I’m sorry but Krusty Towers is an honorary golden episode. Literally every single line is iconic and it’s just absurd joke after joke after joke, it never slows down. One of my absolute favorites. IMDB also seems to agree as it’s the highest rated of season 4 and higher rated than even many Season 1-3 episodes. “We shall never deny a guest, even the most ridiculous request!”, “This is a hotel??”
Hash Slinging Slasher being their way of saying he's a drug dealing murderer to get the adult joke past censors is probably the best instance of an adult joke in any kids cartoon ever

I loved every story, and the adventures I went on with all of my underwater friends in Bikini Bottom. This video legitimately made me cry, because I can remember SpongeBob being there for me through so many things I went through as a kid. There are some episodes that, while not being written so well, made me laugh over and over again, no matter how bad I felt inside. Thank you for this. This is me with Simpsons, but even then there weren't any title cards, I just found out the Simpsons' episodes had any names at all well after the fact, like 2013 or so The Title Card for Spongebob was part of the appeal, along with the music accompanying the episode, like "Something Smells"....so sinister and funny given the context
@@fruitpun6h Agreed! Not only is it a really fun episode, but it also genuinely has one of my personal favorite jokes in the series: Mr. Krabs: *freaks out about the hospital bill* Squidward: You're not gonna have a heart attack, are you? Mr. Krabs: Not at THESE prices!
Shanghied is still my favorite Spongebob episode. There are so many good jokes and underrated lines in it. One of my favorite lines in the show is from this episode. It’s when the Dutchman tells SpongeBob and Patrick that he’s going to eat them. They scream then Patrick says “wait, I have an idea”, SpongeBob says “what is it Patrick!?” and he responds with “let’s leave”. It doesn’t really seem that funny when I explain it, but it makes me crack up every time I watch the episode.
There were some weird rankings I won’t lie. Squidward the unfriendly ghost for example being way to low imo. But having pickles as number 1 might be one of the most based opinions on the internet. I had such an emotional connection to this episode and I’m glad you see it too.
This i've seen. This was like now the tenth ranking kf the golden era episodes where apparently i'm the only guy to enjoy all 3 s3 specials(all 22 min)
I specifically remember thinking "I think this show might be bad now" when I saw Chimps Ahoy as a child. Probably the first time I ever had a critical thought about a TV show.
For me it was the "Best Day Ever" episode. I remember watching the musical number at the end with my sister and both thinking to ourselves "Wow this is lame as fuck"
For me it was A Pal for Gary. Even though there were some old ones i didn’t like that much (i was a teenage gary/squirrel jokes), it felt so mean-spirited and anti-fun to watch that it made me lose a lot of my love for Spongebob in general. I always changed the channel when it came on
I never watched the Christmas episode on TV. I had to watch it online out of curiosity because it was the only OG Spongebob episode I had never watched
I was born in the late 90s and grew up watching SpongeBob. It's such a strange feeling to see an old episode of SpongeBob that I never knew existed until now.
This is the first time that I thought about every single golden age Spongebob episode in such detail, and it made me realize how much the show influenced my values growing up. I'm convinced that I'm a better, more rounded person because of it. All thanks to Stephen Hillenburg and his little show. Rest in peace, Stephen.
Crazy how Squidward dominates the top 10, proving he is the best character to interact emotionally, plot-wise, psychologically, socially, comically with SpongeBob in the entire show
It is amazing, but so are all the top 5s. They are all amazing. I do agree that Pickle should be nr 1, but I do understand why anybody would take any of the top 5 and put them as their number 1. :-D
S4 and S5 slept on ngl. People still say they’re good but I feel like it’s more out of obligation than anything. Squidward in Clarinetland is honestly one of my favs
"maybe you can get away with it the first few years of airing it to kids, they'll just laugh about it, but when those kids grow up and make a UA-cam video tier listing your episodes 20 years later, this one will be in F tier." These are the things that keep me up at night.
Made me cry how the fact that the two best episodes of this childrens show is the community rallying behind the two most important characters right when their wills are finally broken, both feeling like their purpose in life had been failed, until the people come together and let them know "Hey regardless of how much you annoy us, we respect and value you as one of our own and we want you to succeed".
@@lvl1rock I just finished the whole video after starting it a couple days ago, brilliant job man, I might have swapped some around but like you said, they're all so good!
I’m glad you addressed karate island because I remember riding hard for that episode and then rewatching it present day and it has NO substance or anything clever like at least frycook games had funny and relevant events
Yeah Karate Island is basically Og dragon ball Muscle tower but without any of the funny jokes. We even have a chubby fish that is exactly like the monster Goku fights
