in Poland we have a simple solution for the names of all these; we call all of them 'słoń' which translates to elephant which is the nickname of those gas masks xD
Awesome video, thanks for all the information! Speaking of the black GP-5 with the coffee can filter, I've bought one a few years ago and the filter appears to be marked XI-90-15 BKF. It's slightly shorter than the EO-16 and has the same colour as the GP-5 one.
Going to play the guessing game here, before I watch the video, I'm assuming it's the center one due. The two on the left appear to be a different colour to the traditional GP-5s, the second from the far right has ear holes and the one on the far right has straps and looks too big. EDIT: Midway through the video, I realized that I should have looked at the colouration of the filter area. Oops. EDIT, AGAIN: Oops. Got it wrong. One mask to the left. I also didn't see the voice diaphragm, because It's 12:34 AM and my brain is mush.
i bought a "GP-5" and only after i realised that the metal parts arround the eye pieces are diferently colored and the exhale valve is slightly diferent and i was wonderering if it wasent actually a GP-5 but some clone,it also has a pretty wierd smell,so i refreing form putting it on,the metal pieces are kinda bronze colored, does anyone know what it is?
Did you know there exist and Shm41 that was remade as an Rocket Refuiling mask like the PRVU( black ShMs with diffrent voice diaframe and some weird paper around the hose)
“Shlem Maska” isn’t too hard to pronounce. Fronty sh, unrounded-normal l-y sound because of front vowel-em normal em sound-ah like in “lava” or Queen’s English pronunciation of “bath”, or indeed “mask”-normal sk- soft uh like in end of “lava” or “mother” in most England-English dialects. So “Shl-yem Maaskuh” or say forget the weird “sh-l-y “ consonant cluster and just say “Shlem Maaskuh” and it’s pretty much there.
It's just the GP-5M has gotten dirty/discoloured over time, that GP-5 was from Amazon with it's original bag and filter, the GP-5M was in a set of a black and white mask but quite dirty when I got them.
I recently purchased a gp-5 mask, but I couldn't find a cheap NATO one, or find a prop filter. so I ended up taking a dog food can over both the nozzles, and it looks fine. kinda smells like dog food when I breathe through it though.
I have two gp5 filters one is dented and beat up while the other is appearing to be in great condition. If I needed to breath in the a filter should the dented one be fine and can still use it or get rid of it. Btw will a coffee can fit on a gp5
I got a surplus gas mask and was told it was a gp5 but the end is green and resembles the shm1 I’m guessing it’s an shm1? Also what year would it be around?
The “shm-41” is a Bulgarian copy of the shm-41 the valve house is the biggest give away the soviet ones have ab brown valve houseing similar to the ShMS Bulgarian ones have a plain green one
Yes totally safe assuming it doesn't contain asbestos, however if the last particulate layer rips you can inhale charcoal dust etc. So as long as it's an expired NATO filter in good condition, it is safe to use even if it no longer offer any protective capabilities.
Hi W&S93, a quick question. If kept in a hermetically sealed state, out of sunlight, how long would the rubber of the mask last? Did the Soviets have an expected lifespan? I'm only asking as I've noticed some rubber helmet liners that someone gave me that had been in storage since the 80s, had started to go to a weird gel-like state. anyway Thanks for uploading.
hands-on-eyes-on the life span of a soviet is baby teenager work slave then gulag this has been a comprehensive veiw on the life span of a lower class soviet citezen
In theory in those conditions it would last forever, all of my Soviet masks work fine to my knowledge, just don't leave them in the sunlight. I've heard Yugoslav M1 masks tend to melt over time due to rubber issues but not Soviet masks.
The MSA MCU and Millenium masks have a single panoramic lens, the Avon M50 that America has put into service (made by Avon though) has a panoramic lens as well.
There isn't an East German GP-5 to my knowledge, as they simply imported Soviet masks, I did see a GP-5 with a Drager stamp on the rubber, so maybe that was looted equipment?
Poor Gp5 is having an identity crisis
GP-5 is not so special now.
Weaponsandstuff93 RIP gp5

Yes but mostly we call the OM-14 and MUA elephant
Well what a twist my “GP-5” turns out to be an SHM-41
Well you got the more valuable at least
Mine too except the metal is the same color as the gp-5

BKF were industrial filters I believe but the GP-5 with hoses and the coffee can were also smaller coffee cans than the EO-16 filters.
GP5 was just the name for the civilian gas mask kit, the facepiece is the ShM-62u
I think this is the most concise GP-5/ShM41 video on UA-cam. Very informative mate. well done.
+Mr Aphoristic Glad you liked it.
Great resource Liam. I was just about to shop for a GP-5 and thought I should brush up.Thanks/Mike
Yeah it's surprising how many people list other masks as GP-5s or GP-5s as other masks.
The Hungarian 60M is licenced by the ShM-41, so it has the same looking valve housing, that may also confuse people.

Good video. It’s actually a SHM62 the kit is a GP5 but it’s a good video as GP5 is misused a lot and people should realise the correct name.
I always call it GP-5 because otherwise people will have no idea what I'm talking about.
Weaponsandstuff93 true
The gp5 also has a slightly different shaped head opening to the others, it is more curved, the others tend to be staight
That's because they cut the rubber down to make the GP-5 cheaper, it's thinner as well.

