    Why are there no ropes around the ring? Seems dangerous not to have ropes.

      Because sanda is played on a platform where there is no rope so you can play sanda, not boxing or kickboxing. The official sanda platform is surrounded by a protective mat underneath, search for sanda platform and you will understand. If you knew sanda as a sport you will know that and you will always keep in mind as a fighter not to step outside the platform or be thrown outside as it gives points to the opponent.
      In that way you can't approach that combat sport like kickboxing that has no throws or no standing wrestling and fights in a ring.

      It’s an old tradition in China dating back thousands of years. The platform is called a Lei Tai. Back then, if you were thrown off, you lost. Now, it counts as a takedown, but if you’re thrown off the platform twice in a round, you’ve lost the round.