While Plankton is the most prevalent villain, I totally agree that Bubble Bass is arguably the best and most underrated of Spongebob villains, even more evil than Plankton. Why? Because he was he one of the few antagonists to almost singlehandedly cause the Krusty Krab to go bankrupt. He psychologically wrecked Sponge so bad that it forced Squidward to be the new fry cook. But his food was terrible and caused the customers to leave. Had this continued, Mr. Krabs would have went out of business for good, all because of ONE lie. Sure Krabs could've hired someone else, but who else could match Spongebob's fry cook skills AND work for cheap? Even besides that, Bubble Bass is a rare character that really tests Spongebob's fortitude. Him being a lazy, bossy, spiteful, overly-pedantic, and dishonest person in sharp contrast to Spongebob's hard working, easygoing, friendly, accepting, and honest personality. Nowadays, Bubble Bass is just a harmless neckbeard that lives in his mom's basement and is completely useless. But I'll always prefer Season 1 Bubble Bass as a really effective antagonist.
It’s actually so accurate, season 4 is such a departure from the 1st 3 and the show never came back. I would have left season 4 off entirely if it wasn’t considered OG. It’s so bad compared to some of greatest cartoon television of all time.
The amount of top tier episodes i never got to see as a kid is criminal, ESPECIALLY sandys rocket and pizza delivery, im tempted to rewatch spongebob now just to relive the nostalgia but also finally get to see these gems
Whatever other people say, holy shit dude, the whole video is an absolute masterpiece. Sure, some ranks in the lower tiers may have been interchangeable, yet the leading episodes of each tier (including SS) depict a real understanding of what makes the whole series (season 1-3 lol) such a memorable masterpiece to this day. With nostalgia in mind, sure, those earlier episodes stick way deeper in out memories than that soulless crap modern Spongebob is, but with so many episodes representing and explaining current topics such as strikes, existentialism and human interaction in manifold it really shows how it is something more than just silly jokes. Thank you a lot for the time and effort that went into creating this list!
Never thought of Pickles like that, but now thinking about it that way and looking back at it, it’s a phenomenal episode, especially considering it was season one
Amazing; thank you for giving me a new appreciation for these episodes on such a deeper level. I never thought I’d hear such an analysis of Pickles of all episodes; well done.
Sb-129 is my all time favorite episode of all time. About damn time it gets some love. I am a huge sucker for reality bending and breaking episodes. Its fantastic. This and ed edd and eddy. I love episodes that just randomly go into that realm of WHAT?!
Whoah, you too mentioned Ed Edd and Eddy here! I just posted my two cents in a comment here mentioning how I have never laughed so hard to a cartoon as I did watching The Strangler episode. Except for when I was 4 years old and watched a specific Ed Edd and Eddy episode where they built a dangerous roller coaster and rode it almost flying. I was so filled with excitement and thought it was hilarious! I have never seen either that scene or that episode since I was 4, and I'm 26 now. And I still remember that scene vividly. Thank you for your comment and thank you for reading and I wish you a great day!
Jesus I didn’t rember season 4 having such a nose dive in quality compared to the first three seasons don’t get me wrong there are some bangers but the quality just flew straight down
This video gave me a new appreciation for spongebob, thank you I need to get whatever streaming service it's on.. i remember growing out of the show, but I'd guess that what actually happened was the episodes just became more annoying as the seasons went on. This video also made me remember so many episodes and scenes i forgot about! And just how much spongebob has affected us and how we unknowingly quote it all the time. It's like one of those things that can connect any two people (with limitations, obviously depends on the age group) Also, i gotta watch the spongebob movie again. I remember enjoying it SO much as a kid
respect all these takes but i actually really liked the episode where they all turn into snails, its like uncharacteristically fucked up body horror for early spongebob and reminds me of 90s nickelodeon cartoons like ahh real monsters
i think your breakdown and reasoning for each tier is excellent and revisiting the original list from the 2000s is an awesome idea. as others in the comments have suggested, you can debate placements of your favorite episodes and moments amongst yourselves, but the overall curation and quality of the video is amazing! i love the style of OG spongebob tier list/video essay’s and this is up there with the best. great work man.
I know it's an easy argument to make that any kid from any era feels the same way as any other kid from any other era about their respective favorite childhood shows. And maybe there's a good amount of truth to that, but I don't think that means that shows don't vary in quality. And I'm biased because I was born in 1998, and still quote Spongebob in daily life to friends who also remember it as fondly, but I've also seen a lot of television and I don't think that it's very common whatsoever for a show aimed at an audience for children is so well written, acted, animated, has such great music, memorability and constant bar raising creativity. The show always demanded respect by respecting its viewers. It can be hard to be grateful for things in a mind that constantly resets itself in the present, assessing for threats and anxieties and "is that person looking at me?" But it's nice to be able to step back and appreciate how lucky we were to be at the right time and place and age to see this masterpiece of a show. Also, incredibly well made and satisfying video. I can tell how much time this took you to make and it's inspiring how committed you must have been. I may update this comment as the video goes on to include other blunders such as SKILL CRANE BEING OUTSIDE THE TOP 100!? WHAT!? Skill Crane is Top 50. C'mon! But the passion I feel for disagreeing with you is the same passion you felt that drove you to correct that abhorrent and distasteful list that was somehow voted on.

