    We recently had this question asked on a net. We went over APRS and winlink to text messaging/email but we also talked about traffic handling. For some people with limited reach passing on a message as hams have always done is the best option. It's good to be familiar with traffic handling nets and at least the concept.

      Check out the Brand new just FCC authorized AT&T 1st Net. It address that issue.

    Another non ham communication option via text is creating a mesh network with goTenna. Limited to simplex distances but not contingent upon the internet. Just pair each goTenna unit with your phone and text securely to your friends.

    I love this topic. Great practical advice. I’ve focused on APRS, but it seems I need to try Winlink again. In the past, the lack of nearby gateways took this option off the table. Keep up the great work!

      I have ran into the same issue with lack of APRS digipeaters in certain areas. Nice to have other options available.

    Great vid. Winlink works really well sending texts to and from non hams. Agree that it would be nice to at least get and acknowledge that your message was put into the system by js8. Keep up the good work 73.

    What about a ham radocb radio exchange? I know it's not allowed to use ether the one or the other trx on the other band (10m11m). Non hams have often cb radios.

    I'm a big fan of JS8. I keep intending to set up Winlink, but I don't like the name. It sounds too much like Windows. 😀

    • @KM4ACK

      Pat is a cross-platform Winlink client. Jason has a bunch of videos setting it up on Raspberry Pi.

    • @Liberty4Ever
      @Liberty4Ever 3 роки тому

      @@mattrunyan1221 - Thanks for the info. I used Jason's script several months ago to install the software for Winlink on my Pi4 that I primarily use for JS8. I was mostly just making a joke about my preference for Linux instead of Windows.
      A tornado or forest fire are locslized emergencies and Winlink would be very useful to email non-hams outside the impacted area. An EMP or CME would be more widespread and it's less likely that infrastructure to support email would exist across a continent.
      I should add Winlink to my ham bag of tricks, even if I don't care for the name. 😀

    I would love winlink if I could ever hit a gateway reliably. I try a few times a year get frustrated and quit it. I have no idea why it is so difficult. I am not even QRP.

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  3 роки тому +1

      It can be frustrating until you find a few good reliable gateways. I tell everyone to start with 40M and take into account what type of antenna you are using. Even with that, it can take a while to figure out good gateways. One good tool is "Auto Pat" built into Pat Menu on build a pi.

      In our 2 stoplight town in South Texas we've lost cell service due to a cut cable a few times. The only internet available here is through hotspots or satellite. Most everyone uses ATT hotspot routers. When things go out, like the cut cable, internet, cell phones, landline phones, business computer based operations. If you needed to call 911 you are dead in the water. Pun not intended. At those times analog ham radio is the only comms unless you drive miles away to get to another cell tower system that is still active.

      @@mumi009 No kidding. When we first moved here three years ago it worked great. Lately I have to reset the hotspot/router three or four times a day. I'm also hearing others in the area having problems too. Sad thing is everything is based on it. TV, internet, house phone (which I don't even use). We have Sprint (now T-Mobile) for our cell phones. When the towers go down here though, it all goes down regardless of carrier.
      Yeah, kinda miss actual wired, analog phones.

    Do not forget the new AT&T 1st net for new public safety Ham radio interoperability. Working on the old TV analog audio channels Channel 2-5. It allows access to the AT&T 4 g cellular networks. To use the system you need to be certified in RACES and ARES. Their is a very strict screening process to go through for eligibility. Now available on the west coast for help with all the wild land fires.
