Hi, I thinked about this alot. I was thinking It is such a hassle to do but then I saw Linus video about the 300 dolar cheap pc build with modified laptop CPU on h110 board and it seemed very reasonable. I talked with the seller on Aliexpress, he sells 6/12 QQLT ES progressor for 120 dolars and gives modified BIOS for any LGA1151 motherboard. I kinda wonder if my Gigabyte z170 hd3p's VRMs can handle an overclocked 6/12 progressor or is it worth doing the modification. Can you cover those CPUs in a video, it would be interesting to compare them with their desktop counterparts.
Hey Luumi, great work. I'm looking at doing the same on another board (M8H) that has a different PCB layout around the BIOS Flashback chip - and there isn't a set of pads in the equivalent position - at least not on the top of the board. It looks from your close-up that one of the two pads that need to be connected to defeat the flashback security lock runs to pin number 36 on the IC. Is that correct? On my board, pin 36 vias to the underside - where it runs to a similar-looking pair of easily bridgable pads, the other of which is on a track that connects to pin 1 of the flashback chip. Does that sound like the ones to be connecting?
I think this depends on the used motherboard. On that ASUS motherboard needed hardware mod to allow custom bios, and jump wire to allow the system to turn on.
Thanks for showing up how ridiculous Intel were in forcing new sockets on everyone who had ambitions of being able to run more than four cores and eight threads... if they were worried about cheap OEM boards burning out VRMs then just limit backwards compatibility to Z170 and Z270 which most people would be fine with , with those boards being massively over-engineered to begin with as you've been showing with your 9900K @ 5.5Ghz on a Z170
Thanks for all effort. I have a question for you because you seems like expert on this. I have Asus ROG G20CI (Ready PC) and its have 8th gen microcode inside. But it support only 7th gen. I want to upgrade i7 7700 to i7 8700. Do i need to isolate or connect pins? And i need to add 8th gen microcode again?

Thank you for the guide though. Shows you that what Intel did back then was completely unnessecary. I've got a Z270 board here as well as a Dell PC with a 9900k, but, well, a terrible Dell Motherboard. Therefore just wanted to try and modify the Z270.
Hi I just saw this video and I got some questions, I hope you can help me. 1. Do this work in any z270 mobo? (I will buy a used MSI z270 Gaming M5) 2. Do I have to made some wire/soldering mod on the mobo? 3. Once I completely mod the mobo, do I be able to still use 6th and 7th cpus? (maybe dumb question, sorry for that) Thanks for your help.
From what I've gathered watching his two videos on the subject multiple times: yes, this mod will work with any z170/270 board, and yes, you need to either hard mod the motherboard to create the "socket occupied" state or short the pads on the back of the cpu. There is someone else in these comments who says they got the mod to work on an MSI z270
I JUST UPLOADED the tool I found on Google Drive as many of you said the Win-Raid one is dead. Try this one out: drive.google.com/file/d/11HHu9o9Gv49AqEOhEcTUpmHPZKu1l6-m/view?usp=sharing
Does the BIOS modified by Win-Raid tool still supports older (6 and 7th gen) CPUs? Could I first flash it with my current CPU to test if it works and only then upgrade?
Hey great video, thx for your work.. May you please tell me to do minimal? I only want to exchange the essential codes to make z170 support my i3 - 8100..So I don't want IGPU, can i pick these things off? easily... I love your explanation man... I have a Strix z270F and a crappy 7700k... I wish I could go with a 9700k or 9900k with this motherboard... sigh. It doesn't have BIOS Flashback so if I accidentally brick it, it's all gone, that's why I don't feel like taking that risk for now :| I think the best I can do is delid the 7700k
Can I continue to use the previous processor (i7-7700k) with the modifications (SKT_OCC pin to ground)? Or do I have to install a Coffee Lake CPU? Could this cause damage?
Hey man, are you aware of a Custom BIOS for the GA Z170x soc force to support the 8700k? Do the CPU pads need to be connected? any connections need to be jumped on the board?
This is an old video but I have a question regarding this on ASUS boards. The Asus Tuf Z270 Mark 1 in particular. Do you risk losing serial #/ MAC address/ UUID when using the bios flashback?
