what an amazing review. THIS is how it should be Not an hour slog through - but quite the opposite of the Tanares rulebook. to the point and super clear. thanks man.... I know this must have taken a very long time but trust me.... as a user: fully worth it
While also appreciating the length and level of detail you have in your long-form reviews, I really like this "bite-sized" review that gets to the point quickly, too! Plus it is really well-worded! Thanks!
You are quite welcome as always :) It's a balance right? Lately I've been trying to avoid really long form content. I might re-introduce it every so often when warranted, but the idea is no more 50 minute news and review videos :D I am hesitant to really say the extra 30 minutes adds enough value to warrant it :D
Michael, I believe you wrote this review out and then spoke it from your text. I prefer listening to you speaking extemporaneously, but I must say I prefer it only by a little. This was very well written, and a very clear review, and very well spoken. Plus I am looking forward to getting my $189 copy. Thanks.-Toby
Hey Michael, just a quick question for you. How far into the campaign did you get to play the game? I feel like it's always good to know how much of the experience you were able to get.
Somehow I forgot to watch this review. You've done a really good job of distilling down both the positives and negatives in a concise manner. Excellent work, and would love to see you do more stuff in this kind of style.
Really good review. A bit of a different style for you, and it worked well. A more scripted approach, but delivered in the natural conversational style that you do so well. Great stuff!
Excellent review. I love how this channel has matured. Great footage, great script and you covered everything I needed to hear. I’ve just backed this at the standee pledge but will probably bump up to the minis at some point.
The tutorial has a lot of back-and-forth with the rulebook, as there are a lot of specific rules we tried to teach you during those quests. After the tutorial, you will not find this to be an issue anymore.
This has been one of my favorite games. We played the Arena campaign a ton of times until TA came out and we are almost done with our first run through of the campaign and loved it. All of the changes they are making to the books are welcome. A few of the minis still could have been better or should have been updated, like Talessa, but hands down some of the best board game minis I've ever had. I'm glad you love this game too.
Arena REALLY surprised me. I went from figuring it was tacked onto a PvP game to finding it among my favorite campaigns ever. Tanares pretty much just improved most of my cons of Arena while retaining much of what made Arena so great to play. And I love the riddles/puzzles/etc!
Very nice review; great natural flow with really good polish 👍🏻 Arena/Tanares “luggage” is is my gaming room, but GH:JOTL solo campaign, and FH (4 pers) campaign are in full-swing…so, I guess I’m probably getting prepared for my retirement with a full room of gaming/painting! Great review. Love the length. I am tempted to get this, just do not know if it would actually ever get played. Considering the $189 pledge and those dragons.
Hey @King! One more time, great work! Your reviews continue to be some of the best around UA-cam. I wish that you have more time to do the reviews. Long live the KING!
Fantastic video. Opening scene with all the characters to select from was breathtaking in scope. It was a nice change of pace from your usual conversational approach but one that should be limited imo to those games at the top of your list that deserve such lustrous cinematography. Appreciate both the positive and negative criticisms as you see them for the game. Enjoy the channel immensely.
Thanks so much! That shot in particular took up quite a bit of time to set up (and then put up) as you can probably imagine, so I am glad to hear it accomplished its goal :)
One question, if you get a chance to reply. How do the extra dragons compare to the Elder Dragon? That’s the only one I’ve got and it was…pretty disappointing! Especially after looking at games like MH:W 😅
I'm really debating with myself about what I will buy on this kickstarter. I have the Core game, Tanares and the madness box. I really think that I don't "need" the 189 Dollar Penumbral Pack and Legendary Pack... But do I even need the boxes, if I don't own that much stuff... I don't know. In any case, I will get the upgrade pack and Forteller. These times are really hard on the wallet... Nexus Battle Arena Combat System is coming up with a new Crowdfund and so much more cool stuff 🙈
So, I will not be jumping onto this project, at all. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore Tanares Adventures. It may, in fact, be my Game of 2023. I just can't do another Dragori project. It's too much. Sure, too much stuff overall but also too much invested time, patience, loyalty, frustration and so on... When we finally got Tanares Adventures after years of waiting, delays, excuses and whatnot, most of us still didn't get Arena. Some hobbyists like me cobbled together the necessary components needed and wrestled through the Tutorial and, actually, that was kinda fun. But it's also just bad on Dragori's behalf. Why? Cuz we, trailblazers, who helped Dragori get to where they are now are 'rewarded' with an odd collection of boxes, a janky onboarding and an Arena-Tanares experience that doesn't align - which is all fine to be fully honest - but we're now asked to invest even more money and time to 'smooth out' the system? Why do first edition backers always get shafted this way? Yeah, no, I'm done with that. I dumped all my minis into one box, put the boards into a smaller one and the rest of the components into the Tanares Box and am calling it a day. I don't need even more stuff that I'll probably get to in my lifetime (painting and playing), after all, I still have the RPG lore books to enhance the experience. I actually like my 'broken game' as I now have come to see it. But hey, I wish those who get their stuff early 2024...or late...or in 2025/26 lots of fun discovering Tanares with their fancy sotrage boxes that almost fit everything. I'm not rewarding Dragori for that crap no more. 😆Peace.
