    I could be wrong, but I think this another way of saying what you're saying: The racket head does, in fact, go down, but it does so as the torso rotates forward, thereby bringing the racket head in line with the target line. In any case, good job on this.

    Basically the service motion is very similar to throwing a ball. Imagine throwing the racquet up. You will coil up and lead with your elbow then your forearm accelerate and your wrist will snap to pronate like giving some one a high five slap.

    Thanks for your video lesson! I played a couple sets with the take back so the racket remained on the right side of my body and it seemed to work great. My racket still goes behind my back when transitioning to the forward or upward swing, but it just naturally happens rather than thinking about it, like I normally do. I tried the same take back for topspin serves, but just tossed the ball in a different location and let the rest happen naturally. It's still early tell, but I'm hoping this tip will make a long term positive impact on my serves. Thanks again.

    Thanks for the video. One thing to clarify as far as aiming goes, if you're aiming for a wide vs T serve, are you suggesting changing your stance to maintain the new target line? Or do you suggest using a flat T serve / slice Wide serve for righties on the Deuce court (reverse on the ad)?

    • @HammerItTennis
      @HammerItTennis  Рік тому +1

      Personally, (on the deuce side) I’d go with a flat serve up the T (because the net is lower) and a slice serve out-wide (so the ball moves away from the player more). If you are hitting the same flat serve (all tings being equal) than yes, you’d adjust your stance vs swinging your arm in a different direction. I still like a flat serve up the middle to the ad serve because it’s easy to get over the lower part of the net vs out-wide to their backhand. Spin serves are easier to hit over the higher parts of the net.

    I disagree. Hammer is a big guy. He does not need to bring it back to throw it far. The racket scratching the back makes sense. WHY? Throwing a ball like he does is not what most people do. I place the ball near the shoulder, bending the elbow, but if I have a racket or a fish net, the racket (from the same position) would naturally fall in a scratch my back position. Sorry, i disagree.

    Hi Daniel
    Thanks for your great videos
    One day I was serving and I focusing on flat serve with relaxed arm. Serves was exploding off my racquet with great pace and surprisingly with decent amount of topspin. I dont know why, but after 3 days I lost this serve. Now I can hit with power but there is no topspin. Where that topspin came from? I didnt focus on generating topspin

    • @HammerItTennis
      @HammerItTennis  6 років тому

      Topspin on the serve is generated by hitting the ball off it's center of gravity it an upward or forward motion. If you are not getting any topspin or any spin for that matter on your serve you are contacting the ball too flat in relation to your target line. Try angling your racquet as you hit upwards or as you snap your wrist outwards.

    Coach, for some reason i have trouble hitting pure Flat serves now that i predominantly use heavy Spin serves as i have advanced to 4.5-5.0 level over the years. I had no trouble hitting flat serves when i was beginner to intermediate. this is very strange. how do i hit flat serves ? as i find my serves more effective if i mix in the flat serve as well as heavy spin serves.

    • @HammerItTennis
      @HammerItTennis  4 роки тому +2

      To hit a flat serve you need to get your racquet to contact the ball more square with the swing path. If you are not getting your racquet square then you are moving it at an angle in relation to the swing path and that angle as it contacts the ball is putting spin on the ball. To get your flat serve going again you need to reestablish your ability to get the face of the racquet square to the swing path. ua-cam.com/video/UhbaNvLw53M/v-deo.html is a video on how to get more power but by working on these concepts it will help you square the racquet as well.

    There is a T serve from Deuce court at 5:30. The front foot is angled 45 degrees from the target line. So in order to serve Wide, we need to open up the front foot position?

    • @HammerItTennis
      @HammerItTennis  5 років тому

      Raul Tennis If you want to hit the ball to the left corner of the box, you would line your foot up to a 45 degree angle to a target line to that corner. If you are hitting a slice serve in which the ball cuts left off the target line then you will still maintain your front foot at a 45 degree angle to the “target” line, but keep in mind your initial target line will be to the right of where the ball will end up. So you need to “aim” and line up more to the right to compensate for the curvature of the ball flight. I gauge everything from my target line and launch angles not the lines of the court. If my feet line up differently then my target/launch lines have also changed.

      @@HammerItTennis Thanks for the response. I am just trying to learn to direct a flat serve T and Wide. (Of course "flat" serves will have some spin.) If I understand correctly, we can open up the front foot more for flat serves Wide. But on slice serves, we not only need to adjust the front foot but we need to shift the back foot to the right.

    • @HammerItTennis
      @HammerItTennis  5 років тому

      @@raultennis7320 When you say "open up the front foot more for flat serves wide", this is what I want to clarify. In how I teach, there would be no "opening" in relation to the target line, to go wide you just move the target line. At 5:30 you can see how I've lined my feet, body, and arms up with the cone line that is running through the "T" of the court on the deuce side. If you are hitting a "flat" serve but just to the left corner of the box, instead of the right corner, you line up the exact same way in relation to a target line aimed to the left corner. Your foot is not "opening" in relation to the target line (I do not recommend thinking about "open" and "closed" as in relation to the court. This is what gets alot of players in trouble with being on plane.) but rather you maintain that same setup but just have a different target line. Keeping your feet, body, and arms all lined up and moving the same in relation to your specific target line is what helps make your shots more accurate.