@@lovelessZN Alright thanks! I have definitely seen the HWBOT page, but I was hoping to NOT have to solder the board and just hoped for an edited BIOS. I have seen it and considered it (and am 100% capable of doing it properly easily), but my 7700k was still keeping up with 90% of the tasks I used it for, but it's hindering work flow now. I feel so ripped off by Intel. I have never seen a Chipset just get MURDERED after a couple of months like the Z270. I was keeping up with all the RYZEN news, but needed a PC before I could wait to see if RYZEN paid off, and initially with all the problems people were having RYZEN, I thought, "meh I made the right choice and when higher core/thread Intel CPU's come out, I'll get one"... WAS I EVER WRONG. I even got a used/freeish 6600k just to have a working system while I awaited the launch of newer intel CPU's. Needless to say, I ended up getting/delidding a 7700k once everything unfolded, and made/sold an i5 6600k system for a customer on a budget. Now I am wondering if I should just leave this as is, and sell an APEX IX with a delidded/lapped i7 (Maybe throw in an extra 250GB EVO 970) and put that money towards a new RYZEN system instead of doing this. But this looks like a fun project, but also an expensive one that almost justifies a move to RYZEN given this is my daily work horse right now.
@@LuumiJuhani Thanks for the great content/links etc. I know the board can handle it, the VRM is hard to heat up in the worst of conditions with an i7 7700k (under 50C with no air flow, and torture tests running/EVERYTHING OC'd and high voltages, and under 40C with a single 120mm fan blowing over the "heat sinks"/blocks of aluminum). Is it worth selling the delidded/lapped 7700k with the board and going to RYZEN for more cores though. This has become my daily driver, and test bench for customer's parts. It needs to work, but I also need more cores for the work I do daily with the PC (rendering/encoding etc). It seems like a fun project if I could get a dirt cheap 9700k, but at that price they are going for, maybe sell what I have and move to RYZEN CPU/Good X470 board. Weighing my options heavily, but might do this mod regardless & see what drops in my lap regarding Intel CPU's on the cheap.

Then if i do not want to short things on the mobo by soldering, can use a pencil to short the two pins on the cpu and some tape to isolate those other two pins (think is needed?) and should i be good to go? Is this a solder-free solution? (i've never soldered and i've not the guts to try it for the first time on my mobo)
Did you attempt the mod? I am tempted to just upgrading to an 8700k on this z170 maximus viii cause b550 zen 2/3 and z490 10th gen intel are not looking so appealing tbh. There is a way to do this without soldering?

On my board, pin 36 vias to the underside - where it runs to a similar-looking pair of easily bridgable pads, the other of which is on a track that connects to pin 1 of the flashback chip. Does that sound like the ones to be connecting?
Great video, glad you finally made it!
Thanks for helping!
Very nice! I'm looking foreward to do this. The question is: Can you enable software TPM, when you've done it?
Greetings.
I have MSI z170a-pro motherboard. Is it possible to make it work with i7 9700/8700? Or i5 9400f at least?
Great video btw
Something I was a bit confused about:
Do I have to complete the hardware modifications? Or is the modified BIOS enough now?
I think this depends on the used motherboard. On that ASUS motherboard needed hardware mod to allow custom bios, and jump wire to allow the system to turn on.
@@LuumiJuhani Did you actually also make a video on that?
@@LuumiJuhani And for getting the BIOS on the motherboard cant you use AFUDOS or a BIOS Chip Programmer?
I think AFUDOS works on ASUS boards
Thanks for showing up how ridiculous Intel were in forcing new sockets on everyone who had ambitions of being able to run more than four cores and eight threads... if they were worried about cheap OEM boards burning out VRMs then just limit backwards compatibility to Z170 and Z270 which most people would be fine with , with those boards being massively over-engineered to begin with as you've been showing with your 9900K @ 5.5Ghz on a Z170
Please revisit this coz apparently, H110 budget boards can be moded as well. Love your contents, you're awesome sir! 😁👌🏻
Actually i need a answer, not just like but what can i say...
Hey;
I know I'm three years late, but none of the links to the tool work...
Is there any way you could help me finding the tool? Seems to have been taken down-
Greetings.
(I will buy a used MSI z270 Gaming M5)
2. Do I have to made some wire/soldering mod on the mobo?
3. Once I completely mod the mobo, do I be able to still use 6th and 7th cpus? (maybe dumb question, sorry for that)
Thanks for your help.
Broken 😢
Thanks for making this!
Does the BIOS modified by Win-Raid tool still supports older (6 and 7th gen) CPUs?
Could I first flash it with my current CPU to test if it works and only then upgrade?
Yes you can still maintain the normal microcodes there too.
i have a question, i have an asrock fatal1ty gaming k4 z170 can i do what you show in the video with an i7 9700 ?
