for a new one now I guess
My fan is having too loud noise.. Ehat should i do? Sounds like broken
Sounds like the fan is just bad. I can’t find anywhere to just get a new fan.
Bonsoir je pourrais avoir l’explication en français si possible
That is not to imply that other issues are not involved. Electronics go bad over time and this model is getting old.
Google
Class 2 Device Recall Fisher & Paykel Healthcare ICON CPAP
Mine says error code 5.02 in this dead mode? Any ideas?
5.02 is an issue with the motor. They recommend to unplug then plug back in. If still, motor needs replaced
Thanks for the help! I needed your video regardless 😁 I put mine on top of the heater vent instead haha
Hello Justin, this is Jackson. I know you are a CPAP user and you may need one CPAP cleaner, are you interested in test my newest portable CPAP cleaner? If yes, kindly pls reply to me, thanks.
Now, let's look at some metrics. Since you have 95 comments then this is a KNOWN issue. Looks as if FP has opted to ignore the issue.
11k views, so I’m sure close to that many had this problem if they searched and watched this
Tried it, didn’t work😒
Sorry.
