Everyone knows that’s her signature hug but I think if she does not get a good read from her opponent she does not extend a hug. The one Coco beat in the WTA finals barely even shook hands with Coco. She’s a nasty piece of work from what I’ve observed.

That was a harsh tumble. I’m sure she took an ice bath. We’ll see if she runs with a hitch the next she plays. That 1st set they played was really good.
Coco has the tendency to play down to her competition. I hope for her sake because she is playing a lower ranking player she does not get mentally caught up on that again. Serena & Iga do not fall into that trap at all.
Agreed, she’s hitting through on her FH more, not so loopy and her serve is improved, of course she hit 9 DF’s primarily going for more than normal on her 2nd serve because her opponent was hitting the ROS early putting pressure on her.
not yet, far too many better players out there now this year. she is where she is because of the problems of injuries that waylaid the truthful top 5. CoCo and Jessica Pegullar will be filtered into their realistic positions in the top 10

I’m a huge Coco fan & I’m glad she got the win, but I watched this match live & Zhang pushed my girl Coco especially that first set, but as always Coco problem solved & that’s what makes her that top notch player💪🏽
Personal opinion, she played down to her competition. It was a trap match for her & she almost fell prey to it. Iga & Serena does not ever get caught into that mode. Hopefully Coco’s staff will coach that up. She was clearly the more talented one but she almost blew that 1st set. Almost as if she was just going through the motions because she knew she could. Just my opinion. She’s going to definitely need to stay out of her own way.
@@imhereforitall9218 A little revisionism there. Serena was the GOAT but she quite often had very sluggish starts against players she should have dispatched with ease. Until the last couple years of her career, she usually found a way to turn it round, as Gauf did here.
Just my opinion, the only 1 that can beat Coco in the singles for the United Cup is Coco. In the 1st set imo her nerves were getting the best of her. It’s almost as if she’s putting too much pressure on herself. Her opponent played well. In the 2nd set Coco played much better & her opponent on her heels the entire time. C’mon Taylor please beat your opponent so you all will not have to play the mixed doubles. Is that how that works?
I'm definitely a fan of Coco Gauff but this seemed like yet another case of winning ugly. Thank goodness for her fighting spirit, athleticism and backhand. Really wish she would learn to volley better and take the net more. It would shorten her points and time on the court.
She definitely wasn't timing the ball well for some reason. Lots of effort but most shots weren't that powerful and her serve was fairly weak. I was hoping to see her start to shine but it was disappointing. She's clearly been working out a lot and is stronger than she was but still, too many shots going back half length to her opponent's forehand like a practice shot. If she just opens up and goes for it, stops playing for the error and goes for her shots she'd be really hard to beat. I was hoping it was going to be this year but she's still got work to do. Her defence is still mighty however.
Congratulations Coco. Congratulations champ 🏆. She looked a bit tired the whole match while the Chinese lady was firing from all sides. I hope playing both singles and mixed doubles is not adversely affecting her energy.
That was simply because Peng was making her RUN all over with her power shots with really good angles. Unfortunately for her she is 35 and couldn't maintain it for the entire match.
Coco played very safe or smart? A lot of counterpunching while Zhang seemed to use the whole court. Hit it back to Zhang a few too many times whichbwould bea problemwith better players...but coco is a superior player and athlete so she prevailed
Gauf has never been an overly talented player - she does make good use of all she has got, to her credit. The one big one she did win , on route to pulling it off - it was her defence that made her stand out. You can see glimpes of it here on show against a hot opponent.
Although i did expect no guff Gauff to ultimately prevail, the first set was disturbingly too close for comfort! If i was Gauff, I would get rid of half that wig, make it a lot shorter to reduce distractions.its heavy and loose and swings around in all directions, even when tied. less distraction, more focus.