Awesome review! As a two time returning backer and just backed for 35$ I will have everything except the Dragon collection. As I want my Bosses painted, it was just too much.
Good review. Looks interesting, especially coming from a D&D background. But I'm currently in the middle of ATO (with 2nd wave coming this fall) and Isofarian Guard. I also have Sleeping Gods, ISS Vanguard, Agemonia, Arydia and Kingdom Forlorn coming. Should I get it???
We’re going to wait for the new mode. But I have to say: Arena was great and Tanares looks awesome. It scaled up to 8 players easy and we were never bogged down
I haven’t found much on Tanares compared to other popular games out lately. Like Kings of Ruin, Oathsworn, ATO, etc. I haven’t played any of them and looking to grab one but have no direction. There’s so many coming out and they all sound so cool. Ugh I don’t want to spend $2000 on games to try that I’ll never ever finish all them. I spend way more than I should have on Middara already…
Coming here after the ultimate adventures release. I’m mixed on this game. I love the class system and character development, but I’m finding using the same board over and over to be quite boring. They do different mechanics to change the look aesthetically, but it still has the root board underneath. This is fine for a boss battler, but I feel as though Tanares wants to be a dungeon crawl without actually crawling through a dungeon. I gave this one 5 scenarios before packing it away out of boredom. I don’t necessarily have buyer’s remorse as I can use the minis for D&D and perhaps someone will homebrew a campaign that uses differing map tiles and not just overlays. But as it stands, this will be a shelf dust collector for a long while…
Am on the fence with this one, can anyone help explain a little more about the time constraint you are under and how it works. Generally I don't like games that have a timer and I need to rush and miss out things but not sure how it works here.
I would say most adventures are not time constrained, at least not in the "time is running out" sense. But I will say there is VERY little downtime, there are ALWAYS baddies on the board, and taking an extra round to get a heal off or pick up a chest will penalize you as you just gave the badies an extra turn of survival later. Ignoring a baddie will also penalize you with them getting extra damage in thier attacks. If you are looking for a dungeon CRAWL creeping through tunnels and sneaking up on a unaware group of orcs, you will not find it here. The text adventure is slow and choices can be considered, but once the swords are out on the gameboard its ****s to the wall unrelenting arrow flinging, spell slinging and axe splitting.
This was a great review! I was expecting to be tempted by the reprint, but not actually dive in...that is likely to change with all the praise it's getting, and the fact that they are listening to their backers who have played the game and actively addressing many concerns. Also, the theme is great, the minis look very qell done, and i love a combat heavy dungeon crawler. I especially love each player cannhave a team of heroes!!
I wish they delivered the game. Sadly hundreds of backers still dont know when they will get their stuff. Now I need to decide if I want more of 2 games (Arena and Tanares) and a rpg without being able to test even one of them.
I am very sorry that the game did not arrive yet for you. A great majority of our backers received it, but we are also astonished about how long the Europe delivery is taking. For this campaign, we are so sure of the changes that we are offering a 100% refund in case we delay more than 4 months after the estimated delivery date provided in the campaign (02/24). We changed our partnerships and our internal processes. And we are striving to improve, so this never happens again.