    • @raultennis7320
      @raultennis7320 5 років тому

      @HammerItTennis Thanks for the response. For a left corner serve, I think you are saying to line up your feet exactly the same way as in the 5:30 right corner serve... One thing that seems contradictory is video says front foot should be positioned "about 45 degrees in relation to the target line". So if the target line moves to the right corner, then it would seem the front foot position needs to move as well.

      @HammerItTennis  5 років тому

      @@raultennis7320 Sorry I missed this reply a few months back. Your feet maintain position to the target line. If the target line moves your feet would move. This would be both feet. Thanks for the questions!

    The last thing any player of any level should work on is a flat serve, low percentage effectiveness, no top players, tour level on down utilize this serve, other than the 6'9" guys like Dr Ivo.
    Serve looks stiff, 4.5 level mechanics 👉 problems again with foot positioning, limited leg drive, ..... mostly an arm serve. Watch a vid of Fed serving, watch from feet and legs on up ....

    • @MathCuriousity
      @MathCuriousity 7 років тому +2

      actually feds first serve is usually a flat or slice etc. Not a topspin serve....His big kicker is for his second. So I am not quite sure....where you get your information from. Fed and others get topspin on their "flat" serve either by jumping up into the serve so they are still rising as they hit, or by doing what Sampras/Taylor dent did which was, (and I could be wrong), be still moving their actual torso up into the ball at contact

      Poida Smith, I would like for you to provide the data you are referencing on the serve percentage effectiveness for each top level player for a flat serve and how that compares to other serves that they utilize. Furthermore, could you provide the resource for the data you are referencing on what serves are being utilized tour level on down.
      A flat serve is just one of many serves a player should learn to hit. Learning how the racquet plane in relation to the target path helps aim the ball, helps players develop a mastery of how to aim and adjust the racquet plane when using other types of serves. Additionally, very few players can hit a pure "flat" serve down in the court unless they have sufficient height to laser beam the ball from their contact point over the net, so most of us have a slight amount of rotation from the upward strike on the ball (the racquet and our bodies are moving upward through contact to lift the ball over the net - thus the "leg drive upward").
      Also, please explain what problems you see with the foot positioning. I utilize a step up motion, as millions of players and touring pros use, and due to the EXACT placement of my feet I hit the ball directly straight down the cone line in the video. Furthermore, at 5:40 both my feet are completely in midair similar to ua-cam.com/video/uyTtZE6LSek/v-deo.html - not sure how going completely airborne is a limited leg drive and mostly arm serve. When you watch Federer he jumps from a set position with his legs further apart and away from the baseline, so naturally they have to move further to get him to contact. The set position is utilized by many players and is personal preference, but I find most players find it more awkward and they tend to actually lose leg drive and forward momentum.

    I can’t believe this dude is showing a waiter’s tray serve in slow motion. Pronates way too early pointing the racquet to the sky and then pushing with a shoulder like every beginner. Also the tossing arm drops way too early and he squares himself to the court opening the shoulders too much. Lol. Wouldn’t you wanna learn the proper technique before making an “instructional” video? Also, as expected, it’s clear in the slow motion video that the racquet drops on the plane perpendicular to the target axis (parallel to the base line). Surprisingly this is actually correct BUT the dude keeps saying it needs to be on the plane of the “Target Line”. A complete joke this video is!

    • @HammerItTennis
      @HammerItTennis  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the comment, but perhaps you should learn what a waiter's tray serve is to help your understanding of the serve better. At 5:39 in the slow mo serve, the racquet face is facing the target. In a "waiter's tray" serve error, the face of the racquet points to the sky. That is a common error that beginners make because they open the racquet face up then they rotate to flat into the ball. Also, the tossing arm drops as soon as I begin to rotate upward to help propel the the right side of my body up to the ball. You should be using your opposite side of your body to help get more rotation out of your serve.

    • @deepseadiver8191
      @deepseadiver8191 4 роки тому

      Hammer It Tennis It does point to the sky. You go on edge very short and very quickly open the racquet to the sky. In a proper serve pronation happens at the very last moment before contact. Watch some videos about the common tossing arm mistakes. Not bringing it fully vertical and dropping early is a classic beginner error that is well known and is exactly what you’re doing. Your arm drops already as you go to trophy position.

    Good analysis. Some pick up the concept quickly while others don’t. I was one of those who didn’t. I think it was because of the incorrect posture of taking the racquet “behind the back” as you point out that mislead me. It was awkward and had a hard time “throwing” the racquet forward. It took “40 years” to finally get it ... elbow and shoulder injuries along the way. When I eventually saw it for myself (about 4 weeks ago), it took only 5 seconds. I might not have seen it if it wasn’t for UA-cam.
