Fascinating convo between Mike, a man of integrity, and the weasel lacking integrity. Mikes strength is in his polite, gentle, but unyielding persistence.
I think people are misunderstanding the husband's position when he flips out about the cabinet color. The cabinet color doesn't matter. This guy has been waiting on a kitchen for half a year and finally the cabinets come in... and there's a mistake. It's a blown up version of everyone else at the table getting their food before you, then when your food does come it's wrong. When you watch a 20 minute episode about it you just kind of roll your eyes that it's wrong. But this guy has been waiting for half a year for those cabinets and for a few minutes his emotions are in overdrive because if they got the color wrong, what else did they get wrong. And he's definitely right to feel that way because if Mike wasn't there to fix problems the whole kitchen wouldn't have worked because they had screwed up the design too.
I agree. It was just built-up emotion about the whole experience. They spent thousands of dollars for all of it to go up in smoke; the wrong color of the cabinets was just icing on the cake.
THANK YOU Mike for going to the Ahole that did that to the family!!!!! People like him should have gone out of business. Wonder how many other homeowners he did that to. Thank you for standing up for that family. God bless.
Beautiful job! -- AS ALWAYS! I hav a wonderful husband who is nonexpressive, too. This homeowner was worn out emotionally. I think he did fine. He is the perfect match for an over expressive wife. He does a GREAT job all the time with great angles, distances, unexpected and novel little inserts, he focuses on the real stress of discovery and stresses, and he keeps our attention captive. Great show. Great humanitarian work you do.
Mike summed it up pretty good at the end about how kitchen contractors generally operate. I worked for one in my first secretarial job. It was embarrassing. The owner finished only one job on time because it was a big contract and he hoped to get more from that company. All the others, he knew full well it would be weeks later when he told the customer what time the job would be finished, which was very aggravating to customers. At least he finished the jobs, sort of, before he went bankrupt. Once the customer paid in full and had the cabinets installed, if there was a knob missing or something else needing done, he never returned their calls. He thought he was a clever businessman, but the only business talent he had, from my perspective, was the gift of schmooze, which is how he managed to get jobs.
My house has that 1950's round stove vent. There's a pull chain that releases a outside flap door and starts the fan. You can still buy them. Mine had a bad motor. I replaced it and the vent works great.
This sounds like the contractors a friend in Alabama had. They never finished anything. When she sued, the contractor came out 4 times and vandalized the place. The law never did anything to him because he is friends with the sheriff.
In a few other episodes one can tell that one or more of the owners isn't happy about something. However, this is the only episode I've seen where one of the owners was outright upset straight to Mike and the crew about something. Even in the final scene the husband looks pissed. Wonder if the couple stayed together? Or if the husband switched out the kitchen cabinets later on.
I don't recall any other episodes where the homeowner seemed unhappy, but I think you are right about that guy. It sounds like the cabinets weren't exactly what they had originally ordered. But the wife was totally right. They look just fine. Let them install them. Mike was in a no win situation in that case. He did everything he could to straighten out the situation. But there were a lot of things working against him. It took weeks just to get the contractor to deliver on the cabinets. And that was after Mike came to his place in person to talk to him about it on camera. Which was absolutely the right move. Weasels like that will stonewall you and never return your calls. Confronting them in person is usually the better move.
depending on the type of finish was it laminate or actual wood veneer it could be re-stained to another colour sometimes its as simple as a extra coat of varnish to make it a bit darker.
It wasn't Mike's fault the it was the cabinet people delivered the wrong ones and the husband was upset about it but if you don't accept the cabinets only because they were the wrong color you delay getting your kitchen finished even longer the wife was like I just want a kitchen I can cook in ,the cabinet color can be changed by painting or staining and you could get different cabinet doors ,Mike needed to get on to help his next family in trouble.
Man, I just love Mike Holmes... now I know that most contractors are not even following codes because of him. Be wary and be informed before any projects.

This was a very weird situation. The husband is so ungrateful that he pissed on / bit the hand of the one who was helping them! Yes they didn't get the correct stain color, if they were "custom" cabinets - I'm a monkey's uncle - those looked like semi custom cabinets at best. You could have gotten them just like that at home Depot or such for less!
With the things that the contractor 'helpers' did, I am so glad that I was a bitch about keeping my steam radiator in the kitchen. I walked in to them ready to cut the pipe to the 2nd floor heating as well.
The huspand was definitely not satisfied, from the moment they opened the truck to show off the Kitchen Cabinets. He evidently paid for something special and instead... he got Plain Oak with a Particle Board Counter-top.
Mike was able to recoup the homeowners' monetary loss by going directly to the contractor and demanding the cabinet stock that they had prepaid for. Otherwise, their payment would have been pissed in the wind. Since the cabinets are made to order, the contractor might have cut costs, and ordered the generic stock at the supplier. This indicates that he had some intention of installing the cabinets, but he had no money to pay his supplier. The homeowner was pissed that he did not get his color stain, but beggars cannot be choosers, at this point of no return.

If I'm the shady contractor, I'm GONE as soon as I'm off the phone with Mike! The guy really wasn't too bright!
Painting cabinets is the way to go so as long as they aren't old cabinets with boring doors. Although I suppose even in that instance you could replace the doors alone and give everything a facelift. Older cabinets are probably way stronger than the new cabinets with thinner wood and such.
So the cabinet maker would not let the contractor have the cabinets because the contractor owed him money? This is fair in concept. But I feel like the cabinet maker should have called the customer to let them know.
Was it just me, or were there others that kinda sorta wanted to pimp slap the husband for being a douce. First, it was the wrong color stain, and at the end, not even one comment or smile. Not one sign of truly being grateful...💩💩
No, he was not justified. You can be angry at the original contractor but you don't piss on / bite hand of the one who is fixing the problem.