Nice review, maybe this time I'll keep my pledge 😜 but I'd like to ask if you think that PvP and/or minis are worth additional money vs just standees pledge is good enough? 🙃
IMO, if you have considered games like D&D Onslaught, you will get more from this at a lower price. I like the PvP, and we are playing a Warcry campaign at the same time. Over games like Onslaught or Warcry, you can play coop vs big bosses, or hack out an adventure with friends, or play all methods solo, even the standard PvP. If you get the Legendary box, there are 50+ heroes to mix and match and boards are fully customizable, never play the same game twice, unless you want to. :)
Any thoughts on the Standee Version? I'm getting the game but not sure should I get the standee or normal version. Standee version seem much more easy to store and table for my experience as from where I live, table space and storage space are usually very limited. But the one thing is the Standee Version have less content story wise, as it has 1 less campaign and no PvP. How much I'm missing if I go for the Standee Version?
Are the Legendary and Penumbral packs worth it? It appears in my limited research, they both give you more character types to play. Penumbral also gives a time traveling campaign to go back through a few missions you already did? And, of course, a bunch of miniatures. I just don't know if the miniatures are to supplement the current monsters (as in alternate poses) or if these are actually more monsters. And if more monsters, how do they integrate into the original campaign? Can you maybe explain these 2 packs in detail since they add so much to the cost of the game? EDIT: Also more PVP cards, which I'm not interested in.
I am also interested in this. I'm on the fence with which pledge level I want because I'm unsure of what extras are worth splurging on. My wallet can't keep up with everything 😥
Penumbral Pack was released originally tied to the RPG campaign, so it has another campaign, and the Penumbral monsters are exclusive to this pack (not just supplement the current monsters). All in all, you should join in the Tanares community if in doubt, as it is great. And for doubts, you can always pledge just 5USD to ask and have your questions there. Dragori is known for listening and having their backers close.
@@kanalune Same. I'm doing the essentials pledge and will continue to research by watching unboxing videos and reading more. When the pledge manager opens is when it really matters. That's when I'll adjust things.
I really wish I waited to pull the trigger on this. Its one of the rare cases where a game comes back to crowdfunding and costs less. I cant even name one off the top of my head. In this campaign it appears the legendary box and the new content is included which gives new players about a $200 savings compared to what Ill end up paying after late pledging the 5E campaign and now this one. $200! Im gonna do it. I have to do it, i need my kallax back lol but man, this is a tough pill to swallow
I'm sure I'm missing something. Maybe its just the new content thats given free here in comparison. It was 289 for the board games and 179 for the Miniatures and Cards 29 for the Mystics plus the Legendary Box but I did the PM add ons All In for 254 and I forget how much just the Legendary Box would have cost me. I ended up going All In All In because by the end of the pledge manager the RPG All In Without Minis stuff that was going for 259 would be included for just 100 more so went for that. With the exception of sleeves, extra boards, and plastic tokens, if I take out the 100 for the rpg stuff in my pledge it looks like I could have everything painted this time around instead of just the golden dragon and tarrasque.
@BobbyJuno Well that $289 probably included the Dragon Collection and Madness Box right? Those are not included with the current $189. Those 2 expansions are now another $89 and $69 respectively. Pretty sure you paid less back then.
Can you play this game sandbox like Massive Darkness 2? I like the minis, but don't care for huge campaigns. I only want to build my own levels and go from zero to hero in one gameplay then put back the game.
You can play one off quests. The game has a table in the manual to tell you what should be the heroes levels and items level to equip with to play the quest. But the main attraction of this is the overbranching campaign mode.
Thanks so much for the quick response and advice , going to pick the brains if the collective if you could only buy one between this one and league of dungoneers which would it be as i can only get one of them. Thanks in advance
I just received my stuff. And honestly i regret backing, it is just too much stuff. I'm considering selling my stuff and buy the standee version in the current ks. If I keep it, i will surely don't start it before the storage solution from the current campaign arrives.
It's been over 18 months since I received broken miniatures as part of my Tanares Adventures pledge. After some initial emails, I've been completely ignored and haven't received a reply since May 2023, let alone my minis. This is a disgraceful way to treat your backers.
Even though everyone says this is pretty much the gold standard when it comes to campaign games, dang. $1000+ is too much for me. I'm an All-In-er so I'd have to go with the cosmetic option if I were to pledge.
