    A few years ago, I was working in a small club. They booked Winger and I immediately picked that night to work. When I walked into the venue, they were doing soundcheck and it all sounded just like back in the day. After soundcheck, I ran into Reb a few times in a back hall by the offices and he was not only nice, but apologized to me thinking he was in my way. It was hard to work that night listening to the sold out crowd and the band sounding so tight. They never sucked.

    The truth is this: anyone who has any kind of genuine knowledge about music immediately recognized just how talented the guys in Winger really were. Virtuosos, all. Reb Beach is one of the most legendary axeslingers from the 80s/90s and remains a monstrous player to this very day. Kip Winger is a classically trained musician, incredibly melodic composer and monster bass player. Rod Morgenstein is equally killer on the skins.
    Yes, Winger contributed to the criticism with some questionable song titles. Or were they playing 4D chess and following the road that there's no such thing as bad publicity.
    I have loved them since they first came out. Proudly. And enjoy their work and their solo efforts to this very day.
    Screw everyone else. And Lars. XD

  • @Revy_Nayle

    I met the whole band after a concert, when they came here in Italy for the Frontier Festival, in 2025.
    Me and my band's bassist decided it would have been a good idea goin to the artist entrance-exit of the venue, where they would take their ride to the hotel, to get some of albums/instruments signed. It was their last show in Italy and we couldn't lose the chance to actually meet them. There wasn't many people with us waiting, i had my guitar and my band mate his Winger albums.
    I remember specificaly that Kip Winger, before their ride was about to go to the hotel, saw me with my guitar in hands and made a wide smile on his face. So, they stopped their van in the parking lot and they came out if it to take pictures and sign stuff. They're not just excelent musicians but also big hearted people that gave inspirations to me and my band, specifically Kip Winger (who's also a classical music composer, directing orchestras) and Reb Beach (being one of my inspirations on the guitar).
    It's a shame how we people act just like sheeps and pretend something sucks after hearing it out from someone else, without giving it real context. Perhaps if people weren't so close minded, Winger would have been WAY bigger.
    They're my heroes and inspiration, i'll never forget them. \m/

    I have a podcast called 1Track where I interview living composers, and I was lucky enough to interview and have a conversation with Kip a few years ago. What you said about him being a great guy is absolutely true. I, like you (I think we're about the same age) only remembered Winger from the hair metal days and Beavis & Butthead, but years later, I found out that Kip has been writing orchestral classical music. This interview turned into one of the greatest musical stories I've ever heard, and is a real testament to his talent and his desire to keep making music and to continue growing as an artist. He's the real deal, despite how he and his band were portrayed back in the 90's.

  • @johnlangemusic
    @johnlangemusic 24 дні тому +4

    Pull and Winger IV are 2 of the best hard rock albums ever. Not to mention, Kip Winger's solo album "This Conversation Seems Like a Dream" is a masterpiece! It features guitar virtuoso Andy Timmons on lead guitar. Winger is winding it down, and Kip is concentrating on writing classical music, and a couple of years ago has been nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Classical Composition for his debut Classical Release "Conversations With Nijinsky"

    Winger was the Real Deal. And Reb Beach? He's been in my top 10 for years 👍

  • @athlonen
    @athlonen 25 днів тому +23

    I will say this. It takes a LOT OF BALLS to even think one is good enough to replicate, let alone try to replace George Lynch, especially during his days in Dokken. But as people don't realize, Reb Beach was asked to join Dokken, which he did for their album Erase The Slate, in 1999/2000. One of his biggest influences was George Lynch, and it actually shows in the phrasing in the solos for Seventeen, and You are the Saint, I am the Sinner, off of In the Heart of the Young. there are 3 licks in those solos that scream Lynch, and Reb pulls them off flawlessly.
    As for the band, the entire band is completely underrated, as everyone is phenomenal. Morgenstein played with the Dixie Dregs, with Steve Morse, who were also huge. And before jumps on Kip Winger, they need to realize that the dude composed a couple of symphonies that were played by the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, as during that time in the grunge era of music, his wife died, so to get himself back into life, he went back to something he was doing before Winger and Alice Cooper, which was classical music and ballet. The guy has chops.. hell, the entire band has chops that those in the grunge era and those who say they suck could only WISH they had.

    The gall Lars Ulrich has to mock Winger when that band has a better musical pedigree and could play circles around Metallica. As for the controversy around "Seventeen", you've got to take that shit with a grain of salt. What Kip sang about in that song is what every hormonal-driven male teenager was feeling and thinking at that time. Every nerdy guy wanted to bang the hot cheerleader, but never did, so this song was their way of airing out their frustrations. I don't believe for one f**king second that this band was advocating guys acting like creeps and perverts around underage girls.

    A local classic rock station once put together a show in which Ratt, Quiet Riot, and Kip Winger played. Kip opened and it was just him and an acoustic guitar. Not everybody had arrived yet for the audience, so it was just an intimate gathering with maybe a hundred people watching. I was literally right in front of him. He was so good. He played a few songs and spoke to us like we were his friends. He knew he wasn't the reason most of us were there. His humilty and honesty were refreshing and instantly endearing. Back in the 80s I had heard maybe three of their songs and I wasn't hugely familiar with them, but that day, he completely won my heart. I honestly didn't even stay to hear Ratt of Quiet Riot. Truthfully, I was only there because the father of my girlfriend at the time dragged us there. But I am so glad I watched Kip's entire set.

