That's awesome if it's true. I think for part 2 of season 2 most eps were 29 mins long and aired with no ad breaks. But for part 1 of season 2 I notice this episode is one of the few that are 29 mins so they would could have treated it special like that.

We may talk that S2 had technical difficulties and bad animation (Mostly for part 1), but we have to be grateful for the love that the staff puts on Re Zero, they could have gone for money and no regard for the show, which they didn't.

Edit: This comment ended up being super long, this episode just gets to me lol. The TLDR is I relate to Subaru more than any other male anime character - This episode (and a few others from season 2) are what made me love and relate to Subaru. My dad is very successful. He was the captain of most sports teams growing up, went to university, started his own successful company, married my mom (captain of the cheerleading team), etc. Whenever we went to family gatherings that had friends and family they always told me I look just like my dad and told me how amazing my dad is and how he got all the girls growing up. They'd tell me how he was the toughest in school, as he was also captain of the wrestling team. I always felt like I had enormous shoes to fill to become as cool as successful as my dad. My mom on the other hand was always very open-minded and still is. She always supported my nerdy interests and was very involved in my life. My moms a bit different to say the least. What started as a prank and turned into a running joke is she always buys me and my 2 brothers something each year for Christmas with her face printed on it. The first year it was a coffee mug, then socks, and most recently a blanket. She doesn't seriously expect us to use them, it's just a joke like "don't forget about me now that you're growing up and all moved out." I still feel like most of my open-minded personality comes from my mom, but my competitiveness comes from my dad. It's like I'm 50% my dad and 50% my mom, so I relate to Subaru as both of his parents remind me of mine, and his childhood reminds me of mine. I was the class clown who was always good at everything and just getting by, but I never felt like I was as great as my dad. I didn't play this role for attention, I just genuinely liked making people smile and felt like it's what I was best at, my parents gave me loads of love and attention. By the time I got to high school I hated being the class clown, I'd walk into class and people would be immediately excited I was there and expect me to do something hilarious. I became really unmotivated in high school and stopped going to classes altogether until I got expelled for my attendance. It wasn't until I grew up (a lot) that I found myself and straightened my life out, eventually going back to school then college. Turns out I just want a nice cozy job working from home where I can be an introvert, and that's what I am currently doing and loving my life! I just want to occasionally hang out with friends, watch anime, and relax at home. This only really scratches the surface, the point is I can relate a lot to Subaru lol. I honestly found Subaru to be a bit annoying in season 1, like many others, even though I did STRONGLY empathize with his situation. Now he's one of my favorite male MCs in anime.

What I love about my job is that I work from the comfort of my own home. I can sleep in, work in my sweat pants, watch anime of breaks, make whatever I want for lunch, etc. Most importantly though is I have two desks in my office, one for work and one for my personal computer. I work with a wireless headset and for long boring calls I can literally sit at my personal computer browsing the internet. I also surrounded my office with anime wallscrolls, figures in detolfs, and that's where my bookshelf is for manga and light novels. I work surrounded by what I love, save money by cancelling my car insurance and selling my car, and literally spent $4000 on anime merch this year LOL. Rewatching Season 1 after learning Subaru's past makes a lot of his early actions make sense. Like how infatuated he was by Emilia's kindness, why he expected to be "special" after getting transported to another word. Or how outwardly over the top he is in presenting himself. And brings context to his despair in episode 18 in his self-doubt.
A lot of lines suddenly hold a lot more meaning when you see where Subaru came from and why he acts the way he does.
It's too bad you guys don't understand the isekai tropes Re;Zero is trying to deconstruct. In most isekais the MC just transports to the world and doesn't question it as a wish fulfillment for the audience. In Re;Zero they follow these tropes but show that to just accept going to another world so willingly a person has to be pretty damaged and unfulfilled in the real world to just accept a new life somewhere else.

This was my friends and my favorite episode. Its so relatable, slowly declining in rank when you used to be the best without trying makes you feel worthless. So you break out and do stupid stuff just to be noticed. And its conceited and just another self imposed pressure put on you, but its what you do. But we teared up when Subaru's mom said her consoling words, because we realized thats truly how parents feel, and they were the words we both needed to here. Don't try to be who you are expected to be, just do your best to be your best you.

  • @Aidoneus87
    @Aidoneus87 3 роки тому +69

I respectfully disagree with the idea that Subaru’s parents should have forced him to go to school, the main reason being that depression (which it’s clear to me that he was suffering from) is an illness, and should be treated as one. You wouldn’t send your kid to school with a debilitating case of the flu, and school was also seemingly part of the reason Subaru withdrew himself.
In my opinion the best thing you can do for a friend or a loved one is be there for them (as his parents were) and encourage them to get the help they need and support them in getting better, which is exactly what they did.
Not to mention that the social pressures placed on kids in Japan is astronomical compared to what we deal with in the west. There’s a reason that phenomena like NEET and hikikomori are so widespread as people (like Subaru) feel like they’re being crushed under social pressures. They simply choose to run away from those pressures completely, and, honestly, in my opinion, that’s fair.
If that were my kid I’d happily let them stay home and take the time they need to recover from whatever crap was bothering them, while encouraging them to go back to school, and see a therapist or a counsellor about what’s troubling them.
I don’t mean to start a fight here, but I have many friends who struggle with mental illness, and I’ve learned from experience that the forceful method causes even more problems, since it puts their loved ones in an antagonising role and places even more pressure on them. There’s a real risk of them withdrawing further, and making their issues even deeper.