They haven't delivered. I'm still waiting to receive a single thing I've ordered and Dragori's customer service is terrible. I'm chalking this up as a mistake for me, probably won't ever play it before selling it and won't be supporting Dragori again.
Well the problem is the people that did got it wanted fixes hence why the new kickstarter. If I remember correctly though they will deliver to those they didn't yet.
Sorry to hear that. =( We had a huge problem with Europe delivery, and we will not do this mistake again. For this campaign, we are so sure of the changes that we are offering a 100% refund in case we delay more than 4 months after the estimated delivery date provided in the campaign (02/24). We changed our partnerships and our internal processes. The games left the factory at the end of last year, so it is also unbelievable to us that they were not delivered yet. All the products will be delivered, rest assured.
@@CheddahSlammer the problem is I didn't get the stuff I ordered, Dragori knows it, they have it in a warehouse, but they don't care and aren't taking any steps to actually ship my stuff to me.
When I watcher the playthrough the jumping between books and seeing the person being confused killed the interest. To give it a thought I need to see a more streamlined version
Hey KOA! Do you write the music in your outro? I know you’ve mentioned things about music before. If not and you’d be interested in a change up ever let me know! I’d love to help! We have some sweet stuff just sayin…haha it would be an honor to have 5-10 seconds of something in your videos if you like it 🤘🏼
Yeah, the rules are mega fiddly until you get used to them. I am constantly having to fight off urges to go all-in on the new campaign though. So much FOMO! ;)
Honestly, I prefer videos where I can see you talking compared to this where you appeared to be reading from a script. Otherwise thanks for your thoughts.
I appreciate the feedback! Indeed I am doing my reviews a bit differently now now compared to the rest of my videos. I really value your thoughts on it and I'll keep gauging general preference too. This is only my third time doing so.
Bit more freestyle speech and less reading text please. This in my opinion the worst review you did ever. You talk positively, but there is no fire and power! To me this is not you to me. Only free speech from now on. Who cares about page 7 of the technical document…
I'll keep working on it! See if it sticks. Incidentally the two comments before said this is one of my best reviews. I hear you though as well. If nothing else I imagine my lack of sleep comes through a bit in this one ( I worked all night on the review) - sorry about that!
@@TheKingofAverage the review itself is still great. It‘s more that it feels that your reading it of a teleprompter that is on 0.75 speed. It might be the lack of sleep as you say that ate the fire and energy away. Trust me I know my 2 month old sometimes likes to train his voice for death metal bands the whole night long, so I feel you! Nothing you would need to excuse yourself for. This was just what I felt and not an objective review of ypur review. I just like it a lot when you speak about games with full emotions on. Still board game channel no. 1 for me also on 0.75 energy level. Keep the great work up your highness :)
Good video, but I miss the energy you have when you are before the camera. Sounded very scripted and the pro/cons were to quick away at the end. You should go back to the old format, where you listed and explained pro‘s and con‘s.
Thanks a ton for the feedback! I can certainly extend the pros/cons (I assumed people would just pause but perhaps that shouldn't be assumed). I suspect you're gleaning the fact that I worked all night to get this to you guys day of launch, so to say I was tired is an understatement - so sorry about that! I'm sure that affected the normal energy level and perhaps even somewhat my overall delivery of points. I'll continue to try this out a few more times and see how I can progress with it, so keep the feedback coming!
@@TheKingofAverage Thats good to know, hovering over the all in pledge and hoping its not going to end up being a mistake (like stormsunder might have been!)
You do a lot of negative review about late ks, bad communication, various problem in delay, errors etc . And for this just and elegy ? The worst ks i did ( and i did a lot of terrible still waiting )
We own our mistakes, and we are sorry for that. Both our communication and delays will be fixed.
@@michaelalves8900 tbh i did the all in arena/Tanares, miniatures , various expansions and this new campaign doesn't offer something good for us, just some stretch goal extra so we can after paying a lot for the previous campaign have the game still incomplete and lacking of something , or get those last things paying 50$ for 2 empty boxes and 39 for the errata (plus shipping, plus vat). It really seems like a " well you did wrong to pledge us before ".
