Hawks, racoons and numerous predators will go right through netting and chicken wire..hardware cloth is the best for protection on your coops! I would have thought your coop was safe. I'm like you I would have never imagined a hawk being able to get a bird! So sorry MC lost a pigeon!
So sorry MaryCarl lost one of her birds. I love seeing the hawks here in Kansas but not at my bird feeders. There is one road I travel about 30 miles from my house. I count the hawks along the way. There will be 25 to 30 hawks. It's all pasture land love to see them. Maybe you could put hardware cloth to cover the flight door. That way the birds can still look out. They are so beautiful. ❤❤
Yes. So sad for Mary Carl. Unfortunately they say chicken wire mesh is only good at keeping chickens in but not predators out. Hardware cloth is becoming the standard for coop building. If you go to ¼", even keep snakes out. I live in Wisconsin. I've seen hawk dive into shrub to pick off small song birds like chickadees and sparrows. Suburban "rural" areas you see all sorts of wild life interaction. We even have coyotes out here on the Northern side of Milwaukee County
You’re right. Hardware cloth is the way to go for any type of outdoor bird enclosure or run. It should also be attached to the wood with screws and washers to prevent other predators like raccoons.
MaryCarl sorry to hear about your birds. You have a mature attitude and you're an awesome young lady. Great job sharing the story with us, Brooke. Glad to hear DeeDee enjoying her kangaroo pouch 😊😊🥰🥰
MaryCarl is a beautiful young woman. So forgiving. I Understand her thought of it being the circle of life. but still is hard when you have raised them pigeons and spent so much time with them. I give her a lot of props. you and Jason have raised a very beautiful loving caring daughter, and I enjoy watching your channel. Thank you for sharing your farm life with us
So sorry Mary Carl lost two of her pigeons. Maybe you could put a piece of plexiglass up there and the pigeons can still look out... I'm glad that Dede enjoys her new mode of transportation, she just loves being close to you Brooke🤗
Brooke, if you have more of the what you put round the pigeon purple palace, put it on the small door where the hawk got that pigeon. I am sorry that two of MaryCarl’s pigeons were lost. That way, the pigeons will still be able to look out of their spot.
I’m with you Brooke! I know birds of prey have to eat but they can go elsewhere in my book. I live in town and have two chickens and one outside cat. The cat watched after the chickens when they are out in the yard which is every day it’s not raining. If I’m at the store, which is only 2 miles from my house and see a hawk, I call my husband to tell him to be on the lookout! So sorry for the loss of MC’s bird….at least the problem was caught and fixed. Good job Mama!🥰🕊️
Brooke, would putting a piece of that heavy hardware cloth over that area rather than the piece of wood be an option? They'd be able to see out their little window then. Just thinking out loud.😊 I'm so sorry the pigeon did not survive.🙁
Instead of a board to block their view, get the wire netting like you have on the outside of the Aviary! You would just need a small piece and you can remove it when you need to! That way they can still look out, but nothing can reach them!
Hi Brooke. So glad the main coop is covered. Cannot believe this would of happened there. Glad you were able to see and do something about it. So sorry MaryCarl your showing a very mature attitude and have a great understanding of the circle of life. Glad they are all safe now. Lots of love and prayers. Take care God Bless. 💕🙏
So very sorry for the loss of your sweet birds 😢 Unfortunately, that's how we learn... the hard way 😢 Hopefully, the predator birds will move along once they see it's too difficult to get to your birds. Thank you so much for sharing your "leftovers" with Catherine... she's such an amazing person and y'all are completely awesome for helping her out! Looking forward to seeing you again in April! Hugs to you all! Launda ❤
I love hawks. Keep in mind they are part of the balance of life. We need them. Like you said they eat field mice. They go after snakes. It’s unfortunate for Mary Carl they are taking aim at her pet birds.
I'm so sorry for your loss 💔 Maybe put a piece of plexiglass instead of something they can't see thru? That way they can still enjoy their view? Just a thought. I love y'all ❤️🕊🐦
Hi Brooke. 😢 for Mary Carl. Perhaps you could tie wrap hardware cloth on the outside of the swinging door or staple it to the wood frame so the pigeons can still sit up top and look out. Just a thought. They really seem to like that perch.
I am so sorry for the loss of Marycarl’s 2 birds. I have to watch my teacup poodle closely in the spring and fall. She is only 6 pounds and I have to check the sky before we go out.
Brooke, it's clear your heart aches for your daughter's loss. I'm so sorry this happened, but you are right, this is the natural order of things and something we cannot change. We learn and sometimes we grieve and we move on.
The problem with predators is once they think they've found an easy meal, they'll try their luck for as long as possible. I'm glad Cheese seems to be keeping all the chickens safe.
Good morning Brooke and thank you for your wonderful smile that brightens our day. Sorry to hear about the circle of life incidents, thank God and your Family’s Guardianship that MaryCarl is able to deal with loss. I’m thinking why not place some of the heavy steel mesh over the pigeons gate door and move the ledge they like sitting on a little further back. That way they would remain safe and still enjoy the advantages of their perch view are in front of the swinging door. DeDe sure loves being a Hipster and your bond with her is so awesome. 😀👍🕊️👍🕊️👍🕊️
I'm so sorry that happened. I am so proud of Mary Carl's ability to love despite the loss. I lost most of my chickens to hawks last year and it tore me up.
