You did fine young man. Don't listen to these youtube welders. I been welding for 30 years. Personally I prefer a flat smooth weld as opposed to the "whip" style. Nice job little brother.
I use to fix coal train cars for Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific Railroad, our welds wouldn`t pass inspection unless they were flat and smooth. Replacing a gusset, welds could only be to the edge of the gusset to the coal car, if it went over the edge even a fraction of a mm, it had to be redone. But working for B & C steel building red iron beams for buildings they had to be like these welds in this video. So I guess both work depending on, if its your own project and what you prefer.
That what I was going to say, I been welding 40 years and hardly ever try to make ‘ dimes’ . I just make nice even smooth welds. Even TIG welding aluminum I just make nice smooth welds. Sometime I make what look like the ‘ dimes ‘ and go over it and smooth it out. If you are worried about making ‘ dimes’ you are probably not focusing on the penetration and even blending of the metals. Dimes aren’t everything.

The amount of weld pros that say to concentrate on the puddle amazes me. If the settings and travel speed are right just a frequent glance confirms nice even fill. I spend more time looking ahead in my direction of travel so I stay in the groove on light stuff and so my cover passes look great and straight once the weld prep is no longer there to guide you. 36+ years welding with no flashlights taped to my hood and no soapstone lines to guide because I CAN SEE! Simply by using the reflected light of the arc rather than staring at that bright molten puddle all day long.
I’ve been welding for 30 plus years, MIG, TIG, Stick, oxy acetylene, brazing and all that other fun stuff. All I’ve got to say is good job. And thanks for making this video and sharing your tips.

Good tips I’m 63 years old and been knowing how to weld stick/mig for many years but not often enough to be great at it. These videos offer great insights and one tip can help you clean up your bead. Thanks!
Thank you, you taught better than my old high school teacher.. and in a very short time. I had to learn all this stuff on my own and can’t explain it to other people, the half moon is the easiest for me. I will recommend this video to anyone that asks.
I was starting school for welding but had to quit due to money and time. This was a great reminder for me and will help me with my projects. Thank you.
thanks bro i bought a cheap mig welder a week ago and this is very helpful , once i can do some reasonable welds i will be able to do so many things that have needed doing for ages , welding latches to gates , fixing a back board for my truck , adding shit to my log splitter , it will open up so many possibilities
I agree with you 100%. I am 75 and my hands now do a self-inflicted oscillation. But each item and each thickness is approached differently. I was certified to weld Airplanes, Nuke canopy seals, 3/4 inch plate and Aluminum, Stainless (I had my own business) and steel. Also brazing most any brass, bronze, etc. Now that I am retired, I usually just weld for friends and grandson.....and his friends Mountain Crawlers, etc.
Thank you sir. I enjoyed watching your video. You were to the point without a whole lot of unwanted talk. Keep up the good work helping beginners like me to try new techniques. Like stated in previous comment, not cursing and using foul language was refreshing.
OMG bro, you explained it as simple as possible. Less is more in this case because you covered more ground teaching your trade for a beginner. Thanks brother.
All three techniques will deliver different weld profiles. With the push pull method you’ll have more of a concave profile. The cursive e method will produce more of a convex puddle as well as the half moon method. Personally I use push pull 98 percent of everything I do unless I’m tigging. But very helpful content brother to those that are learning.
Thank you for posting this video! Never thought of "drawing" the dimes as a technique but that makes such perfect sense! Thank you again and keep up the good work!

Bryan, good video Thanks brother. A little thing I learned years ago-convert the thickness of the metal to decimal-that is 1/8inch is .125 so that is the amps to start with. Drop it a little, perhaps 90amps, to test it then increase it as you go. An old lad back in the 60s told me that. He gave me my first Lincoln buzz box and yes she still works.
I use the “cursive e” method but at the bottom, I’ll hold it there for a second and then continue. Let’s your weld flatten out a little bit, especially on corner joints. The back and forth motion is really good for filling larger gaps too.

