Actually, I was just thinking about how he's was kind of wrong about beta. Beta implies testing, who says they are testing the game? Maybe they are testing the network or something else behind the scenes? But other than that, he was pretty much right about everything else, as he was usually right about most things.
@@nicodemous52 I think that kind of proves him right by you saying that. His main grip is how long a game is in 'beta' for and how it's used to brush off criticism. 'Testing' should never take 2-3 years, especially on these big titles.
I'll always appreciate the fact that he accepted that it was part of the rules of the game that if it's ok for people to give his videos a "like" it's equally within their right to click the "dislike" button instead, and he almost dared you to do so and see if he cared (he didn't, he just respected your right to disagree even to that extent). Much respect, sir.
I've been going back and visiting all his WTF is videos looking for gems I may have missed because I wasn't really picking up games from pretty much the time he started until this year. I started watching some of his think pieces because they are still mostly relevant and they still tickle my brain. Pro tip, the WTF is playlist is missing a lot of the earlier ones, if you want to get them all, you have to go to the whole video play list and just visually hunt them down. Especially hard on the oldest ones as they didn't have dedicated title cards on them.

Both underrated and overrated are used far too often and usually incorrectly. I saw someone post "Fallout New Vegas is underrated" recently. Who the hell is underrating New Vegas? That's a game that gets nothing but praise.

Fortnite is another example of a supposedly early access game, in which three years after launch, isn't showing any signs of renaming itself into a full release.
Beta and alpha are still wrongly used to this day. I've played games actually in beta and one in alpha. If an early access game is buggy, that isn't beta. That is early access, which are typically buggy. How made I was getting when Heroes of the Storm was in the "alpha" state with invitations from blizz. I've watched streams and footage. @@CerpinTxt87 It's a subjective term. Never forget that TB also championed the use of the subjective in the pursuit of the objective, IE he said there is no such thing as a totally objective review, but that didn't mean it wasn't a noble goal and that subjectivity couldn't be mitigated.
You can just say that you don't like it for so and so reasons. Saying it's overrated like somehow everyone else got it wrong is just irritating and also useless info.
I think "overrated" isn't a criticism of the product. If used as such, feel free to verbally slap the person making that argument. Overrated is a criticism of consumers. A lot of the time a mediocre or slightly above product gets massive popularity. Thus it becomes "overrated". It's not really a useful description of something, but it has a clear meaning.
If the product is mediocre, then there is a reason behind it. The reason behind it is not because it is popular. That's basically what the implication is. That something being overrated and popular means that it can't be any good on its own merits. Just say what it is, not what people think of it.
TB's views about the Roguelike genre, especially in this video, have never resonated with me. Roguelikes that are actually like Rogue barely exist anymore, so repurposing the term isn't as harmful as using the term RPG for non-RPG's (even though that term is becoming polluted as well). I would also argue that the permadeath and randomness of modern Roguelikes are way more valuable aspects to describe than the turn based combat found in classic Roguelikes, so using the term in this way is actually beneficial and makes describing these games easier. I find it especially odd that TB expresses willingness to change the term Pay-To-Win in this very video as he then goes on to make an argument against the very same thing with Roguelike.
There are very few times where I think something is truly overrated. And by overrated I mean a piece of media that is an awful piece of art but valued incredibly highly. My favourite example is All Quiet on the Western Front (2022), a film considered equal or even greater than Saving Private Ryan when it is a film with even less substance than Now You See Me. Besides, for the most part, the visuals, those are great. But the writing is absolutely horrible and does not deserve to be rated as highly as it is. Overrated one might say. Would never use the term though, I would just describe how it is a bad piece of art and let the person come to their own conclusion.
I disagree with 1st point cause it makes no sense what so ever. P2W terminology should always exist, cause it "perfectly" explains what the business model is.

Why? In my experience, it’s always used properly: to describe a game that will, for years after its launch, provide new content for players.
