Very cagey affair, vital 3 points. We rode our luck a little bit, Jack back in the middle was so much better because the goal comes from a moment of brilliance from Grealish. Heaton and the 2 CBs were terrific, onto Saturday UTV!
Heaton, Hause, and our Captain was immense today, Trez,El Ghazi,Nakamba was poor, scrappy game but a win is a win.
How was nakamba poor? If nakamba is poor god knows what luiz is.
Totally agreee and think Matt Target at left back is poor.
most teams attack down are left flank and MT is always compromised.

Hourihane is underrated. Smart player who knows his chances.
Playing your best and getting no reward wears players down. Both teams showed signs of feeling the pressure. Villa began to turn the tide once Norwich lost heart and Dean Smith timed his substitution perfectly. A moment of sublime class from Jack, and Conor fired home through a narrow gap to deliver the points. There's no doubt that Villa need some new blood so they can rest those showing battle fatigue. It looks like it will be touch and go all the way.
Nakamba needs to learn to look forwards, find an aggressive pass not just stop and go back or we might as well play another defender. No one makes the moves, finds the spots or hits the ball like Hourihane.....he has to stay in the side, maybe in Nakamba’s spot
I prefer jack down the middle, trez and gahzi on the wing is much more dangerous with hourihane/mcginn in the middle with jack
I agree in theory, but not sure ghazi or trez really caused any danger today, hoping theyll hit some form. Jack being in the middle is way better so he can drop deep occasionally and drag us up the pitch and help out with the midfield. Without jack in the midfield, ball retention is awful and it gets overrun so easily. Worried abt Luiz, feel he may be a luxury player only useable when we have a lot of the ball. Gave away so many sloppy passes and fouls in dangerous areas today, he is so naive sometimes drives me mad hahhaa
John H would be difficult to get him in but eriksen from Tottenham they are looking to sell him for around 25million in January because his contract is running out

Heaton is easily our best signing of the summer. The rest are not up to much to be honest. Need signings in January to have any chance.
That's because he's the only premier player we signed, the rest are Championship level..
If we add a midfielder and a proven striker we will have no problem I criticized Wesley week in week out but I think he would come good with a striker with him Conor needs to start because Jack look much better with him starting Watford will be tough hopefully we go on a run now

Watford are a physically bigger + stronger squad than ours right now. Deeney is back now for them, who epitomises that physical endeavour. Plus I think he's a Blues fan.
We will need the midfield +wingers to move the ball quickly and keep possession better + much longer than they have recently.
It will be a task for our new defense! They will need the appropriate protection in front of them. And the more physical players like Wesley will be needed on defending set pieces. Alot of running for the players is required, to get something away after the busy schedule.

Awful game really, can't say I feel like we deserved the win but sometimes it's important to win scrappy. Hause, Grealish and Heaton and definite positives right now but on the flip side, we give sides too much respect and space and thus allow too many chances against our goal.
Tom Heaton was man of the match today. By a long shot. Without him today would have got absolutely battred. No doubt about it. Onwards and upwards, though how Deano keeps dropping Hourihan is beyond me? I would take him over Luiz any day if the week