Its a gp5 i have same bronze colored metal parts araund the lenses
Welp now i have doubts about buying a GP-5 gas mask
So basically it's the same as every Kalasnyikov is an AK-47.
my gp-5 came with the coffe can filter but without the hose :(
DON'T ASSUME MY ABBREVIATION- the real gp-5 gas mask.
Great video it really helps
Glad you found it useful.
I knew the second one to the right was it because of it videos good job mate!
Glad you enjoy the videos.
Theese Black GP5s with a hose are not GP5s, but it's an ShMP, it's for industrial use.
Did you know there exist and Shm41 that was remade as an Rocket Refuiling mask like the PRVU( black ShMs with diffrent voice diaframe and some weird paper around the hose)
Yes the PRVM/SHM-70R, it's not actually a ShM-41 mask if you look closely at photos of it, it has lots of weird stuff on it.
6:27 I knew something was wrong with my gp-6, someone mistook the MUA with a GP6
I got a $30 kit with the Black GP-5, hose, and filter.
it definitely exists.
I never said it didn't.
i was just confirming it.
why do I get 2 notifications every time you respond to my stuff?
No idea.
youtube does weird stuff
Besides looking cool, why get it if the filters for them are unsafe?
Does the GP five and SHMS no the SHMS valve assembly is longer are they interchangeable can you lift up those tabs around them and change them out
I have one of those blue sachels with the shm-41 and e060
Do you know where the sachel comes from
I think its either the one on the center or the one on the left
I’m gonna ask my dad if I can get a Chernobyl liquidator uniform and a gp5
Nice video !!! Congratulations !!!! :D
Glad you liked it.
Were the Polish made masks issued outside Poland or were they made purely for Polish use?
The Polish masks were only used in Poland to my knowledge
Thanks for that. Currently looking to buy an ShM-41 and as you say it's a minefield of mislabelled items.
Rifleman Moore I own one, it's very dulled in color so its hard to tell if you didn't know.

Isn’t gp-5 referring to the kit and not the actual masks. Thusly if it doesn’t have the full kit is it a gp-5
immediately recognised the second mask as the shm-62U (gp5). also is it just the lighting or is the rubber on the gp5 greyer than on the gp5m?
It's just the GP-5M has gotten dirty/discoloured over time, that GP-5 was from Amazon with it's original bag and filter, the GP-5M was in a set of a black and white mask but quite dirty when I got them.

My canister filter (is like the one on the left) have massive oil leaks when i remove the breathing cap.. Is that dangerous?

Very strange, no idea what that is, but canister filters are not good to breath through regardless.

+samwich pendall That's a great idea, using an old can like a filter.
is there a empty filter that doesnt contain abspethos?
No you can't get empty filters, your best bet is to put a safe new filter on the mask, or seal the filter with a P3 pad.
I was wondering my GP 5 has a stamp T-83 can anyone tell me what that is it might not be a gp5 i just dont know i bought it at a yard sale
T is probably actually a factory stamp, 83 is probably 1983 production.
I have two gp5 filters one is dented and beat up while the other is appearing to be in great condition. If I needed to breath in the a filter should the dented one be fine and can still use it or get rid of it.

It's not really safe to use, Coffee can filters contain asbestos as well.

I got a surplus gas mask and was told it was a gp5 but the end is green and resembles the shm1 I’m guessing it’s an shm1? Also what year would it be around?
More likely an ShM-41, as the ShM-1 is far rarer.
Which soviet mask would you say has the best voice diaphram?
My gp5 is full of cracks. Will this affect the seal?
Unless they go all the way through the mask they will still work.
Do you have comments on the schm 41m
Before I watch the video, I'm gonna guess from left to right; ShM-41, GP-5, Polish M-41, PMK and the creepy SR-1.

Watch his post from about 4 days ago. "Guide to using eBay for buying gas masks."
Is a filter safe to use after it expires? I know it might not stop as much stuff, but will it put YOU in danger?
Yes totally safe assuming it doesn't contain asbestos, however if the last particulate layer rips you can inhale charcoal dust etc.
So as long as it's an expired NATO filter in good condition, it is safe to use even if it no longer offer any protective capabilities.

Does the Israeli military still use the m15?
Does the s10 have one of the caps on one side like the ct 12 so you can have 2 filters?
Yes.

Shawn Bilka there’s one called the mcu-2p or something like that but anyways that a Navy one. It has one visor.
The MSA MCU and Millenium masks have a single panoramic lens, the Avon M50 that America has put into service (made by Avon though) has a panoramic lens as well.
What type of hose should I get for a gp-5
A GOST 40mm, it's the only type that will fit.
I was so confused
Hi I got one question sorry to bother you with this but is a charcoal leaking filter bad?
Psycon yes
Yes inhaling charcoal will be bad for your lungs.
Well at least it's not a shitviet filter
Weaponsandstuff93 my mam said activated charcole is safe because you can eat it she so dumb
Safe to eat, not safe to inhale, especially not impregnated charcoal.
You can take activated charcoal to relieve stomach aches.
Its yellow in color if that helps