    Sometime around 1984, I was living in Tampa. I went to a drum clinic with Tommy Aldridge at the old Thoroughbred Music superstore. Tommy decided to bring Rudy Sarso along to play, which I found unusual for drum clinics. During the clinic, the store announced the winner of a contest called the "best guitarist in Tampa Bay." A young Reb Beach took the stage to receive his award, to all the snickers of the crowd. He had short, new-wave style hair and wore a black Miami Vice style suit with rolled up sleeves and bangles on his wrists, all in the midst of a definite metal audience. The scoffing stopped when he was invited to jam with Tommy and Rudy. Scoffing turned to dropped jaws as Reb began to wail. I had no idea what I was witnessing at the time. Obviously that relationship with Tommy and Rudy continued through the years as he went on to play with David Coverdale.

    Kip Winger in an interview talking about Seventeen, "I'm just saying, people are like, 'Oh, how dare you sing this song?' I'm like, 'It's a pop song, man.' You know, it was just a fun pop song. I stole the lyric from Kingdom Come; they had a song on their album called '17' - I was writing the song and I was out of ideas."

  • @therealerikjohnson

    I think the reason no one gives the Stray Cats any flack over "Sexy & 17" is because the narrator of the song is clearly in high school, saying "I ain't goin' to school, it's much too early for me" and how he and his friends "Are gonna do a little number on the teacher when she turns her back. We're gonna cut out of class, meet the girls by the railroad track". We have no such reference in "Seventeen" so we automatically assume that it's an adult lusting over a 17-tear-old girl. Nowadays, that's "creepy and ick". Back then, I went to school with girls who all had eyes for Kip and didn't give a rip about any creep factor.
    I remember seeing the video for "Madalaine" as a MTV World Premiere Video and, immediately after, went to the "wrecka stow" and got the cassette. I spent the next five months learning the rhythm guitar parts. Never missed a Winger show in my area and even got to play a couple of festivals where they were a headliner. I'd still stand up front on Reb's side of the stage, trying to see if I missed anything and still as amazed as I was the first time I heard them.

    Love the new series and the evolving content. Winger had the coolest off time riffs while still being good songs. One of the best concerts ever, but made it so I never needed to hear any Kiss song again. San diego Kiss,Winger, Slaughter. Dana the bass player in Slaughter was amazing and they were awesome, then Winger came up and just destroyed, era of solo sections in the set and between having Paul Taylor playing crazy keyboards and then trading off lines with reb beach and Rod drummer from Dixie Dregs going crazy they were awesome,fired up. Then... After 2+ hours of kiss songs I decided I was over kiss. Sad But True😉

    For me, my issue with Winger came much more from the _video_ for Seventeen vs. the lyrics. Between the generic "performance" video and Kip Winger flashing the whitest teeth in rock & roll, they just screamed corporate rock to me from day one. That said, I might give their later stuff a listen & see if they pulled a Warrant and saved their best for after the fame.
    Also, being named "Kip" is an instant downgrade if you want to be a rocker.

    I thought for sure when you mentioned Easy Come, you were going to say Hangin' On. I bought the debut when it came out, even though I was starting to dive into heavier bands (my user name prob gave that away) but I still liked all kinds of rock and metal (still do) and when I gave the disc a spin the first time, Hangin' On just blew me away. That fret intro into that phrasing riff, holy shit!
    It landed 1/2 way down on "side 2" and I always wondered why that was not a side 1 song, and thought it should have been the first single! Like launch out of the gate; first song on the album, first single with that intro, the heavy based line comes in, come on!
    If any one here is watching this out of curiosity of the band, go query up Hangin' On now and crank it, you will not be disappointed.

    Just clicked play, and I'll already say you don't need to sell me on Winger. I heard them as a Senior in highschool when they broke out in 88/89, and had the chance to really absorb the music before Beavis and Butthead (and grunge) ruined their careers. Reb Beach's guitar playing can melt glass at 20 paces, and the whole group together makes such an awesome noise. Kip Winger is an underrated musician and songwriter-- any clips of he and Reb working together should easily demonstrate that, and there are at least a couple examples out there on youtube for the curious.

He plays a lot more than bass and has written symphonies and I believe movie scores as well as his own solo projects within the rock genre. As a lifetime musician - Winger, to me, is truly every bit a "musicians" band, more than anything else. The level of legendary musicianship and incredible talent that every member of this band possesses, far exceeds countless many of the bands from the original "hair band" era and beyond. Kip Winger is a true inspiration to millions of fellow musicians and fans. Reb Beach and John Roth are both easily in the top 20 greatest guitarists in rock music. Rod Morgenstein is an absolute incomparable machine behind the kit. The fact that the band Winger may be considered a "suck" band by many, says more about those people than it does the band.
