Both this song and their other big hit bring me to life were songs I always wanted to sing when I was upset because they are vocally challenging unlike most pop songs. When I'm anxious or angry or frustrated and I feel like I'm coming out of my body I've found singing to be a way to pay attention to the things in my body that I can control (breath, mouth shape, posture etc.) And it gets me out of my head and back into my body and my regular personality. These two songs and I dreamt I dwelt in marble halls by Anuna and she used to be mine from waitress are the four songs I'm most likely to sing when I'm upset.

You are absolutely spot on that the song is a rollercoaster.......... a rollercoaster of emotions throughout the song. Amy has that voice that captivates you from the beginning note. Perfect placement of when the full band comes into the song and then falls back out and finishes off with that beautiful piano. If you notice in the video Amy never touches the ground, that is to resemble her as a spirit. In Amy's case, a perfect angel! ⛲😁

The Kansas/Arkansas thing has an explanation. Too bad the answer won't get to the person who was so upset. The territory, before it became a state, was known as both Arkansas (like Kansas) and Arkansaw. When they ratified statehood, they needed to choose one. The legislature decided to use the spelling of one and the pronunciation of the other.

Evanescence is one of those bands where you should always just go for a live performance. All the instrumentalists are so damn consistent, good musicians doesn't even start to describe them. Then there's Amy's voice, the only thing more beautiful than her eyes...
There is really good footage of the band doing this song in a massive venue, where Amy plays the piano under her phenomenal singing. Imho, that performance is better than the album recording...

I love it when she turns around to the band with a big grin.
