Growling is sometimes used to accomodate the higher belts when you know your voice is not fully there for a performance. Often when sick or tired, female singers who can growl, try to growl their way through the belting. When done right, growling also helps clear the throat. So if Morissette was sick and tired in this performance, it’s understandable why she would growl so much.