Hey great video, thx for your work.. May you please tell me to do minimal? I only want to exchange the essential codes to make z170 support my i3 - 8100..So I don't want IGPU, can i pick these things off? easily... Lastly, the physical modification you shorted with a copper yellow wire, does this have to be done and can I do it on all Z170 boards?
Yes either this wire on board or short the 2 pads under the CPU.
Anyone help. How to flash the BIOS without the button? My motherboard (Asus Z270-P) dont have this button.
Hello! Thanks for the detailed video. I will try it if you can help me. I am thinking abouy upgrade my CPU. There was a discount on Amazon. i7 9700(non-K) 274€, so I have ordered one. The question is I have Asrock z170m extreme 4 mainboard and I am pretty happy wirh it. Will it support? What you think?
I love your explanation man... I have a Strix z270F and a crappy 7700k... I wish I could go with a 9700k or 9900k with this motherboard... sigh. It doesn't have BIOS Flashback so if I accidentally brick it, it's all gone, that's why I don't feel like taking that risk for now :|
I think the best I can do is delid the 7700k
Can I continue to use the previous processor (i7-7700k) with the modifications (SKT_OCC pin to ground)? Or do I have to install a Coffee Lake CPU? Could this cause damage?
would the modified bios motherboard would it still run 6 and 7gen?
Luumi what do you think about going for m9 apex as a cheap alternative for EVGA Dark with 9900k? (I don't want to spend 500usd on a mobo :/)
It should work great! I recommend you try to make a bios yourself with this tool.
When running the Coffee Lake AllInOne tool there is no option for the I9 9900K, it only goes up to the 9600K or is there a newer tool that I missed?
Did you find out the answer?
ROG MAXIMUS IX CODE z270 are the same?
I have The Same Motherboard
Hey man, are you aware of a Custom BIOS for the GA Z170x soc force to support the 8700k? Do the CPU pads need to be connected? any connections need to be jumped on the board?
Thanks you for sharing ! 👍
I have a Z170M OC Formula, would you recommend following this guide or the older guide?
Essentially what I am asking is should I use the premade bios for the MOCF from the forum in the older video or do it myself as shown here?
Just use the already installed bios, but you could do it the same way yes like this.
Tengo una motherboard gigabyte z170x gaming g1, se le podrá hacer esta modificación? Que cpu seria el maximo soportado?
This is an old video but I have a question regarding this on ASUS boards. The Asus Tuf Z270 Mark 1 in particular. Do you risk losing serial #/ MAC address/ UUID when using the bios flashback?
There's a guy that shows how to do that retrieve it before you modify then you add it look for it
perfect video man! Many thanks!
Thank you !
I have the Maximus IX Apex... can def handle ocing a 9900k, despite a z270 chipset.
Yeah I would keep using 9 Apex, no point to upgrade.
I had one IX APEX with 8700K. You def should do the mod. Look for HWBOT APEX on google.
Muchas gracias por el aporte, me gustó tu video, quisiera saber si puedo hacer el mismo procedimiento en una placa Gigabyte GA-H270-Gaming 3 (rev. 1.0), te agradezco de antemano :D !!
I have an other model of asrock, asrock extreme 4 z170, actually works with i76700k at 4,7ghz of frecuency, the question is, i can be the process with this model of mobo? Thanks a lot
is this only for the Z170 or can it work with Z170-A also?
You still have the tool to download? It was removed by Google.

Works on msi z270 gaming plus??
@luumi will this also runs on mutan cpu such as i7 7700hq bga converted to desktop 1151?
I have an MSI z170M Mortar (MS-7972) -- it's the same procedure for any of the old boards, right? Just short the processor detect on the mobo and flash the BIOS with a patching tool?
Does this work with the MSI Bios files? 1A0, there is no Extract Body on the UEFI tool, so i Extract As Is and then use the old Coffee Lake Mod tool which doesn’t detect the bios. If this tool doesn’t work with the MSI Bios, then is there a direct way of editing the bios? My motherboard is MSI Pro Gaming Carbon Z170A.
please give the link for Automated BIOS mod tool , the link in the first page of winraid is dead .
some people are saying to use coffee time but where can i find the guide of coffee time the new coffe time is too much manul not automated .
@Luumi, would this work for a laptop using a full-fat Z170 chipset and a i7-6700k fully socketed ?
I have a MSI Z170-A Pro lying around.. i have concerns about its VRM.. do you think it can run a 9900K without OC?
Hey, thanks for the video. I have done all the steps but I'm getting stuck on code 62 or 91. Board Maximus ix extreme, with 9900K, I have tried many BIOSes, all give the same result. Any idea what to do?
