Karang -The Only Island in Manipur's Loktak Lake

Not many people knows that Karang island of Loktak lake was once a safe haven of insurgents of Manipur. It took the security forces ( both Army and Manipur Police) a thorough planning to conduct operations and flush out the insurgents without any collateral damage. Operation Summer Storm launched in 2008/9 was the highlight of the major operation under taken.
Since then, the area is now very peaceful and people in and around Thanga, Karang Island and the vicinity have adapted to a better way of life by resorting to hospitality business apart from fishing. Tourism is really picking up and there are many home-stay accommodations in and around the lake.
Karang Island is approximately 2 sq km and has a population of about 3500. My visit was to do with opening of a Police Outpost and I had the opportunity to interact with the local club members and ward members who requested me to open at the soonest.
