    Hi Jordan, I've been a radio mechanic myself for 38 years, I enjoy watching you repair various things, now that you're sitting with that sony tape recorder from the 90s, are you're thinking the same as me, that it was all just poorly made in the 90s, just to see how poor they made a flywheel compared to the old ones from the 70s and 80s.
    thank you for the good videos you make, it makes me happy every time you make a new one, by the way your workshop table etc is like watching mine, that's just how it looks in a real workshop :-)

    Thanks, Jordan. Your video kept one TC-We305 out of the landfill. Instead, it's serving up music I put onto tape more than forty years ago.

    Thank you for making this video! My partner bought a used player at a flea market for $20, and when we got it home, we first assumed it was broken. Before getting rid of it, I decided to see if there might be an easy fix and came upon your video. With an additional investment of $13 on ebay for belts and about an hour of time, my partner thinks I'm a hero, and we're enjoying our stash of thrift store cassettes. : )

    Thanks for an excellent video, good camera angles, etc. Very clear. I fixed my deck as the belts had turned into goo after many years of non-use. I don't have the meters/scopes to check speed but it sounds about as good as I remember pre CD times.

    Nice simple deck.
    To set the high speed dubbing usually many of these decks has a test point you need to short to ground in play mode (this will place the motor in high speed), and set the speed.
    I also think that some decks will require to set the high speed first.

    Gooey belts! I hate when that happens! That Sony deck, both from the electronic and mechanical perspectives is almost commercial grade in terms of the heavy duty nature of the components. I can really see why it was so reliable! The electronics are spaced out and they are a excellent mix between integrated circuit and discrete components.

    I had a similar deck found in hard rubbish - same tanishin like mechanisms - only mine was branded sherwood. There must have been a string of these sold by several manufacturers. I rebelted mine, but even with new belts W&F was excessively high and in the end I retired it to the parts bin.

    I used to have one, but I got rid of it and replaced with my Technics RS-B11W cassette deck from 1985. I had it a long time ago where it originally came with the owner’s owner with a copyright of 1996, but that has to be a 1996 model.

    There are American tires made in the 40s, 50s and 60s still around. Though not really safe to drive on, can look and feel and otherwise be indistinguishable from a newly made tire. These belts are from the 1990s!!! Less than 30 years. These tires were stored every bit as badly, probably worse as they were left outside. If you don't believe me about the tires, search youtube for "My Classic Tire"

    32:25 You might want to check the pressure pad on the test tape, that can cause a dropout on one channel. These tapes are getting quite old by now. That seems the most plausible cause.

    This video helped me a ton to replace the belts. Thank you! Unfortunately, it seems like Deck A is not connected -- it spins and runs just fine, but no sound and nothing on the meters/the tape counter doesnt spin. Looking through the service manual now, and feeling pretty lost -- reflowed the traces from deck A, but this had no effect. Ever run into this?

    • @JordanPier
      @JordanPier  Рік тому

      Look for a small leaf switch that interacts with the play lever. When you press play the switch disengages thr audio muting.

    • @ilchymis4000
      @ilchymis4000 Рік тому

      @JordanPier whoa! Would that be in front by the button itself? Never saw any mention of a mute switch!! I see the two in the back of the unit, I was able to move them and they seem to be functioning normally. There's a pause button one on the inside, cant tell if that's working or not, but it does pause the tape.

    • @ilchymis4000
      @ilchymis4000 Рік тому

      Well, I scrubbed both leaf switches on Deck A in the back and sprayed them with a little contact cleaner. No movement on the meter yet. I'll try reflowing the switches tomorrow. Checked the service manual, and those were the only two switches I could find on Deck A

      Make sure the heads are thoroughly clean. Qtips and alcohol until nothing comes off. Make sure you're using the appropriate settings for the tape you're using.

    I have a problem, do you have a video about how to fix a deck sony tc-we405 does not lower the heads, and does not allow to read tapes? I managed to remove the tape very carefully so as not to damage the mechanism, however the tape was not tangled as I thought at the beginning, it is the head system that does not lower when stopping stop or another key, which does not allow to put another cassette

    Dear sir how are you?
    Your video was very helpful and thankyou for providing. I am having a double deck cassette tape recorder. Recently i have replaced the pinch roller and we have zero availability of tape belts here hence i approached O rings manufacturer to manufacture Viton O rings for dynamic application by giving original belt for reference. They made the same with high quality rubber product and it is working extremely well. No cracks or expansion or disfigurement happen till now. But my machine is giving a slight wow effect during playback. The wow increased when i change the pinch roller and put back the old one. The pinch rollers are new and unused but i believe it they have slight irregularity in the shape but it is not identical. Please drop your suggestion how to eliminate the wow effect. Thankyou sir.

    • @JordanPier
      @JordanPier  3 роки тому

      Belts are really the only solution to wow and flutter problems. Orings do not substitute for belts. The constant change and roll of the ring as they travel on the pulley cause this. The surface wears unevenly and causes wow and flutter.
      Precision molded belts must be used if this is to work correctly in the long term

      @@JordanPier Thankyou sir. Ofcourse the belts have good precision and the original ones came with the machine lasted upto 6 years. The replacement belts with the same size came only for few months and after that it started to get cracks and broken completely. I was supposed to open the machine often and at one point the belts were no longer available in the market. Desperately i went to get the o rings. Please give me a link where i can get original durable belts. The o rings gives 95 percentage good playback but the little WOW is still present. The recorder is Philips RR898/00 Stereo double deck cassette tape recorder. Thankyou for your reply sir.

    Hello Jordan. My Kenwood KT-1100 sd bought 12 years ago worked fine and 2 years ago started only to work after the power was lit on (no display lighting) after 5 minutes. Then some months later ionly after 1 hour in the current, then like magic it suddenly came to life. Now last month I tried it again after a 1 year rest and after 4 hours nothing. Could you help me in a diagnosis please? Thanks. My KT-1100 and my Rotel 760 B from one moment to the other there is no tuning, only rush (white noise). Thanks a lot and I learn electronics through your videos :-)

    • @JordanPier
      @JordanPier  3 роки тому

      In both cases check your power supplies against a schematic. Given the Kenwood was time related it's likely dying capacitors in the regulator circuit.
      The Rotel is not getting any voltage to the oscillator - which is the circuit that helps tune the frequencies. This, again could be a power supply issue - or a failure of the oscillator itself. However without a schematic and a meter to verify you cannot know.
