They are widely recognised as the most exciting young string quartet of the present moment, bringing new insights to contemporary composition and core classical repertoire. In parallel, they have also made surprising and impressive forays into the world of Nordic folk music. Their 2014 album Wood Works (Dacapo Records) was a left-field hit, and audiences around the world have been delighted by concert performances of the music. Now the Danish String Quartet bring their folk project to ECM with a stirring new recording. Last Leaf took its initial inspiration from an unusual Christmas hymn, “Now found is the fairest of roses”, published in 1732 by Danish theologian and poet H.A. Brorson. The hymn is set to a mysterious, dark melody: Brorson had chosen an old Lutheran funeral choral to accompany his Christmas hymn, elegantly showing how life and death are always connected. “From here we embark on a travel through the rich fauna of Nordic folk melodies until returning to Brorson in the end,” say the DSQ. “It is a journey that could have been made in many different ways, but we believe that we returned with some nice souvenirs. In these old melodies, we find immense beauty and depth, and we can't help but sing them through the medium of our string quartet. Brorson found the fairest of roses, we found a bunch of amazing tunes - and we hope you will enjoy what we did to them.”

I'm a sophomore, violist, these guys just came to my high school in Washington. I got to skip 3rd period to see them, and man, I was melting in my seat. They literally took my breath away. I think my friend and I were the first to stand after this song for a standing ovation. Love their accents, love their music. My orchestra director asked us to fill out surveys afterwards asking about how we liked it. My review: Just YES.
I think I went to the same event, union?
valpriz Yeah, that's the one.
Very jealous
I keep coming back to this video. This makes me miss playing with people, since I'm a violist and haven't played with anyone since COVID-19 started. I hope one day I can play this with my friends. :')
Check out their tiny desk concert. It's great!
My friend sent it to me.
She has a group that gets together to play music (instruments).
Height of Covid, decided to go see a string quartet play by candlelight in the Masonic Temple in downtown Detroit. Probably 60 people total in a beautiful building, spaced out, and all focused on the quartet playing in the center of the room. To finish the night as an encore, they played this. To this day, I have been chasing the incredible high those 4 minutes gave me.
The first time I heard these guys was yearrrssss ago on NPR news and I was scrambling all over the internet trying to find them and I did! I was maybe 16 then. I'm 23 now and using their music in my wedding (: I have been impacted by their talent THAT much and I am grateful
these guys are my favorite, everything they do sparkles.
The pizz. section never fails to make me smile, it’s just the perfect timbre to sum this song up
I wish this piece was longer, it is very good.
I can not listen to this music without dancing !!
Oh! What does it do with my heart and soul...
agree ! Isn't this wonderful.
Five people have no soul.
+Andrew Casson hahahaha
Truly, DSQ is of virtuoso caliber. Their seminal work "Last Leaf" is a gift and very well a defining modern masterpiece to string music. Aficionados of this exceptional quartet will celebrate their musical legacy for years to come!
NPR brought me here and I'm so glad they did! There are no words for how beautiful it is!
Exactly!
Same here!
Me too, yet another wonderful discovery thanks to them...!
Word
heard this yesterday and it is simply wonderful- I cannot believe they have 4 thumbs down? why?
I'm truly, madly, deeply in love with this (master)piece. Been on repeat for quite some time now...
I love how they put their backs into their bowing...yet keep it precise!
We've come too far
To give up who we are
So let's raise the bar
And our cups to the stars
What a fantastic sound they have as an ensemble!
This is probably my favorite piece of all time!
Magnifique ! j'ai découvert cette musique lors d'un concert, et je l'écoute en boucle depuis au moins 3 ans .. elle m'accompagne à travers le temps .. merveille !
This entire album is so amazing! Listening to it on repeat.
They are wonderful musicians!
Charming lads playing charming music , this is perfection
Listening on repeat, and wishing there were a way to listen more.
Their Beethoven has just changed my life and I love this too.
Discovered the quartet in a trans-pacific Delta flight last month. Upon returning home, I purchased the album from iTunes, and now I’m completely hooked on it! I can’t quite pinpoint but there’s something common between Danish and Japanese traditional tunes. I can hear in Tjønneblomen, for example, what they call “kobushi” in Japanese. I love how the traditional tunes are rendered in modern harmonic scheme. Every track in this album has something that touches me so deeply. Thank you for the wonderful and amazing experience.
To me, it resembles Irish folk more than anything else, but with the same modern harmonies you mentioned.
Love it! Check out Rune's other group "Dreamers' Circus." Amazing folk stuff that I've fallen in love with as well ...
The similarities you're likely hearing are the pentatonic pitch collections that are common in the folk music of a lot of cultures. If I remember correctly, almost all cultures that used pitches (rather than rhythmic drums, etc...) also made heavy use of the pentatonic scales.