I only watched like three episodes of SpongeBob in my life, I never liked tv so I never really saw most of the popular cartoons. But here I am, watching a marathon of long SpongeBob related videos for some reason. At least the "lore" is really easy to follow lol
55:32 Not to mention it has three endings.. but the only cons to those endings is the fact that two of them end the same way with the Flying Dutchman eating them. SpongeBob's won with them turned into fruit in a blender and chased by the Flying Dutchman as a vegetarian, as SpongeBob wished for in his ending.
Man I gotta say as a fan of the show and as someone who’s watched a lot of top ten lists on epsiodes, seeing you pick genuine choices and not just going with obvious fan favourites was so satisfying. Seeing pickles at the top was so cathartic haha. Finally someone who loves that episode as much as I do! Dunno if it’s the number 1 for me but top 3 for sure.
I never rewatched pickles as an adult. I always considered it just another episode. But the way you pointed out literally everything that episode did right, is way WAY beyond what any kids can comprehend. Its the same reasons i am a huge fan of G4 MLP, so many golden moments kids wont understand until theyre older Its what made both shows for all ages, not just kids
That pickles episode is also my number 1 😂 not only it's like redemption arc or something but the amount of bubble bass throwing squidward was really making me laugh 🤣
Pickles in SS tier is so based. Its always been my favorite episode, not just for the humor but because of the strong writing going on with Spongebob facing not only his nemesis but a loss of confidence in himself, then bouncing back from it. Plus it gets points for the spagetti-western motifs at the final showdown in the Krusty Krab
That list in 2006 was definitely mostly voted by really young kids at that time whose favorites were the most recent. I was 14 by 2006, so I had not really been watching for 2 years. From 99 to 2003 are the best ones.
Starting at like #100 I went "Man, this is THAT low?" just to then go "oh yeah fair that episode's ALSO great". Golden Era Spongebob is one of the best cartoons ever made.
I kinda find it funny that, if Stephen Hillenburg's plan to end spongebob after the movie went through, the strangler episode would've been the last episode of the original show before the movie. I dunno, I just kinda find it funny that would've been the note they would've ended it on.
Pizza Delivery gotta be my favourite episode of all time. That “Krusty Krab Pizza, is the pizza for you and me” sequence had me DYING when I was a kid.
The squeaky boots x danny brown comparison is ON POINT Also i SWEAR they aired a version of the employee training video where the secret ingredient was ACTUALLY revealed at the end.

