I have been a nurse since 1974 and have seen what asbestos can do to a person's lungs.

As much as I hate to admit, asbestos cement siding really does stand the test of time...many homes in the town I grew up in built in the 1950s-60s still have this original siding. With special precautions during installation and being careful not to damage it it really is a winner of a siding, not like the vinyl crap today that brittles over time, cracks with hail or a weed whacker and melts in the sun.

All those buildings truthfully probably should be knocked down but cost to much I think the lead and asbestos thing runs super deep I think anyone who has ever even been in neighborhood of house fire is low-key screwed can't imagine how fucked actual fire fighters are but just anyone who has ever been in neighborhood during fire is fucked

I like to collect whacky old products like radium medicine and I recently got my hands on a box of Kent cigarettes from the mid 1950's. They had filters made from the nastiest version of asbestos called crocidolite. It's absolutely insane to find out in hindsight that many of these companies were very aware of what they were doing but didn't care because they made a lot of money.

And back then if you said anything about asbestos being hazardous to your health, you would have been called a "conspiracy theorist" or crazy person, much like how people today are called when they criticize "energy efficient" light bulbs and other new inventions.

Look it up. The US is the number one buyer of asbestos still in 2023. We buy and use all we can get from Russia. We banned it for one year in the 1980s. Sad.

Asbestos is only dangerous if you're breathing it in. Unless you're breaking your house shingles with a hammer and huffing the dust they're not harming anything. The only consideration would be home renovations, respirators would be needed. That's about it.

And today what is the number one country buying all the metric tons of the stuff they can get from Russia? Over 80 countries have banned it. The US banned it for one year and now the number one buyer and user of the stuff today. I thought it was a joke when I saw it on Good Morning America and then I learned its used in car parts, roofing tiles, and other things that allow us to breathe it in when it gets mobile. (I have an old ad that says in the year 2000 Studebakers will still be made under this original asbestos roof.)

I’m sure they were just trying to create a new product that was cheap and easily available as well as easy to install. Really it’s no different than oil companies, food companies or really any other industry that tried to solve a problem while making a profit. I’m sure one day people will scoff at the early 2000’s for our use of products. Btw I’m positive that was lead paint he was smearing on it too