I’m sorry to hear that. If you’d like some unsolicited advice from an internet stranger, definitely try and find a trusted adult (I’m assuming you’re still in school) who you can trust to talk to about what’s bugging you, like maybe a school counsellor or a teacher or a more open-minded relative. The best thing to do is find a support network you can rely on and when you start to feel better you can decide if it’s worth putting energy in to try and convince him.
I hope this helps even a little.

Yes, Subaru's parents are amazing, but it is heartbreaking that they don't get any closure on their son like Subaru just had. Here's the author's comments on this episode:
Q: Now that their eldest son Subaru has been summoned to another world, what’s the situation in the Natsuki household? They seem like a couple that it wouldn’t be too surprising if they chased after him to the other world.
A: They’re enduring the disappearance of their eldest son somehow or other. The police investigation has no leads, and Kenichi is trying to comfort Naoko but it’s not that effective. They’re passing each day tearfully.

Subaru's case extremely hit close to home, especially in Asian culture and family. The author intentionally written Subaru story as a way to remind and motivate not just teenagers, but adult people who are depressed, suicidal and unable to think for themselves especially in a harsh society like in Japan where honors and going to good school as well as working in big name company is everything.
The way Subaru broke is becuz he was unable to connect with people and cannot deal with societal pressure put on him to the point that he isolated himself from others due to anxiety and insecurity along with not getting the help he need.
ReZero is about emotions and character study, this might not be interesting for some people but well pls pay attention to the dialogues pls. I'm kinda surprised that you guys are still lost despite watching dub.

And when they return home they express "I've come home" and the person at home expresses their joy and welcoming of the one that just returned.
Subaru's mom saying her part and Subaru not doing his is heartbreaking, specially to him, because he realized how cold and ungrateful he was, and what is worse he won't ever be able to make it right.

Again, he won't be able to do that, he is no longer there, and in a sense they aren't either. Yeah, it's really hit or miss with people. I know MANY people put this season up there and said it rivals aot s4, which I agree with. If this show connects with you the right way it's genuine art. If you can't really find its magic, or it's just genuinely not for you, perfectly makes sense.

I feel like you guys aren't interested in this show, so I know you won't read this but my personal list of shows you could watch (that I think you would enjoy) as a replacement (in descending order):
Psycho-Pass (A tier Psychological Detective Drama that just barely lost its S tier spot)
Code Geass (B tier Mecha/Revenge story about a prince and his witch - beware the first season has 3? scenes with 'nudity')
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex + 2nd Gig (Low A tier cyberpunk detective series with philosophical undertones)
Claymore (High B tier philosophical fantasy action story about a boy and his demon that only gets B tier because of the shite ending)
Rising of the Shield Hero (Low B tier kinda campy Isekai that makes you want to kill the antagonist of the first arc with your bare hands. But first arc is best arc)
Show you would enjoy but might be too risque (in descending order):
Castlevania (S tier high packed-action vampire show based on the game series of the same name)
Mushoku Tensei (High A tier Isekai that has almost none of the problems of modern Isekais and is animated beautifully)
Konosuba (Low A tier Isekai Comedy that makes fun of Isekais and video games generally)
Darling in the Franxx (A tier first arch mecha show - though you might enjoy the second arc - about two birds that each have one wing)
Shows you probably won't Enjoy - though not necessarily bad series (not in any order):
Neon Genesis Evangelion (Depressing all the way through, has no fulfilling resolution, forgets its narrative arc halfway, also masturbation)
Ergo Proxy (Great psychological/philosophical? drama that begins well but fails to fulfill on its themes and has terrible pacing - though several episodes are masterworks)
Spice and Wolf (Absolute S tier economics anime about a flowering romance between a wolf and her boy, sadly lacks proper resolution)
Elfen Lied (Low B tier nudity-filled psychological drama about love and hate and gore)

Short answer is Sean Chiplock is as good as Kobayashi, Ram has a more nuanced performance emotionally, Betelgeuse (specifically Geuse) doesn't sound over-the-top hammy, and - most importantly - the dialogue for the most part has sooooooo much more character. Trust me on this one as someone who saw this show both languages multiple times in showing it to people - the dialogue is just more rich in personality when you compare individual lines of dialogue.

I love him as rean schwarzer too in trails of cold steel, but re:zero is definitely the better performed, more demanding role.
