Create Dreamy Photography with a MACRO Lens | Tips & Tricks

  • I like to keep things simple: find a pleasing subject, have a basic starting point with settings and adjust according to the light, then compose the image creating soft dreamlike photographs with a sharp center of interest.
Most of the time, my favorite way to take a photo with my macro lens or any lens is to hand-hold (no tripod), no flash, and with wide-open apertures. No focus stacking and hopefully not too much editing afterward. I don’t have a problem with any of those things. In fact, I admire what many other photographers do and I enjoy viewing beautiful photographs in all styles of photography, it’s just that this is my comfort zone and while it’s good to sometimes push yourself to try different things, I just love to go outside and enjoy nature, this makes me feel at peace and I’m happy to find subjects to photograph without a lot of fuss and with nothing holding me back.
I’m always experimenting, so sometimes my settings can be all over the place, I’m still learning and discovering what works best in different lighting conditions.
In this video, I share several tips and a couple of hacks for creating creamy soft photographs with a macro lens. Most of these examples are close-ups and not necessarily macro photography, but for me, this lens isn’t just for macro photography, it is sort of an ‘all-purpose lens’ and sometimes getting really close to a subject is a bonus!
You can create a similar look to your photos with just about any camera and lens if the lens can go somewhere between f/1.2 - f/4 or a telephoto lens at around f/5.6, together with some of these other tips. *

You took one “subject” (a flowering Magnolia tree) and created many satisfying images. And “shooting throw” plastic bags was a bonus! I found this video gently inspiring. Thank you Liesl.

I hope you can enjoy the new video out today as well, I know I use a tele-lens in that one but it is not much different from the macro lens. And I hope you have a great time out there with your camera!

You brought not only very different techniques, but art to your teachings which I was craving but unable to find with other photographers. You made my evening so I drifted off to sleep with lovely, soft, floaty images following me into my dreamtime. Thank you so much. I will continue to watch more of your amazing work.

You are so right, you can enjoy every camera and every lens. Yes, it is a shame that Olloclip does not make lenses for mobile phones anymore, but there are others out there, they can be a bit tricky to use though, so it is not a good idea to get a cheap one. Take care and I hope to see you around again in the comments :)

Such a good Video. 👌🏻Last time I always thought a „good“ photo work only with Photoshop or lightroom or such things. And I was a little bit frustrated of this, because I only try to photograph what I see at this moment. And I am so happy to find your video, because you show me, a good photo is possible with time and ideas. Thank you for these tips. I will try it.👌🏻🤗

So true. You just have to slow down and observe what you are looking at for a while before framing your shot, making sure the background looks good as well as the main subject, slow down and try different angles. I hope you have success and enjoy experimenting! Thanks, Jeanette!

Very nice Liesl! I have a magnolia in bloom in my back garden and you have inspired me to try to get a few shots. With our early spring out here in California, it's on it's last legs as far as blossoms, but I'll see what I can find. Cheers, Jeff

Thank you, Jeff! I hope you manage to get some photos before the blooms fade. I saw some lovely white magnolia blooms this morning, but they were also on their way out.
