How to Cut Patterns

- Step 2 of my sewing video s teaching you how to take a store bought patterns and turn it into your own masterpiece. This video I show you how to transfer your tissue pattern pieces to fabric pattern pices
I would also add that the grainline matters because it changes the way the fabric moves and flexes. With a woven fabric, cutting on the grainline makes the fabric stiffer, and gives more form and structure. Cutting diagonally to the grain gives the fabric flex and elasticity. If you have a loose weave fabric cutting some pieces on the grain and others not will also result in visible changes in the way the fabric looks as well as how it hangs. Before synthetic fabrics and elastics, cutting diagonally to the grain was used to achieve elasticity and form fitting in close cut clothing.

my ears perked up at that too but then she did mention certain fabrics it DID matter. I just wish I had watched this before cutting my pattern pieces last night. Nothing huge just need to draw the notches now. Glad I did not cut them out of the fabric!
Just a note to say that the selvage edge is not the raw edge that is cut (widthways). It is the manufacturer’s edge that runs along the length of the fabric bolt. 🙂

For beginners. Do they still sell the carbon tracing paper instead of the chalk or marker.
Not that I have ever seen unfortunately. ☹️ but do let me know if you find some!
Regular tracing paper runs pretty cheaply though for as low as $7 for a sheet and you can also buy it by the roll at your fabric stores. I usually use a pencil or marker with it

Hi, Great video! I was just wondering that if i wanted 2 layers of the 'cut on fold' piece, would i have to cut out that piece twice? Since the others aren't on the fold they are automatically double layered (when the fabric is folded in half) but cutting on the fold results in 1 piece.
Correct. If you want more than one piece cut on a gold you will have to cut another separately or fold your fabric so that it is folded twice. This can be tricky and depending on if you fabric is too thick it may be hard to cut.
Be sure to double check your regular pieces that are not on the fold. Since they result in 2 separate piece, check if the pattern says “cut 1” or “cut 2”
You will need to double it if you are double layering.
Instead of double layering you could look at what you chose as your lining fabric as well

I should know this, but I've been away from someone for about two decades. Do you put the right sides together for the wrong size together when cutting out pattern pieces? I see that you have your fabric wrong side together so I wanted to make sure that was correct.
I would lay your pattern piece on the right side of your fabric when cutting.
With this fabric the right vs wrong side didn’t matter too much to me since they were practically identical

@@thewolfsdenDIY I learned so much today watching this video would love for you to explain the McCalls pattern showing in more detail cutting line sizes and info on the pattern pc what each symble means so needed on a Mc pattern no one has done this thank you so much.
Do you have the fabric wrong sides together or right sides to?
Always sew with Right sides together unless otherwise told in your sewing patterns. This particular fabric did not have a right or wrong side so it did not matter in the end. Hope this helps!
How can transfer my pattern to cardboard
To do that I would cut the pattern out of the original tissue paper and copy it over onto your cardboard. If you are a crafty person you could glue the pattern onto the cardboard and then apply a sealer such as “ModPodge” to protect it
