Just got a copy of this and I attempted to read the rule book late at night and my head exploded. This video will come very much in handy. Thank you, sir!
The first time I looked at it my head exploded too. Glad my series can help. Also, for home head exploding material, check out the living rules to see all the changes docs.google.com/document/d/1k8_ya9OkaaFF1MteOpTF349yHz-m_uRpiVVBZVMrgXA/edit
This is a really helpful video and I actually understand the game better than any of the other videos I've seen, and definitely better than the rule book 😆 Can't wait to watch the next one and maybe start playing!
Tried to figure this game out with my wife, but was quickly overwhelmed by the rule book. This has been extremely helpful, and I look forward to giving it a second go!
Update from the living rules, it’s not just the owner of the organism that gets the effects of being able to place more bionts in refugia due to green chromosomes, it’s any player with a biont on that organism just like with access to abilities like HGT.
Hi - been watching your videos (from the UK) for a couple of years now. Really helpful, thank you. I finally managed to get a copy of this hard to get hold of game and I'll be using this series of videos alot! Good job GBG.
Thank you GBG, you single-handedly sold me on this game. I've been a bit nervous about the complexity, but now I see that it's mostly terminology on an otherwise amazingly tense game. Talk about cosmic horror! Elder Sign, my a$$. :B
@@GrayBoardGamer No, seriously, you single-handedly (the other hand was Ricky Royal's Pax Porfiriana series) started me on my Phil Eklund trip, which is still going on today. And now, five years later, I come back here to recall the rules. Thanks!
At around 50 min. you say that any effects that come into play with a newly-added mutation don't come into effect until the next round. That is ONLY applies to the Fission ability. All other abilities come into effect immediately after their purchase.
Really nice video. I don't think I could get through that whopper of a manual all by myself. At 11:58 you state "red player will go first and then play order will go clockwise around the game board.", but the rules in section A2 play order state, that the three dots on every event card indicate player order. Just by coincidence it is the same in your first round. At 34:20, you moved over the existing refugium "Green Rust Fumarole" when it states in section D3 - setup: "Place all new Refugia as the new rightmost Refugia in the rows they came from." I don't know yet, if the sequence of refugia has an impact on gameplay, but as far as I have read the rules EVERYTHING has an impact in this game. Keep up the good work! Thanks a lot!
Yeah, this is a tough one to get right in every instance. Also, when I was filming the rules were in the process of changing. Before each filming session, I had to look online at the "living rules" that were being edited almost daily by the creator. This was definitely the hardest playthrough series I have done. Thanks for pointing out the things I missed :-)
Fantastic video, after reading trhough the rules and recreating the 2-player example this is perfect to better grasp the flow of the game. Next step, starting my first solitaire runthrough. Great explanations and nice editing, you definetely got a new subscriber!
I'm glad you're giving the solitaire version a go! I'm glad my videos helped. Thank you for watching and subscribing (FYI: I just hit 100 subscribers so I think you were number 100 :-)
Thank you for the clear and well presented video, this will be such a great help before I disappear into the rulebook (on the games expected soon arrival). The components and the play cards etc are all so clear, what a great looking game. It may have taken 400 mill years but great to see more things happening in turn 3.
BTW great job on tackling this beast of a game. I've grappled with quite challenging games before, but this one is on another level. There is absolutely no way I'd have been able to crack that rule book on my own. I really want to get this game, but it's no where to be found at the moment.
Thanks! This was so far the hardest rule set I've attempted to learn and film. It does look like it is all sold out but I got mine as a pre-order on the Sierra Madre Games website, this may be your best option but keep an eye on the BGG marketplace and eBay too.
Yeah, This happened to me last year when I tried to get Robinson Crusoe: Adventures On The Cursed Island. I missed an opportunity to buy it and had to wait 2-3 months between restocking periods before I got a copy. Looks like I'm in for a similar endeavor here. Oh well. At least now I'll have time to learn the rule book first!
Yes, any prior knowledge of the rules is of great benefit to playing this game but be sure to check the living rules before you play to make sure you are current with all of the changes and addendums.
I was also think on that and to write like why double 5 was not count in the game like doble 4. But maybe because 5 is cause a negative effects. Can you explain me why?
Oh i think I know now, I just check the rule book. When he in the video roll double 5 it cause that all his Bionts was dead, so to be able to create a Microorganism you need to have Biont remains on the Refugium after applying the results.
Great overview! I watch this months ago and decided to back the 2nd Edition Kickstarter. Just got the game in the mail and decided to watch this again before reading the rules. Thank you!
Thanks for great playthrought (still watching), I wonder what are differences between your version and 2nd edition (I have two books you have one), because gameplay looks like the one I tried
Hi! Thanks for this very useful and thorough playthrough. One question: at 32:50, you state that you have no organism. But your autocatalytic roll was 3:4:5:5... Couldn't you have created darwinian life because of the double 5 (section F3 of the rules, p.24)?
Yes, I could of created life there but I chose not to because I didn't have any organized manna to take with me; I didn't want an organism with just 2 bionts in it.
Just in case you are still paying attention to this, I know it's been a few years. Great job on this! Much appreciated. Question for you ... my setup instructions say to put 3 Refugia cards in the Cosmic and Ocean Landform decks and 5 cards in each of Coastal and Continent. You only have 2 for Cosmic and Ocean. Am I missing something? Thanks

Seriously good walkthrough of a very opaque ruleset. many thanks.

Excellent video! I'm looking forward to picking up this game, it looks awesome.
Thanks for doing these tutorials, you're a life saver! Now I can finally play this mind bending game.

Thank you!

This is great! This game does not get nearly enough attention.

In round 2 during the Autocatalytic Roll you rolled a double 5, so the Progenote player could have created a Microorganism....
I was also think on that and to write like why double 5 was not count in the game like doble 4. But maybe because 5 is cause a negative effects. Can you explain me why?

No, thank you. I've now played the game once with two other playera, and then once solitaire. It's one heck of an interesting experience.

Thanks for this! I am trying to understand the rulebook and having to learn from the pdf and googledocs is driving me up the wall.
Glad it was helpful!

I added an annotation to the video to reflect this, thanks again.

No need to respond, you answered my question at the beginning of part 5.
A bit slow but damn helpful video! My biggest problem is the overwhelming info with macroorganisms
People tend to watch this series at 1.5 or double speed :-)
I am so glad it’s slow. It really helps me absorb the rules.
@@GrayBoardGamer Oh yeah, that is a thing that can be done. XD Regardless, I watched it something like twice. Thanks for this.
I love this game, but the components and cards are utter hell for a red-green colourblind person.
Is it a solo play ?
Yes, it can be played solo 😊