@@aspattatasa The new books are not required for you to play, so rest assured that your game is not incomplete. We are offering the update kit at price cost, but I understand your problem with shipping and vat. =( We have more stretch goals that maybe will bring the value up for you. I hope we can make it seem worth, and be sure that our idea is not to displease our backers, but there is so much on our plates on all sides. Some backers pressuring us to change the books, others saying that they clearly prefer the old version. Some people asking for addons they missed, and others blaming us for making a new campaign too soon. We are sorry that we could not find a viable solution that made everyone happy. We will strive to to better in the future.
This is actually a long-standing stance of mine and something I'm sure is worth repeating, but I review board games wholly separate from their campaign. I'm looking strictly at the game itself with the only thing taken into consideration from the campaign being the price.
I worked literally overnight (I still have not slept yet) to bring this video to you guys day of release. I was worried I wouldn't have enough time with the game so put some extra time into doing a bit more, especially since I did have a fair amount of negatives. As this is late (for reviewing the game, though in time for the campaign) I won't be getting much ad money off this video. So you may thank my Patrons and YT members for paying for this one. And yes, obviously there was never even a conversation about payments of any kind between me and Dragori Games, and over the years there never has been. If there was, I'd make it very apparent :)
I know that watching the video is optional when writing about something, but then you can't be upset if everyone points out the huge mistake you're making.
Really like the fact that you titled and thumbnailed this in a way that doesn't feel "clickbait-y". Feels responsible and respects your audience
Thanks man I appreciate it!
@@TheKingofAverage loved the game shots. no offense. but watching people talk gets tiring
Sooo well said! I am so tired of clickbait. Demeans the topic and the creator and also makes me immediately dislike the video.

I am really enjoying your latest reviews
Woah 3:45 I totally thought I was looking at Ultima Online for a second there. Half expected to see a nostalgic GUMP in the corner! LOL
LOL! I thought literally the same thing! Reminded me of a slew of MMO's I played back when. Ultima, Lineage, Runescape.
Great review, and I love the style of how you spoke. Well done.
I really appreciate it thank you!
Great review again KoA! Quick question tho, for a solo player that plays MP only very occasionally, would you pick this or oathsworn overall? Like factoring gameplay, ease to solo, story, ease to setup tear down etc.
I'm interested in this also
You are kind of selling me on Odalin. I wasn't familiar with these designers. And Tanares sounds appealing. Now I'm more confident about their new project.
Though I wonder how it relates, of course.
Chronicles of drunagor vs Tanares? Which would rather have if you could only one? Ease of play and set up?
Love the new shorter review format.
I love Arena and I haven't yet broken into Adventures. Other than to check contents. Looking forward to starting a new campaign once our current home brew HeroQuest campaign is done.
This was helpful! I want to spend the 800+ to get the deluxe edition on kickstarter 🤣

If you are on the fence do chip in to back as the day 1 Dragon gift is ending soon. You can decide later if you want to drop / cancel the pledge
Great review - very different to your usual style but still really enjoyed it
Really glad to hear that thank you!
So looking forward to this one...
Hey @King! One more time, great work! Your reviews continue to be some of the best around UA-cam.
I wish that you have more time to do the reviews. Long live the KING!
Thanks so much! :) Agreed! More time to play games would be VERY welcome :D
If ican pick 2 out of 3 between
Tainted grail kings of ruin
Tanares or aeon trespass
Which would you pick since all 3 are available for late pledge
Another great video. I have the game and love it too. Your video makes me want to play it now :)
Awesome video! Well done. If I didn’t have 2 campaign games still waiting to fulfill I’d be jumping for sure.
But then you can't make a "Top 3 of my favorite campaign games." Especially if you're leaving out what could be your Top 1.
It's important to know your limits I think, so sounds like a smart move for you.
Fantastic video. Opening scene with all the characters to select from was breathtaking in scope. It was a nice change of pace from your usual conversational approach but one that should be limited imo to those games at the top of your list that deserve such lustrous cinematography. Fantastic! This is review heaven for anyone checking out the new campaign and wanting to know what’s up!
One question, if you get a chance to reply. How do the extra dragons compare to the Elder Dragon? That’s the only one I’ve got and it was…pretty disappointing! Especially after looking at games like MH:W 😅
This was a super quality video, thank you. I don't think it'll be for me, but it's fun getting to know what has people excited.