Please tell me if there are the same pins on the maximus 10 apex board as in the video (16.08 minute), I need to flash the board through a flashback to start the notebook processor on it
I have the asrock z170 extreme7 plus and the nuvoton chip is the exact same as the one you read aloud (nct6791d) but there is no visible pin on the reverse side(front).
Also will i have to force flash one of my bios chips?
Hi Luumi. Do you know if it's possible to downgrade the microcode in a z270 motherboard to a skylake microcode from a z170 to enable non k overclocking? I imagine if it is possible I would lose kabylake support which is fine. I have an i5 6500 I'd like overclock on a gigabyte z270p-d3.
man can you reupload the files again its removed
Hello. Have a nice day. I have an Msi z170a gaming m7 motherboard. I want to install I9 9900k on this motherboard. Does it work? Do you have any knowledge about this topic? I will be glad if you help me.
if you have a 6th gen cpu installed can you flash the bios via usb normally with the bios usb option? is it still required to force the bios by shorting that option even if you do not use biosflashback
Maximus gene VIII user here
If you use the update function in BIOS you should not need to short anything.
So, just to clarify and see if i understood correctly: i have a 7700k in my Maximus VIII Gene, if i had to put a 9900k in it i could just download a biod update from asus site, modify it as shown in the video (should i still rename it tho?), and install the bios with the 7700k in it.
@@LaZeccaSulLupo Mod it and dont name it at all. Just use bios update in BIOS not flashback.
Did you attempt the mod? I am tempted to just upgrading to an 8700k on this z170 maximus viii cause b550 zen 2/3 and z490 10th gen intel are not looking so appealing tbh. There is a way to do this without soldering?
With RAM support up to 128GB, will 64GB run on a Z270i ITX motherboard with 2 slots only?
Hi. If i do this, can I still use 6600k till I get upgrade or will it not work with older CPU? :D
It should work fine with older CPU, or you could keep old bios on the other BIOS chip.
I have a spare Z170 mobo laying around. If I buy a Coffee Lake CPU, I might try it on that before modding my main Z270 board.
I'm in the same scenario. Did you ever try the mod, and which 8th or 9th gen cpu did you use?
I have Maximus IX Extreme and I cannot find Nuvoton or SKT_OCC pin physically on the MB or any picture on internet for it. Can you please help me @Luumi?
Hello, did you know what can I do with h310, because I have 7700k and I can't found new h210, b250, z270
coffee time mode works with HP motherboards with 6th gen cpu's?
Worked on my msi z270 with i3 9100f, all I did is download the bios, used coffeetime to create a bin file, put it in a formated usb, went to settings in the motherboard using the graphical interface I clicked on flash selected the bin file and clicked flash, removed the old cpu plugged the new one and all good to go.
Which method did you use to create a "socket occupied" state -- shorting the pads on the cpu, or the soldered point on the chipset?
@@ascendantMethEnjoyer i did not my mother board got a user interface and says upload flash or something as far as I remember so I just clicked upload
@@benx1326 Let me get this straight: you got the 9100f to run on your z270 board without doing the physical mod to the motherboard or cpu pads??

When i start a benchmark like Prime95 or Time Spy, the PC instan crashes :(. Are there any changes in the bios necessary? Many thanks for your help :D
Hi Max, did you follow this guide exactly?
If not, what steps did you take for modding your Gigabyte z170
@@ashihtaka Hi ashihtaka, thanks for your reply first :D No i was using a different guide because it seems to be a little bit easier. I´m using the tool CoffeeTime 0.99 to moddify the bios. To flash the bios im using the ch341 programmer. I also tryed to flash the bios via afudos and the gigabyte onboard function. But in most cases the bios wos not usable after flashing that methode. To get the mainboard back to live im bying the ch341 programmer 😅 I don´t know if there is any difference in this methodes. The System is booting and the 9900k was detected with all 8 cores. The performance (CPU-Z Benchmark) seems to be normal. But i think the temperatures were a little bit high. Sadly i was not able to check them under load, because the PC was crashing everey time. I think there is any voltage issue in the preseted bios functions. But maybe im totally wrong an i did any mistake while modding my bios. Iff it would be possible, i would be thankfull for a already modded bios version for my motherboard. To flash the bios i would use the ch341 programmer if thats ok 😅
Please tell me, if i connect occ with ground (for the z170m ocf) then i don't need to mod the cpu? Will it work? Will it work with engineering sample cpu too?

No you don't. Either method works