There is an amazing YT of DSQ playing w/Dreamers Circus
@@hyperspice-musicandotherju1209 Irish absolutely. I don't see any "Japanese" connection to this music.
not enough people are into this music
Did you count how many people are? But ... how?!
How many are listening? How many should be listening? And why do you think more folks should be listening?
This is factually correct because EVERYONE should be into this music
So much music, so little time.
I'm not exactly into this genre of music, but I'm studying to understand its language. In the meanwhile, be sure you touched my soul, guys. Go on!
If you like it, don't "study" to "get into" it! Just keep ****ing liking it!
Fantastic and inspiring!
That was amazing. Thank you for such an incredible performance.
This music just makes me happy. Thank you.
Magnifique
Just loving this so much
Sublime....
That ending. Wow!
Total Inspirational. I am arranging for strings to play with my Family Band. If only I had heard this before!!! Now that is great arranging!!! Fabulous!!
Beautiful
This album makes my cells sing! Thank you from my Nordic Genes!
me too- my great grandparents were from Norway . :)
Just wonderful, I love it
Someone said that song was meant for me, what does that mean. Im in tears
3:17...
I’m sorry, I was looking for an emoji to express it but I can’t find one. There just simple isn’t one that does the feeling justice.
Why am I crying
because you are a baby
These guys are something else!
I love it!
I hate that my mind can hear the melody from, "Get Lucky" by Pharrell in this absolutely transporting, mystical piece. oiiii. pop radio is infecting my brain. Love this track!
Don't hate your mind! It's the same harmonies, harmonic progression, even the tempo is very close. I'd say; "well heard". Mash-up potential, absolutely. Is that a sin? No, it just goes to show that folk music is folk music, in whatever guise or form. That's why we all love folk music, it speaks to us at so many levels, but aims for the heart:-)
Zooanzoo when i heard this i thought it sounded very familiar but couldn’t think of what it was. it’s been bugging me all night so it’s hank you for putting me out of my misery!
amazing
How can a human being dislike this?
Maybe they were waiting for the music for it and got annoyed... or maybe they're just 5th grade strings teachers who think all right techniques are wrong...
WOW!
Fantastic playing! Great quartet.
brilliant
Grandes guys! Like always!
Tak!
amazing, and brilliant idea!
Only one word - wow!
Extraordinario, sin más. Gracias
Love! Just heard this on BBC 3 & looked you up. I thought it was Irish! Fabulous
Incredible!
Excellent!!!
beautifull
Wonderful!
Sounds awesome!!!
OMG after nearly a year you finally released it MANGE TAK
wonderfull!
Earned a sub from me. Makes this Dane proud. So good.
Am I the only one hearing Get Lucky from the Daft Punk? At several moments, and especially from 2:40 to the end.
Me too! I couldn’t shake that song out of my head when hearing that part.
wonderful, thank you so much! Solange
Ooo så vackert. Jag blir på bra humör😃
So coool guys
Damn....this is good
I wish this song was longer
❤
Plz publish the score as soon as possible! Can’t wait
We will soon, hopefully by the end of this month! (Nov. 18)
Sheet music is ready now! www.danishquartetshop.com
The sheer energy of the 1st V is enough to discover the geographic north pole. But I wish the cello put more shoulder into his oar.
Holy shit.
Hello, great video! What is the camera used to shoot?
This song reminds me hardly of EDM. I can recognize a nice rise and I would not be surprised if this melody was uploaded on NCS XD
Wow, love this piece!!! Is there any sheet music available?
Sheet music will be available at the beginning of 2018!
Hi! I fell in love with this one! Where the sheet music will be available? I need to learn this, thank you so much for this joy!
Does anyone know where I can but the notes to this? I want to play this for my family when I come home for Christmas.
Christmas is over, but you can find the sheet music here: www.danishquartetshop.com. Hope you will enjoy! /DSQ
My teacher showed this in class
Did the cellist tune his c string down for the low b and f-sharp at the end, or was it just the missing fundamental effect? Also, when is the sheet music going to be available? Itching to play this.
I'm wondering the same thing! On the recording you can definitely hear those notes that obviously are below the cello's normal compass. I wonder if they slipped in a string-bass track ....
Sheet music will be available by the end of this month at danishquartetshop.com! And yes, on the recording Fredrik dubbed a bass part in the end :-)
Guys, are there scores of it?
did they just put a drop in folk
Get lucky
Everybody else is commenting "fancily" about how this song is good; and although I agree, I think this song's drop- one of the best ones I've heard- makes it perfect for not only classical music fans, but EDM fans. I for one, am both.
なんとも楽しい!狂気している
One word: TERRIFIC.
i see you :D
ha! Discovered this one 2 months ago and it's still being played in bus, everytime!
なんとも楽しい!狂気している。
