I'm always surprised when I see your platform barriers. We in Germany got rid of them since 1960. It is a truly great looking station, I don't think I have ever seen such a nice looking station in Germany ever.
I was the guy wearing the Underground hat and orange fleece. It was an absolute blast getting to attend a station opening for the first time and I was there for about nine hours lol
I noted 2 design flaws: - No clock in the concourse visible when you're looking at the departure board. - No RLU car stop, so even though the architect has clearly designed the canopies to accommodate 8 cars, all trains go right to the end & the front 2 carriages are outside.
Mm shinny new station. Whilst in the North, Deansgate station shuts during the evening as it cannot cope with a few extra people for the Christmas Markets.
Thoroughly engaging video actually, and I agree it's a station of two halves. I thought it flowed very well, and at least everything worked as you say!
Lovely video, one of the earliest out, very enjoyable, giving a good intro to the station without being too analytical, and with nice touches like showing other UA-camrs. Made my Sunday evening viewing.
The only new station opening I've been to was the original opening of "New South Ferry", the southern terminal of the 1 train here in New York, in March of 2009. The station was open all of about 20 minutes before a water main break uptown suspended 1 service. The original station, which still exists but is closed off, was a loop track that only had a five car long platform, but the trains are 10 cars long. So every car had multiple posters reminding people they needed to be in the front five cars to exit. when service was stopped, two 10 car trains were stuck in the station. Everyone there; the MTA workers, the officials, the police and the railfans, all started raiding the trains for the posters as souvenirs.
Well, that’s quite a station isn’t it? Some excellent architecture. If it’s only getting thameslink trains, why does it need 4 platforms? Thanks for getting up so early!
Brilliant video Jen, this is a nice station, I'll visit when the weather gets warmer. The Midland Main line just had to go wrong for this opening didn't it? lol
Fab - can go to Wing Yip by train now. Wonderful! And thanks for the review - excited to travel there and see the station for myself - didn’t not know ie before I saw the link to your review on Twitter. PS why didn’t you get off at Cricklewood given you purchased a ticket to … Cricklewood?
Whatever the anticipated demand is going to be it is amazing how much money there is for new stations in the South rather than the stations in a box concept used elsewhere in the UK. Levelling up, was it anything other than a catch phrase?
Thank you JenOnTheMcCloud. lol. It looks like a very nice new station compared to most other recent openings. Reminds me a bit of Meridian Water? The only glaring omission which I bet will be controversial is the lack of a ticket office. I wouldn't mind betting that they'll have to retrofit one in before long.
I was the first person there at 0500 this morning. I expected more people and was surprised I was the only one. Whilst waiting I had a chat with the driver of the first 316 bus (no passengers). Great to have a new station in London. But no litter bins (Geoff take note, a shorter video!) only toilets on one platform and the communication from staff was frankly abysmal, particularly about the service disruption, and no update on the platform screens advising such. Although all three ticket machines worked (I managed to get the first publicly issued tickets from two of them) one was later out of service. Marginally better than GWR! See you at East Linton for the next and 8th station opening of the year!
The toilets only being on the single platform makes sense as in normal service they’ll be the only ones used. This morning was the exception rather than the rule… I forgot to cover this in the video
@@JenOnTheMove it was a bit random this morning! It wasn't clear exactly which were fast/slow/up/down platforms, although the logical position is the straightest tracks would be the fastest, so 2 & 3. See you Wednesday!
What a nice looking station! It looks like it should feel nice and light during the day too. Not a fan of there being no way to buy a ticket with cash...! But yeah what a nice place 🙂 great video as always!! 😃

Just to correct you about the buses. The 316 was extended from Sunday to the west side of the station. However on the east side, safety concerns about construction work right against the road planned to be used, has delayed the 189 from serving the station for some time. There is also an intention to extend the 326 to the station as well.
That would have been a dilemma if both trains arrived at the same time But full credit to you for being there at silly o'clock on a cold December Sunday morning to ride the first train
Woood is such a wonderful material. Did you know you can make houses of it? :-D You should go to Skellefteå and see the 20-storey house made of wood. And it's not cold where you are, it's not even cold here today, only -4, so much warmer than the -20 we had last week. Dress for it and you'll be fine (there's a thermo skirt, just so you know, and that's a very good start). Love from Sweden!
This station looks amazing. And I'm glad its not a flat-pack like so many others nowadays (although it is London, like Barking Riverside (and even Meridian Water tbh), so I'm not surprised). Very odd to see a 700 in the EMR platforms at St Pancras though. I'm hoping to drive to Cricklewood later and do this station once the rain has stopped.
Great video Jen! I'm always a little jealous when London is able to build infrastructure before the houses are built, whereas the rest of the country always struggles.
It's always good to see a new station opening, but it does make me feel a bit sad, as we can't get the government to fund a cheap £15m station that would serve a huge industrial park.
You should be able to have the option to get off FLIXBUS & National Express coaches in the Brent Cross area as the coach may take an hour to get from the end of the M1 to Victoria Coach Station
There used to be the Golders Green stop, that was good. Used to get a chopped liver sandwich, then go on the tube into central London. Probably got in at the same time as the coach.
You correctly picked the 2nd train to be the first .. well done ! If there had been a very late change, would you have bought a new ticket to travel in the other direction ?
I bought my ticket after I learnt about the delay, so bought for southbound… but then had to go buy another one anyway as I changed my plan to go all the way into that London!
The overbridge is open 24/7 so generally there won't be a specific opening time per se. Apparently it's not a public right of way though; Network Rail (as landowner) prevent this with declarations made at least every 20 years under Section 31 of the 1980 Highways Act, AFAIUI. Even on the rail passenger side of things, the station gets a 24-hour service (biggest gap 60 minutes between calls) Mon-Sat by dint of access to both Luton and (overnight only) Gatwick airports. Engineering works or delays aside, anyway.
That looked really cold! It was strange because here in New Zealand's Winterless North, the weather is quite mild. (Even if it's 1 o'clock in the morning.) Well done for Jen, for enduring an English December morn.
The "retail park" side did look like the back-end of the shops I think they are likely orientated in the other direction and looking at the map the railway line is running parallel to the A5 (Edgware Road) and they were definitely built to be on that.
I stayed last night on the west side, and being honest, did not feel like a safe area at all. I’ll be surprised if that retail park is still there in 10 years
@@JenOnTheMove As it happens, Brent Council are developing a masterplan for Staples Corner and are looking to publish a draft version next year. Ah right so Cricklewood station is to remain as it is. Hopefully Cricklewood station will have platforms extended to accommodate the 12-Car Class 700/1 trains.
