@@chebukosiwasike I believe the govt changed to 8-4-4 to make it harder for students to get into university, because the govt didn't have enough money to fund the number of students who were getting the grades to go to university. In the 70s, Uganda and Tanzania education sector tremendously suffered due to the war (Uganda) and economy (Tanzania; the West and her proxies IMF and World Bank messed up TZ's economy because of Nyerere's Ujamaa policy and his support of the struggle movements of Southern Africa). Meanwhile Kenyans university enrolled numbers were double that of Ug and TZ combined! The British govt asked Moi to shut down the Universities and send students to the UK, but Moi and the Vice Chancellors refused. And rightly so, not only was the govt looking to Africanise the education (generate graduates to solve Kenya's problems), Moi didn't want people to go abroad and come back with long horns (ujuaji). Britain then leaned on the IMF and World Bank to cut back on funding education (as well as healthcare). They insisted the Kenyan govt implement the Structural Adjustment Programmes (cut back on public sector budget i.e public spending). The Moi govt had to cut back on education expenditure, and this included, putting a limit on the number of students enrolling at the University by capping the students to 10,000. To do this, he introduced the 8-4-4 which required students to take 10 subjects (including Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and attain grade B- average. They knew by making Maths and the Sciences compulsory, many students were going to fail to attain the B-. Infact things were so bad, they had to drop the entry grade to a C+. Four years later, they dropped the entry to 8 subjects. Now it is down to 6 subjects with Maths and 2 Sciences compulsory. Meanwhile in the UK, a student can be called to OXFORD or CAMBRIDGE to study LAW without taking Maths or any Sciences at A Level!!! 8-4-4 was introduced to limit the number of children going to University, without the govt being blamed for it, instead students who fail to qualify are labelled dumb.
CBC was something that was shoved down parents throats by the Uhuru government....i remember going for a seminar as a pioneer parent of this CBC and the people explaining it to us had problems because they did not understand it themselves, the issues we were raising were being brushed aside and i remember Mr Sossion and Amina Mohammed saying that the government should give it time to lay down the infrastructure and retrain the teachers but the government was not listening. Here we are 7 years down the line and we are dealing with the same problems while the children are suffering for it.
I agree with Manyasa. Matiangi set the stage for the mess being experienced by both CBC pupils and parents. What's the government 's intentions??? How does a govt gamble with its citizens' education? Unless there is a sinister agenda....
Thank God someone is addressing this mess. Anytime I hear folks say Matiangi for president I shudder at the mess he will impose on other critical sectors. Kenyans should learn to embrace the value of proper planning in policy implementation.
This man Emanuel is the person to be the CS Education ,He has more Common sense than the most of the Officials of kk govt and in the future a President maybe 2032.
The host have wasted time asking what seemed like irrelevants. Only the last 15 minutes are worth listening. Kudos to Manyasa. Matiangi was the worst CS of education Kenya has ever had. Mass failing students to ensure reduced transition to university with the goal of causing financial distress to those universities is both an economic and humanity crime. Matiangi should be prosecuted for economic crimes and treason.
What you talking about,if u deserve to fail,u deserve to fail,in my former school, only the number of A,s were few, apart from that, the results we similar to that of the previous yrs,and btw,the number of university students didn't reduce, pple with c plus actually went to university, right now,u can't get into uni with a C+,a B-u get a useless course that's not worth it

The initial concept was to have an education system that imparts practical skills in our education syllabuses--same as the initial concept that led to 8.4.4 system. However, when it was handed down to technicians for implemantation, they complicated the whole idea.

The question should be was it necessary to change the education system?Tanzania and Uganda have old O level and A level system ( unless am wrong)
Very necessary
@@Haron-lk7bn why necessary? Just explain it to me!

Mr. Manyasa is soft spoken but a very brilliant mind.

Critical discussion. Thanks for posting. Manyasa is very candid.
How Such brilliant mnds are not leading critical sectors such as this is baffling to me.
This is a very healthy conversation,my worry is whether the education cs is watching?

What a headline
You should stop blaming people out of your incompetence
Still they forced it down our throats with threats.