Brooke may I suggest to put a clear Plexiglass or Acrylic Sheet instead of wood? If thick enough it would be as safe as wood and it wouldn't block the view as much for the pigeons. Thank you for your videos. I love your channel, your main channel with Jason and the kids channel too. :) All the best to you and your family & all your animals. Bless you all
It’s so hard to keep everyone safe but Nature has a way of providing. Watch the catch on that door, they’ll unlock that too if it’s a hook. I’d double the wire on top of the Aviary or put something on top, maybe moving things or another layer of screen. I’m sorry Marycarl, I use to breed birds myself( parrots) and sometimes we lose them, but, ultimately it is not our choice no matter how hard we try. You’ve done a wonderful job being a Caretaker, just keep going as you have others that need you.
With all those predator birds I am glad you are carrying DiDi around. I have seen a bunch of tiny dogs like her get attacked by hawks. My little black sable Pom rode around on my golf cart on our 60 acres for just that reason. Well not driving of course, but riding. He actually tucked in under my right arm to be cuddled as I drove. I miss my little Juni so much. I love watch DiDi as it brings back such fond memories.
I am sad for Mary Carl. I am so impressed by her maturity. Brooke you are so sweet. I appreciate how you share things here in Videos. No Hawks Allowed made me giggle.
I live in Norfolk, Virginia, we have a large hawk and eagle presence and have small dogs. One day one of the dogs was missing from our fenced backyard. We can only assume one of those birds stole him. I am sad for MaryCarl’s loss. I’m impressed with her attitude towards her loss, very mature, she’s such a lovely, caring young lady. Prayers 🙏
Just put hardware cloth over the trap door itself. Or put more dividers so it can't get its claw through it. No need to board it up. Mary Carl has a good understanding of life. Bless her.
Plz tell MaryCarl we are so sorry for the loss of the two pigeons. It’s so sad. Thank you Brooke for sharing this with us. Much love to you, your family and all the animals. God Bless you all. 🙏❤️✝️🥰🤗😢🙏
Happy Thursday Brooke ❤❤ I'm so sorry 😞 about losing Mary Carl's pigeons 😢 ..I'm like you Brooke it is sad and still makes you feel angry ❤❤Much love from Toledo OH 13:10
It's hard as a mom to not be upset by her losing a couple birds. You know how much time and love she gives them. At least now they have more protection and are safe. Sorry to MaryCarl for her loss!
1) If the pigeons like looking out. Could consider a sheet of acrylic or perspex. 2) would it be practical to allow them access to one of the outside avories giving them a little more space to roam during the winter when they are not allowed to fly out side asumming that not interfere to much with birds that are normally in those areas.
So sad for the loss of Mary Carl's pigeon. I know she loves ever one of them . Maybe a piece of the hardware cloth over the trapdoor would protect the birds but allow them to see out . I've been very lucky not to have lost any chickens to predators but I'm planning to get a goose to add to my flock . God bless y'all and lots of love from Anna in Iowa
🙋🏼♀️🕊️I’m sad for your loss, MaryCarl, Brooke and Jason. I know it’s part of life, 😢but I, also, know how much you all love each and every one of your all animals. 🙏🏻 Knowing what a great job Cheese does protecting the Chickens, is it possible to have geese in the same field as the pigeon loft? They might, also, be protection for the Peafowl and Peachicks?
Also any that established nest sights will be fledging and teaching them come Feb and March so the aerial theat will double/triple depending on how successful they were. Probably best to except permanent captivity than heavy losses. All the best from a wildlife bird observer of going on 65+ years. 🤗❤️🌈🙏🕊️
MaryCarl is amazing! She's an Earth Angel, some would say an "old soul", wise beyond her years. You and Jason must be so proud of her, beautiful, highly intelligent, and incredibly sweet!
So sorry for MaryCarl's loss of two pigeons. Very sad for her to have to face that. By the way the pouch for Dee Dee is wonderful and you can save wear and tear on her little old legs. Love you all!!💕🕊
I feel so sorry for Mary Carl's loss. The hawk got a taste of pigeon and it made him bold to do what he did. The hawk was desperate for food. It's a remarkable and bold move on the hawks part.
MaryCarl, so sorry you lost another pigeon but so cool that you understand. You are such a wonderful young lady who loves burds and now youblove to do bird photography. Please have fun. Thanks 😊
Why not put a piece of hardware cloth over the trap door? I know you already put the plywood on but like you said, they enjoy sitting up there looking out. Just a suggestion. I hope that hawk doesn’t come back! Lots of prayers for y’all! Love and blessings from this old Tuscaloosa girl!❤❤❤
You might want to add a second door 16 inches away from other fixed door for pigeons. Kind of a dual entry system with entry covered between the two doors that should still allow the locking of inner door and predators will not be able to reach any bird looking out inner doorway. Sorry for the loss Mary Carl.
So sorry for your loss Mary Carl We had three bald eagles that flew into our barn yard. I'll try to download the video. We loss our barn yard rabbit We always have hawks and crows
We had a HUGE bird perch in our backyard ... Thought it was an owl, realized it was DAY TIME= not owl time. RedTailed Hawk. We have a bird feeder, Hawk was looking for a meal.... Not another birdie in sight FOR HOURS!!! Hawk finally moved on. Still, a majestic sight
We have red tailed Hawks here in Pennsylvania too. I have watched many black birds chasing off the Hawks, which I dont understand since the Hawk is so much bigger. 1 day outside my house I seen a Red tailed Hawk sitting on a telephone pole and was going to get my camera for a photo since it was so close, then a single black bird came along and chased it off - crazy right.