Nice review. I like the voiceover style compared to just talking in front of the camera while the components lie flat on table.
I'm really debating with myself about what I will buy on this kickstarter. I have the Core game, Tanares and the madness box.
😆Peace.
Wow, great work !
Thanks so much! :)
Awesome review! As a two time returning backer and just backed for 35$ I will have everything except the Dragon collection. As I want my Bosses painted, it was just too much.
Curious how much or how many plays did the extra bosses gave? Thx. I was wondering if it's worth getting the extra dragons and monsters
@@goldsmeeth2771 I bought them for the look :D 3-4 scenarios in so have not met any "serious" Bosses yet
Great review! So, this or ATO?
Or Gloomhaven second ed, or oathsworn
Really struggle with which pledge level to get with the one
Amazing review, thank you! I’m very unclear as to what certain boxes add to the game, for example the Penumbral Pack, do you think it’s worth having?
Good review. Looks interesting, especially coming from a D&D background. But I'm currently in the middle of ATO (with 2nd wave coming this fall) and Isofarian Guard. I also have Sleeping Gods, ISS Vanguard, Agemonia, Arydia and Kingdom Forlorn coming. Should I get it???
We’re going to wait for the new mode. But I have to say: Arena was great and Tanares looks awesome. It scaled up to 8 players easy and we were never bogged down
what new mode?
@@Krplun the kickstarter campaign they released
Great review. It was succinct but included detailed analysis, and the footage of the game components was more helpful than watching a talking head.
and koa when will you find the time to play a single session of tanares
Since i'm getting the big boxes and new books I'm telling myself I'm shelving it until then to play more :D
Good balanced review
Super awesome👍
@@paulharper7185 thanks
Any thoughts on the Standee Version? I'm getting the game but not sure should I get the standee or normal version. Standee version seem much more easy to store and table for my experience as from where I live, table space and storage space are usually very limited. But the one thing is the Standee Version have less content story wise, as it has 1 less campaign and no PvP. How much I'm missing if I go for the Standee Version?
I believe i read that they are looking into addin the other content as a standee version as add-ons
Yeah and I late backed the last campaign and that cost another 45 too, so I’m def groaning
No way this costs less now than even previous late pledges. The Legendary Box is selling for $139 on its own...
Jesus Christ 😂😂 0:04
Hah! Right? I missed a few too lol
Don't know if it has been asked but do I need arena to play Tanares or is it standalone?
You do need Arena.
Yes Arena is required unless you get the new standee version which I believe acts as a standalone.
The Ultimate Edition Box includes Arena + Tanares on the new campaign =D
Oh man if all in includes the fancy painted version then yeah that's pretty darn expensive :D It's a good painting though at least :)
The Gold still glitters even if you just get the Ultimate TA and not the all in. Thats already over 100 minis and 1000 cards.
The Tanares campaign is almost a third of the way to equaling the Gloomhaven funding total... hmmm.
Sorry man that does suck :( I hope you get your game soon!
Sorry to hear that. =(
We had a huge problem with Europe delivery, and we will not do this mistake again.
We have some sweet stuff just sayin…haha it would be an honor to have 5-10 seconds of something in your videos if you like it 🤘🏼
Email me! It's not any music I made, sadly I have no talent in that area, I just listen to lots 😀
Wow. This and Aeon's Trespass keeping you busy enough?
Incredibly >.< 10th edition 40K too
Yeah, the rules are mega fiddly until you get used to them. I am constantly having to fight off urges to go all-in on the new campaign though. So much FOMO! ;)
Dang that’s one hell of an endorsement..
I agree, I appreciate the more "freestyle" approach than this.
Is this a paid for video? Its high praise from the king of doom and gloom otherwise!
nothing paid at all. I just like games too :D
We have more stretch goals that maybe will bring the value up for you.
How much did they pay you for this?
I doubt they would need to. He's been up front about enjoying Arena since the beginning
Pretty sure he's made it clear he will always disclose paid for videos. If you don't see any mention then their isn't a need to assume.
Great review. Loved the format. Very clear, with positives and negatives to give balance. I liked it very much, quality work done. Thks.
I know that watching the video is optional when writing about something, but then you can't be upset if everyone points out the huge mistake you're making.
