So much rich history, and a prime waterfront location... It should have developed into one of the world's main maritime tourist attractions, but most of Port Royal is neglected and looks very run down. Some say the lack of development is a logistics issue others say its too small and uninteresting to matter. But many Caribbean island attractions are smaller than Port Royal and don't have anything but sand and beach to offer yet lots of cruise ships visit them (well, before COVID-19 anyway). Historically, Port Royal is a cut above the rest; unfortunately, neither the Jamaican government nor the local developers understand its true potential. Port Royal is far away from everything (except the airport), but that's part of its charm. UDC/The Port Royal Development Company is planning to gentrify the area...another mistake. Pushing out the poor people who live there now so that the land can be used to build multi-million dollar ocean side villas for rich people will not bring more cruise ships there. Tourists want to see the history and culture, not more concrete or snobby rich people. A better idea would be to reconstruct the city with the aesthetic that it had before the earthquake destroyed it. Add yard-style restaurants and craft shops (with authentic, Jamaican, hand-made stuff) and then you have a product that tourists would want to come and experience. Right now its not up to standard as a competitive port of call for cruise ships....not ready for that. Kudos to the locals for keeping the streets clean, but the place still needs quite a bit of work. The Jamaican government should never have allowed foreigners to come there and remove so many of the artifacts from the area. Many of the pieces are in museums in the USA and Europe when all of them should have been preserved in the local maritime museum. They should ask for these items back. There is also a maritime institute/university that has existed for decades but has never involved itself in a real deep dive exploration to get beyond the more than 10 feet of silt to where much of what was Port Royal is still buried.
There is serious risk from crime in Kingston. Violent crime, including sexual assault, is a serious problem throughout Jamaica, particularly in Kingston and Montego Bay. Jamaica's police force is understaffed and has limited resources. Gated resorts are not immune to violent crime.May 30, 2019

I have travelled on Air Jamaica from Heathrow to Kingston it was a very pleasant trip indeed and my kids enjoyed their flight as well. The cabin crew were faultless...
Air Jamaica is gone but I have a strong feeling that another Jamaican airline will take its place not long from now, not the fake Caribbean Airlines, but as a real authentic Jamaican airline. It can and will be done. There is plenty of money in Jamaica to do it, and it would be very successful as long as the Jamaican government is completely excluded from any involvement in its ownership or management. JetBlue, Southwest, Delta, American, etc have been operating profitable routes in and out of Jamaica for years, but Air Jamaica never could. Why? The old Air Jamaica could not have survived for much longer than it did. Its management made very bad business decisions and kept digging the airline deeper and deeper into serious debt. They did too much expensive 'wet leasing' of aircraft with borrowed money, and they continued to over-extended the airline's operations when they should have been scaling it back. After Butch Stewart got involved he was very obviously more interested in leveraging the airline to feed his hotel business than in running it as a profitable stand alone enterprise, and that failed for many reasons after just a few years. Then there was the 'freeness' issue: politicians and their lackeys, and everybody who was a friend of a friend of one of them were flying free and frequently used Air Jamaica's planes like a taxi service to Miami, New York, and London. Then there was the security issue: frequently, Air Jamaica's jets were detained in the US for transporting vast quantities of ganja. Big fines had to be paid before the jets were released. None of the US airlines operating in Jamaica routinely had that problem the way that Air Jamaica did. Why? There was also VERY frequent and lengthy delays of Air Jamaica's flights. Delays that are related to airline operations issues lead to financial penalties for the airline. All of this stuff added up to Air Jamaica's massive losses over the years. Finally, the IMF and the World Bank told Bruce Golding 'no' when he went back to them for more loans...unless the Jamaican government began divestiture of many of its money-losing assets---including Air Jamaica. But who wanted to buy a money-losing company with liabilities approaching a billions dollars? That was Air Jamaica's big problem. It had to be sold and their weren't any good offers. What Caribbean Airlines actually bought was Air Jamaica's licensed routes, not really the airline itself. The sale wasn't a good deal for Jamaica, but even a bad deal was better than no deal at all when you're as desperate as Golding was. Bruce Golding gave Air Jamaica to them at fire sale pricing and without any of its US $800 million debt (which, btw, was quietly paid by the Jamaican taxpayers). Caribbean Airlines quickly ditched the Air Jamaica livery and got rid of the majority of its leased jets. That was a shame because the Air Jamaica livery was (in my opinion) among the most beautiful designed.
Good to see what the view is like from Port Royal to downtown Kingston

Their is no such thing as " COMPLETION"! "it's all in the .'mine'!
We should take advantage of what we have! Until we can make it better.