I live in Wisconsin. I've seen hawk dive into shrub to pick off small song birds like chickadees and sparrows. Suburban "rural" areas you see all sorts of wild life interaction. We even have coyotes out here on the Northern side of Milwaukee County
Isn’t this the second time a hawk has gotten one of her birds? So sorry 😢
You’re right. Hardware cloth is the way to go for any type of outdoor bird enclosure or run. It should also be attached to the wood with screws and washers to prevent other predators like raccoons.
Good to hear how wise MaryCarl is when it comes to the death of 2 of her birds. She teaches all of us in many ways.
I live in the UK and have seen hawks get their talons through half inch wire and get a canary so what we did was double wire aviary inside and out.
Can you put plexiglass so the birds can see out?
So sorry Mary Carl. You are an incredible young woman and I so appreciate your attitude toward the hawks and real life.
MaryCarl sorry to hear about your birds. You have a mature attitude and you're an awesome young lady. Great job sharing the story with us, Brooke. Glad to hear DeeDee enjoying her kangaroo pouch 😊😊🥰🥰
Sorry for your loss MaryCarl

I love the way you said that! Our world 'has more than a good chance' with MC's generation!
Could Hawks go through plexiglass? That would give pigeons a site line.
Mary Carl has a loving soul. Prayers for the family.
So sorry Mary Carl lost two of her pigeons. Maybe you could put a piece of plexiglass up there and the pigeons can still look out... I'm glad that Dede enjoys her new mode of transportation, she just loves being close to you Brooke🤗
Ha I just mentioned that as well 😊