John H He's still young and has been abit inconsistent. Gives possession away sometimes and tries to be fancy in the wrong areas every now and again. But at his age, with that pedigree he will get use to playing with us. Under 23's is always an unknown entity, compared with PL, where you know some of the best players and teams play.
He started with a bang with some excellent long range goals. He gets himself into good positions on the edge of the box for those shots. Plus he's quite technical and likes to get his head up and look for the wings +Wesley.
I'm starting to see improvements in his defending, but not 100% complete yet by any means. Ideally he needs to do what Whelan was able to do, and shield the back line, but at a higher pace suitable for PL.
I don't think Nakamba or Douglas Luiz are capable on their own yet, at doing the sufficient defensive job. But hopefully in time the midfield shape will naturally come as they learn.
I remember Idriss Gana Gueye and Veretout not so long ago, down Villa. Gueye's at PSG now and Veretout Roma. I thought they were both seriously lacking for Villa, but it takes time and the right environment and setting to see great improvement. During their time, it was high pressure survival, just like now.
But yesterday without his effort that was cleared off the line, we would have been much worse off!! Defensive duties first, especially if you're a defensive minded player. That's as good as a goal, if not better when you see where it hit him on the leg. Lucky too, but you make that luck by attempting to raise your leg for it. Alot of defenders don't attempt in case it deflects straight in, off them for a OG. Fair play Douglas Luiz!!
John H I think he, Conor and Grealish are all good at going forward but at different levels. Grealish is obviously number 1attacking mid. Conor is useful alongside or in and around Grealish and especially on set pieces. But I think Hourihane lacks some strength or bite when it comes to defending.
Because we lost Whelan + Jedinak, I saw Douglas Luiz firstly as a holding mid, who will give it to the more experienced midfielders,to create and score. But Douglas Luiz will contribute more up the pitch, when Villa can control possession better and dominate games. We just aren't quite there yet to allow Douglas Luiz that licence to gallop forward yet. But I agree he can definitely control the tempo with more experience and confidence. Hopefully he is picking up the language more as this would be helpful!
When the midfield shape does take form, hopefully Nakamba will be comfortable as the single DM covering and allow the rest some more freedom. Still a work in progress, even after 19 games. We did sign alot of new players in the summer and hopefully it clicks properly in time, with enough points left to play for.
Watford is a different test however. Happy new year buddy!!
John H it would be nice if Hause+Konsa plus Nakamba + Luiz could establish solid partnerships, while Ming's and McGinn are out.
It would show a strength in depth if those guys can't walk straight back in because we've put a good run of results together, in the coming weeks.
I think Villa were quite smart about bringing Wesley+ Douglas Luiz together along with Trez + Nakamba. Elmohamady has an established friendship with Trez from the Egyptian national team. And I'm sure Wes + DL will have played together many times coming up through Brazil's system. I know they were both named in the full squad during the last international break. Plus Nakamba was at Brugge with Wes and Engels. I think when the dust settles after the new year, you'll see more consistent performances from all these new signings.
I think we lose Douglas Luiz in January because of being called up to Brazil's Olympic qualifying squad. I believe they have a tournament somewhere. So a short term central midfield loan could be likely, unless Lansbury can step in.
It's a shame for Andre Green because he can't get near the Preston squad atm. He might be useful for pace and competition for El Ghazi aswell, if we recall him in the new year. Although he is still quite raw! He needs experience sometime and would be a shame if he couldn't step out in the PL, if we did go down.
Shaky display. Very nervy. Norwich were better most of the game. We should be dominating them games at home. Luiz and nakamba together, no thanks! Both centre backs were great. Chuffed for hause especially and Heaton was class. Only Jack as Well that played good. Watford will be difficult, they have picked up a few points since deeney came back. Hope for a draw I reckon. Sad but true. Massive improvement needed all round. UTV

The season is going to be a long slog, but why does smith insist on all 11 players defending in our box from dead ball situations and all 11 behind the ball in the final 3rd from open play ? It’s inviting pressure with no outlet ball.

Good teams can play horrific football for a majority of the 90 and still find a way to get 3 pts. Guess that makes Villa good? Not sure. But Conor plays match winner and Smith buys himself some more time. Still papering over the cracks and the 4-3-3 setup/ tactics again prove predictable and lacking dynamism. Can Villa put a complete 90 match together at Watford with 3pts in the bag early? Still not convinced. Fingers crossed. UTV!
These players need time and sadly there is no time in this league at all. Look at Adama traore, he was slagged off all the time at Villa and now he is some player. They need time and coaching. Of course we all want instant results but it shall not happen. Staying up needs to be our main objective and build on this. That young lad who said that Norwich were poorer than us, I disagree. Norwich deserved something from that game but we managed to get something out of it.
lets not gloss over how bad the up front 3 were yet again no consistency or quality Wesley was unbelievably bad again and our midfielders are bailing us out once more. We NEED at least 1 winger and a striker and some better back up at full back than taylor and elmo

V tepid, uninspired yet dogged display. More down to Norwich's inability to put us to the sword than us being good. Thankful for 3 points but nothing to get too excited about going into Watford.
Norwich poorer than Villa! Blimey that young lad watched a different game to me then! We (Norwich) were the better side for the majority of the match

I agree pal, I spoke to a fair few of you’re fans leaving the ground & they all said the same thing, story of you’re season not being clinical enough, I’ll take the win as scrappy as it was, Grealish is a wonderfully footballer without him we’d be lost his assist was top draw & Hourihane scores for the 6th time in 5 games vs Norwich.
As a villa fan i have to agree, we were lucky to win, villa fans take off the blinkers, this is going to be really hard to stay up and pray Jack stays fit.

Norwich and villa are the two worst teams in the league by a mile. 4 out of the last 5 teams coming up via playoffs have gone back down. Watford will fly up the league now . I'll say west ham will get the last relegation spot .