This video legitimately made me cry, because I can remember SpongeBob being there for me through so many things I went through as a kid. There are some episodes that, while not being written so well, made me laugh over and over again, no matter how bad I felt inside.
Thank you for this. I know it’s just a tier list video, but you really helped me remember just how much this show means to me.
I knew I wasn’t the only one who didn’t know the episode names! I genuinely couldn’t tell you a single one, maybe, just MAYBE 1 or 2 but I couldn’t tell you a single one on the fly
I studied the names on purpose so I would be able to know every single one by heart. I was a weird kid.
This is me with Simpsons, but even then there weren't any title cards, I just found out the Simpsons' episodes had any names at all well after the fact, like 2013 or so
The Title Card for Spongebob was part of the appeal, along with the music accompanying the episode, like "Something Smells"....so sinister and funny given the context
Me too 😢
I loved the ps2 game battle for bikini bottom even got remastered on PS4 to experience some nostalgia
The "my leg!" scream as the SpongeBob universe's Wilhelm scream will never get old.
no weenies allowed at #115 is enough to make me lose all trust in this tier list. that episode is PURE gold!

I was looking for this comment, possibly a top 15 episode for me
You KNOW the comedy of A-tier and onward Spongebob is on point when even clips where he's talking over them still bring tears to your eyes.
Ghost Host above Krusty Towers is kinda wild
eh theyre not that far from each other
Krusty towers is way too low anyways
@@fruitpun6h Agreed! Not only is it a really fun episode, but it also genuinely has one of my personal favorite jokes in the series:
Mr. Krabs: *freaks out about the hospital bill*
Squidward: You're not gonna have a heart attack, are you?

Literally I had this exact same experience. I remember watching and being like…Why isn’t this funny? This is supposed to be funny.
I didn't like them introducing a mammal other than sandy, idk why it felt cheap
For me it was the "Best Day Ever" episode. I remember watching the musical number at the end with my sister and both thinking to ourselves "Wow this is lame as fuck"
For me it was A Pal for Gary. Even though there were some old ones i didn’t like that much (i was a teenage gary/squirrel jokes), it felt so mean-spirited and anti-fun to watch that it made me lose a lot of my love for Spongebob in general. I always changed the channel when it came on
Yeah I remember thinking the chimp characters just didn’t fit within the SpongeBob aesthetic at all, felt wrong
Fun fact: the paper is the rarest episode since it only airs after the Valentine’s Day episode
Not here in Denmark. Because we do not celebrate valentine's day. So that is an American thing.
I didn't even know the paper was an episode before this list don't execute me
I never watched the Christmas episode on TV. I had to watch it online out of curiosity because it was the only OG Spongebob episode I had never watched
@@axelsanchez5849 I had it on dvd as a kid
I was born in the late 90s and grew up watching SpongeBob. It's such a strange feeling to see an old episode of SpongeBob that I never knew existed until now.
This is the first time that I thought about every single golden age Spongebob episode in such detail, and it made me realize how much the show influenced my values growing up. I'm convinced that I'm a better, more rounded person because of it. All thanks to Stephen Hillenburg and his little show. Rest in peace, Stephen.
I love how no commentary was needed for #66
“He was number one!”
Crazy how Squidward dominates the top 10, proving he is the best character to interact emotionally, plot-wise, psychologically, socially, comically with SpongeBob in the entire show
Dying for Pie is still number 1 in my heart. Every joke lands and it is the best-written episode in the whole series.
It is amazing, but so are all the top 5s. They are all amazing. I do agree that Pickle should be nr 1, but I do understand why anybody would take any of the top 5 and put them as their number 1. :-D

I really had to temper my feelings for this list, because I was saying “I really liked that episode” to half of the “F tier” episodes. 😂