That's what I thought-- put hardware cloth over it so they still get weather and views there.
I was thinking hardware cloth as well

Brooke, here in Dublin Ireland we always have our landing board on a hinge , we lock it up every night .
Brooke, would putting a piece of that heavy hardware cloth over that area rather than the piece of wood be an option? They'd be able to see out their little window then. Just thinking out loud.😊 I'm so sorry the pigeon did not survive.🙁

Mary carl is brilliant, i would have been heartbroken x x bless her x
Blessings sent for the loss😢
So sorry that happened. I am so glad Mary Carl has the attitude she has about the circle of life. A lot of grown-ups can't accept that. 💛👏
Good morning
Hardware cloth over that grill would work and look nice too. So sorry Marycarl, who'd of thought.
Hi Brooke. 😢 for Mary Carl. Perhaps you could tie wrap hardware cloth on the outside of the swinging door or staple it to the wood frame so the pigeons can still sit up top and look out. Just a thought. They really seem to like that perch.
I’m so sorry for the loss. 😢🙏🏽💓
Good morning Brook from Kentucky.
So sorry. Those darn hawks 💔😢💞🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻💞💙

Saddened for MaryCarl, and all y'all... But Farm life and birds are great educators....MaryCarl is blessed with knowledgeable loving parents.❤️❤️❤️
We are sorry for your loss Mary Carl. Yes, hardware cloth is likely a good idea.
Hi 👋 Cog Hill

Here in Nother Ca the chicken hawks will perch on my fence and down in the shrubbery. Surprised the would be so bold.

So sorry for your loss MC

Like I always say, Nature is impartial. Thank you for not blaming the hawks, that said, I hope the rest of your birds stay safe as possible!

Yes, this is the time of the year for the southern hawk migration it's just going to get worse as winter comes through sorry for your loss. Mary Carl

You do an excellent job protecting your animals. Sometimes nature finds a way.
Will wind chimes deter the hawks??? So Sorry about the pigeons.
Hugs
You have a loving soul of a momma

MaryCarl I am so sorry you lost one of your precious birds. Prayers for you and your family. God bless.❤🙏
Thank you for your instructional video. You are helping others. Have a nice day.
Oh my goodness 😢 please tell Mary Carl, I am very sorry for the loss of her beautiful birds. She is an amazing young lady.
So sorry for MaryCarl and the loss of her pigeons. She is so much wiser than her years.
Could a piece of hardware cloth be placed over the little door?
Sorry for your lost MaryCarl. Sending prayers God bless
Awe , I'm so sorry this happened. MC is more forgiving than I am.
We keep green shade cloth over our koi pond, the herons and hawks can't see thru it. You may try that on the new area. Those triangle shade cloths work good too. Keeps my chickens safer. Good luck, so sorry for Mary Carl's losses.
Oh poor Miss Mary ! So sorry about your feathered babys.
So sorry for MaryCarl ! So for giving ! She's a smart young woman ! God Bless ❤
I had a hawk in the chicken coop waiting for the birds to come in he was setting on the roost.
