I think it's an illusion due to the camera perspective.
The lack of pipe smoking is seriously hampering scientific progression.

One of the problems I can hear.
The old lab had wood which dampens sound, the new one reflects it.
There is no sound dampening at all in that lab, you can hear everyone everywhere.
The Organic and Inorganic lab coat bit was interesting.
+LordOfDays I do wonder if red and blue might have been better colour choices, though. Less room for colour-blindness confusing things.
Roxor128 The reason they didn’t use blue was because they’re used by the Physical Chemist Lectures who’s in a completely different lab since they need more computers and other electronics than the Organic/Inorganic labs do

Underrated comment
I just moved to the UK about 6 months ago and I don't live very far from Nottingham.
I cannot possibly tell you how proud and excited one can be after coming from a country when the most exciting teaching consists of writing stuff that you don't understand in your notebook.
I'm currently working as an IT Support Analyst at Birmingham City University and the way you teach stuff to your students here is absolutely mind blowing to me.
Back in my country, we are limited to 90's, even 80's textbooks and materials/lab equipment and a simple "professor dictates - student writes" system. Practical activities - ZERO. Things like modern journalism and social media marketing don't even officially exist and are done for free by some people, as there's no legal way of turning them into jobs.
You are great people who do great things.

Professor, I don't think I have the IQ to hang in there with your students, but I bet it'd be fun and interesting to have you as a teacher. Your attitude/demeanor reminds me of a man I considered my favorite teacher. Your new lab, figuratively, is "The Bomb". Nice digs. Your crew obviously loves it. Congrats.

+Azivegu Well actually organic chemists are in more danger. Every organic compound is flammable so a fire is much more likely as an organic chemist. Beyond that, both inorganic and organic chemists deal with toxic compounds and high concentrations of strong acids/bases.

What if a student is red/green colourblind?
he needs a Paul Revere buddy to tell him "The redcoats are coming!"
Those coats are meant to be brightly coloured and easy to see, even if you are colour-blind. Colour-blindness is only noticeable when the colours are darker.

You guys inspired me to pursue chemistry a few years ago and now that I'm applying to colleges I'm also applying to Nottingham ("also" because I live in Florida so I'm mainly applying to colleges in the US). I hope I get in and get to study there. It looks like a lot of fun.

I worked in chem labs from 1970 to 1989. I never saw safety glasses. One lab used to get over 40 centigrade in the summer because of the furnaces inside it and we kept some of the chemicals in a refrigerator and turned up for work without shirts.
Those fume cupboards with back windows were a cool feature! But no Bunsen burners?

When I couldn't tell the difference between the red and green lab coats I was reminded of the trouble I had in chemistry class due to being colour-blind to red. It made me wonder if you have ever had to make accommodations for colour-blind students. While about 1 in 10 men have some deficiency, many don't even know until they encounter something requiring close colour matching like litmus paper.
This is great to see! I usually dont like commenting on this sort of matter, but I think a big detail that was left out of the newer lab was the mix of both male and female researchers!

I had a glassware box with almost 45 items, ( erlenmeyer, measuring cups, pipets, petridishes, etc) it needed to be tidy every friday, and if something was missing I had to sign a form. But we never had to pay a lot. only 2 or 3 cents per item. It was not ment as a fine, but it gave some awareness of the items cost money to make
Some of the labs at my high school had fixed plumbing but could otherwise be rearranged as needed, though we didn't have wheels on the tables and I never actually saw one get rearranged.
What a beautiful lab! I can really appreciate architecture with well designed allowances.
Such a large, sophisticated and well-equipped lab must cost an eye watering amount of money to install! I'm envious- it sure beats what I am able achieve in my 'amateur' lab on a constrained budget. I can only hope that I'll win the lottery one day!
Those are equipped amazingly from the perspective of someone from Romania. Always liked chemistry and biology, but all i was thought in school was trying to figure out how those hexagons (idk how they're called in english) work using a specific pattern and without logic explained behind it. Kind of sad looking back at it now. With something at least like 10% of this kind of support, i might have ended up a chemist, like i always wanted, since i was like 4.
i really, really enjoyed this one. as someone who never took any chemistry but am constantly fascinated by the world around us, would love to a bit more on the how of how chemistry is taught. thanks for the peek, and great to see the prof. among the students. :)

Fantastic labs indeed. Some months ago I had the oportunity of taking chemistry class on a lab that not changed much since it was built in the 1930's.
The pictures look almost identical to my old school's labs. Well and the ones at university too, but those were much more messy. The similarity is even stronger when you have the new labs in the video as a total opposite. Oh and we had to pay for our glassware too.
This automatic fumehood window is amazing, it's the most useless automatization I've ever seen, but I need one!

My uni lab resembled the photo and that was in 1996! When I got to industry the fume hoods looked more like the modern ones in this video.

When I was in chemistry class we had the old lab where you had the water spigot that poured nearly directly onto the electrical socket right by the gas supply
I think it's awesome that he keeps wearing what many would consider a damaged tie because it tells a story.
At the University of Bielefeld, where I am currently studying chemistry, we have to pay for our broken glassware ^^

I went to a Hungarian facility making a pharmaceutical product. On the wall was an old photo of a man in a suit and tie, bowler hat, with his dog by his side, lit cigarette in an ashtray, and mouth pipetting a chemical. Probably turn of the last century.

I've always wondered what the different coloured lab-coats meant!! Now I understand why they're needed. Their labs are HUGE :O
Up until about 3 years ago, when it flooded, I worked on an old cement analytical lab...
It was *identical* in all but size!
And still ran perfectly.
We had orange lab coats (awful for titration, for obvious reasons methyl orange!!) and wooden benches... It was a temporary building that mutated into permanence!
In fact, that lab in which I work presently, was flooded by the same flood (the tidal surge in the UK) and before then we had wooden benches (permanently draped in pig mats) and porcelain sinks!!
I vividly remember heaving a christmas hangover into one about 4 years ago!
"cooking" quick cups of coffee on the 900 degree furnace and shooting pipettes across the lab in full blown pipette wars!
So professional...
I miss those days...

I was wondering what specific plastic the wash basins are made out of, so I can suggest this to my professor. I figure they have to be relatively inert to work in a chem lab and not get eaten through. If they're teflon though, they're super expensive.

There should really be gas for experiments that NEED actual gas (reduction of copper oxide in a boiling tube with a small 'jet' blown into the end is one example)... or are such things so 'basic' they're not done? Or would you use a gas generator of some kind?

I work in a research lab with the same setup.
If you need gas for a reaction you use a compressed bottle of it, either directly or you fill a balloon.
But actually needing gas is quite rare, with the exception of nitrogen as an inert atmosphere. That's still on tap.
I want to study chemsitry. Let's do this!

+Justin Koenig Get the books that your lab training is based on. Then do what's written in there. For the lectures, take notes and try to get old exams from your Prof, they are lazy and ask the same stuff everytime. That's enough for Bachelor, at least.
Say goodbye to freetime and don't expect an easy student life.
You will be in the lab until 6-7pm, come home, work on your protocols, sleep, go to lecture, work in the lab.
And when you don't have to work in the lab you are writing protocols all the time. Without pc obviously.
Chemistry is probably the most time consuming subject in science. You have to be very sure that you love it and that you wanna go far. A bachelor chemist is entirely useless and even master isn't the end. At least here in Germany 85% of chemistry students finish with their doctorate.