The worst episode is the episode when SpongeBob bought a monster for Gary and he treated Gary badly while given love attention to the monster

Flats' dad's delivery of "Great! Now he's gonna kick _my_ butt!" is a line that lives rent-free in my head.
Jesus I didn’t rember season 4 having such a nose dive in quality compared to the first three seasons don’t get me wrong there are some bangers but the quality just flew straight down
I don't think a show has ever nosedived in quality harder and faster than Spongebob after Hillenburg left.
I always defended season 4 as still good, until I actually rewatched/reviewed as an adult
Krusty Towers was a banger but yeah alot of them are bad

This video gave me a new appreciation for spongebob, thank you
I need to get whatever streaming service it's on.. i remember growing out of the show, but I'd guess that what actually happened was the episodes just became more annoying as the seasons went on. This video also made me remember so many episodes and scenes i forgot about! And just how much spongebob has affected us and how we unknowingly quote it all the time. It's like one of those things that can connect any two people (with limitations, obviously depends on the age group)
Also, i gotta watch the spongebob movie again. I remember enjoying it SO much as a kid
respect all these takes but i actually really liked the episode where they all turn into snails, its like uncharacteristically fucked up body horror for early spongebob and reminds me of 90s nickelodeon cartoons like ahh real monsters
If SB-129 didn’t make the top 10 I was going to riot. Good job man.
i think your breakdown and reasoning for each tier is excellent and revisiting the original list from the 2000s is an awesome idea. as others in the comments have suggested, you can debate placements of your favorite episodes and moments amongst yourselves, but the overall curation and quality of the video is amazing! i love the style of OG spongebob tier list/video essay’s and this is up there with the best. great work man.
Salty Spatoon being so far down hurt me
Its crazy that I remember every one of these episodes more than 10 years later. Great ranking !

Rock bottom, pickles, neptunes spatula, and the one with plankton and bob in the beach are my favourites
Rock bottom always made me uncomfortable as kid ngl
Rock Bottom to this day sends shivers down my spine
Man I gotta say as a fan of the show and as someone who’s watched a lot of top ten lists on epsiodes, seeing you pick genuine choices and not just going with obvious fan favourites was so satisfying. Seeing pickles at the top was so cathartic haha. Finally someone who loves that episode as much as I do! Dunno if it’s the number 1 for me but top 3 for sure.
I never rewatched pickles as an adult. I always considered it just another episode.
But the way you pointed out literally everything that episode did right, is way WAY beyond what any kids can comprehend.
Its the same reasons i am a huge fan of G4 MLP, so many golden moments kids wont understand until theyre older
Its what made both shows for all ages, not just kids
That pickles episode is also my number 1 😂 not only it's like redemption arc or something but the amount of bubble bass throwing squidward was really making me laugh 🤣
Pickles in SS tier is so based. Its always been my favorite episode, not just for the humor but because of the strong writing going on with Spongebob facing not only his nemesis but a loss of confidence in himself, then bouncing back from it. Plus it gets points for the spagetti-western motifs at the final showdown in the Krusty Krab
Krusty towers is way too low. For me it’s the best season 4 episode.
That list in 2006 was definitely mostly voted by really young kids at that time whose favorites were the most recent. I was 14 by 2006, so I had not really been watching for 2 years. From 99 to 2003 are the best ones.
I turned 8 in mid 2006 and didn’t even know about this list or voting for it haha
Starting at like #100 I went "Man, this is THAT low?" just to then go "oh yeah fair that episode's ALSO great". Golden Era Spongebob is one of the best cartoons ever made.
The craziest part about rewatching SpongeBob as an adult is discovering Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy were played by Ernest Borgnine and Tim Conway.
Am I supposed to know who they are?
I kinda find it funny that, if Stephen Hillenburg's plan to end spongebob after the movie went through, the strangler episode would've been the last episode of the original show before the movie.
I dunno, I just kinda find it funny that would've been the note they would've ended it on.
Pizza Delivery gotta be my favourite episode of all time. That “Krusty Krab Pizza, is the pizza for you and me” sequence had me DYING when I was a kid.
