  • Relative clauses are dependent clauses that use relative pronouns to modify another noun in a sentence. There are restrictive (Defining) and non-restrictive (Non defining) relative clauses. There are also specific relative pronouns that need to be used, and this as well as other details are explained in this video.

    Your lectures are very pleasant to watch and listen to, the younger "teachers" are more flimsy and often wander away into irrelevant areas.

    I watched all your videos here. Your UA-cam channel is the best. I got fully admitted to study my master degree in the US. I was in Iraq when I was writing comments to you. I want to say thank you. I appreciate your help.

    Thank you for sharing these wonderful videos for free. BTW, I think the sentence-South Africa is where most of the diamonds are mined- is a noun clause (completment) rather than relative one. Am I right?

    • @WritingBetter
      @WritingBetter  4 місяці тому

      Thank you for your comment.
      Yes, you are correct that the sentence (South Africa is where most of the diamonds are mined.) uses the phrase as a noun clause.
      The second sentence example in the video uses the phrase as a relative clause.
      I hope that clears up any confusion you might have had.

      Thank you for your suggestion.
      I do have another video about modal verbs that you might also watch.

      However, are you asking about sentences such as:
      The storm that could destroy the area is getting closer.
      The person who would replace the manager had not arrived yet.

    Hello Mam,
    Why is there a comma between 2000 and when @7:46?

    • @WritingBetter
      @WritingBetter  Рік тому

      This is another example of how we use a comma to emphasize information in a sentence. In this case it is separating a non-defining relative clause.

    What about the adverb "how"?

    • @WritingBetter
      @WritingBetter  Рік тому +1

      The relative adverbs are "where," "when," and "why." A relative adverb is an adverb that begins an adjective clause. We do not use the adverb “how” in this way.

      @@WritingBetter Thank you very much for your interaction, but how about "how" in this example?
      This is how I solved the math problem.