I like your last method best. I’m no welding expert but have been welding my own projects for years. I find the half moon or going side to side of the two parts you’re welding gets better penetration with a mig setup. It’s easy to get a pretty looking bead with a mig that has very little strength. Just my 2 cents worth. Good job man

I was told the most important things are clean material, proper ground, heat, penetration and the right amount of fill and spread. The final step is making it look like pretty. Have you ever cut and inspected your welds? That would be a cool thing to do to show everyone the full process. Your welds look great!
Excellent tips. I had lots of hair loss trying to butt weld old sheet metal to new sheet metal on my car restoration. I finally opted in doing the floor boards by plug welding. Anyway, thanks for the excellent video.

Great video man. Thanks for posting! I’m a beginner and need the technique without all the fluff.
I admire your confidence, keep up the good work. Remember, practice makes perfect.
Honesty one of the best videos I’ve seen on how to make mig look like dimes, and very well explained. Thanks dude.
Thanks for the tips, just got my first mig, need all the help I can get.
I was told the most important things are clean material, proper ground, heat, penetration and the right amount of fill and spread. The final step is making it look like pretty. Have you ever cut and inspected your welds? That would be a cool thing to do to show everyone the full process. Your welds look great!
I like the way you explained everything. Thanks for the video.
When you said "drawing" click, a light bulb got turned on. Damn, I thank you my friend. Be well, be safe, and be kind!
Nice work! Thank you for taking the time to post this. I for one, appreciate it 😊
Excellent tips. I had lots of hair loss trying to butt weld old sheet metal to new sheet metal on my car restoration. I finally opted in doing the floor boards by plug welding. Anyway, thanks for the excellent video.
Sounds like some common sense crept in there.

Perfectly put! Kept it simple as it should be... over thinking only leads to problems.
Good job and thanks
I'm trying to be a hobby welder, have the equipment but lack the skill. Your welds look fantastic, your instruction is clear and to the point and your video editing really makes for a great tutorial. Thank You!
This is really funny I've never had any formal training and I do all three of those techniques I just kind of develop them on my own. Apparently other people do them too LOL
Im excited my welds are actually looking like welds now. Im gonna practice a few more days before trying my project

Hahaha if you knew ANYTHING about welding you'd know these are garbage welds.

Best quick video on welding for beginners ive seen
Thanks! One of the best vids on how to improve welds.
Great video, simple and straight to the point, I'm a welder on production equipment repair shop we match welding of the equipment we repair, but sometimes we have to make new equipment and we got to use some of these techniques on structural .
tip #4 be sure the nossle is clean of spatter for maximum gas coverage.
Those 3 methods are tried and true. I've been using them for years. Good video. Short and informative.

" It's like drawing. " I like that.
I just subscribed because you knew what you were talking about and you showed me. Nice job on all three techniques.
Great work, keep them circles tighter if possible. Aside from that that my friend is a gorgeous weld. Very consistent. Keep up the good work brother regardless it ain't breaking √
tighter by moving the puddle less? Slower? Faster? Please explain..TIA
Thank you brother for the advice and knowledge you’re passing on here. I will definitely benefit from it. You explain everything in easy to understand terms the way everyone should. Thanks again
Some of the cleanest MIG welds I've seen on UA-cam. Would you mind sharing the Voltage & Wire Feed Settings used for these welds?
Experiment man
Great to see a tips video from another left-handed welder. Also nice to know I can push or pull (at least w/ steel) depending on conditions and be okay.
I used to get hollered at for welding this way in production. I didn't care I just wanted to make beautiful welds. Good job buddy 👋.
I start welding hopefully this week (currently doing oxy torch cuts rn) and I'm liking how you explain on making this beads!
I appreciate your expertise. Keep it up dude.
Man, I'm just learning welding and this video gets me pumped!
Straight to the point and great explanation 💯
Dam good Bro! Keep it simple for dummies like me! Been laying quarters (LOL) a long time, your method helped a lot! TY
