  • Journalist, author and political commentator Anand Giridharadas has made quite a name for himself ruffling the feathers of the global elite - an elite of which he is ashamed to be a part.
In his acclaimed book Winners Take All, Anand offers a scorching analysis of the self-styled change-makers who he believes only succeed in propping up a system that favours their interests - giving from one pocket while filling the other, with wealth acquired via a rigged economy. He vilifies the billionaire philanthropists who set themselves up as champions of humanity while propping up the broken system that put them at its top.
For this special Meaning Spotlight event we invited award-winning Guardian journalist Aditya Chakrabortty to ask Anand to explain and expand upon the arguments he puts forward in his book.

The anti-government idea was promoted was a very well funded advertising campaign that was sustained for decades, grinding down the power and effectiveness of our government and at the same time telling Americans (drumbed down by modern tv & tech) that "government is bad" and "the only thing that can save us is business".

The oligarchs and corporations have been playing the very long game with their extremely slow moving soft coup ever since FDR stuck his foot in their asses. If you take away our government in dribbles at a time, the public won't realize what is happening until it's too late. We are the proverbial frog in the pot and it is rigorously boiling and 2 seconds from "too fucking late" at this point.

Anand's critique of the rich is directed towards those who exploit labor and exploit "the market", consumers, and scarcity - as well as what he regards as the "exploitation of progress". I figure Anand's wealth was achieved from the publication of his books and from his speaking tours. The exploitation chain in book publishing is limited.

Your suggestions show that you do not know how federal money actually works. Although we definitely need to tax the wealthy to remove much of their wealth, that is NOT because the federal govt needs their money in order to "pay for" anything, it is done so that the rich cannot buy political power as they have in the past 5 decades since they very successfully hijacked our government.

Covid 19 has given me time I would not normally have and I have been using a great deal of it watching Anand's videos and reading his books. I must say that I am both impressed with and refreshed and energized by what he has to say as well as by the experiences he cites in support of his ideas. "Like breathing pure oxygen" may be an overworked phrase but it is nonetheless the physical sensation i've experienced while familiarizing myself with Anand Giridharadas's ideas and opinions. I am halfway through "Winners Take All" and as someone who has opted to be one of the losers in rejection of so-called "winner" values I am finding it a remarkably apt description of where we are in America and how precisely we got there.

If you love the game of soccer, you won't hate the game just because you have toddlers playing it, you change the players - same with government. I think I would clarify that it is not politics as a whole that is broken in America as politics is a discussion of ideas, but the electoral process is broken with gerrymandering, bribary, fraud, and conflicts of interest running rampant even in the high courts. At the very least it seems a Declaration of grievances and constitutional convention might be the only electoral lever that still works....is it worth putting our efforts into that basket, or the revolutionary one? @ Anand has stated that he left out the solutions and talked about culture only for a reason. He wanted us to come up with the solutions or legislature. The FD Roosevelt administration came up with numerous solution some of which are enjoyed to this day like social security, unemployment insurance, Glass Steigal, government emp[oyment programs, above 90% taxes on the rich, and many more measures to pull us out of a depression. Your ahistorical non action solution is why all of the programs initiated was able to be rolled back in the first. You probably are a Clinton Democrat.

America became a rich nation because of its institutions and a motto that we will accept immigrants and give everyone a genuine shot to success. Again success maybe an immigrant from a war torn country or poor nation to earn a decent wage and raise a family or become a millionaire. But they have lost the way majorly because of Republicans. We the world admire America because it's a great nation that brings in immigrants and stood for something. I learnt America role in defeating nazi when in school & became instant admirer. Interesting and odd, my posting removed instantly. Re-posting, "Freedom of speech" must be honored.
The only differences of the element ingredients between the West and East is the "soul", "empathy", and virtue of basic "humanity" that the West never
equipped with to able make the world a better place. in short, a Culture without a "heart" and "spirit" instead of "rock N roll, drug and sex" couldn't bear the capacities making difference of
status quo. So, the story is not the 1% are greedy, yes, it is, But "Apathy" in DNA and in their blood failed to changed the world. Me, Me, Me Society is the "road block" for social change. That is, unless upheaval the transfixed culture system.Which literally impossible, the System works wonder, why change?
I often watched Anand. Last night I watched him thru this morning when sleep on and off. Guess what? I couldn't find any of Anand's program this morning on "UA-cam", even I copied down his program, but the videos I watched disappeared from my note. I finally google his book, and immediately the "UA-cam" has his program. scaring says the least. So they got in your brain is not a fairytale, it also, jaded proven, in my case, my thought occupied handicapped my normalities.
Talking is not able changes the ingrained DNA which made the people as whom they are. It is the "Culture" problems nothing else.

mmmm... we also know what other type MOST people want, but is it sustainable?? he never says it but he wants a more radical socialism in place of what we have now... I don't think socialism is a bd word per se, but how or why SHOULD anyone do that that is successful... if I got a SUCCESSFUL business and the government comes with this enforcement, I would reduce the business to a smaller level, and if the government continues with it, I would just close the business... Imagine you get a paycheque and you walk outside and some homeless person, or some alcoholic, or some unemployed person, approaches you and tells you that you MUST SHARE the money you just earned, it is justice and all that, what would you do??
This guy doesn't actually have or offer real solutions, he says shit like "a more equitable system..." what the hell does that mean!! I want to be on his side, and I even LIKE the guy but his actual talk is some mix of guru-motivational speaker, radicalism, and change inducing idea... but no real offerings in the way of THIS IS THE WAY TO SOLVE IT, implement this or that. Just asking that money be distributed more fairly is just hot air.

so you mean the top one percent not taking over three quarters of all assets is automaticly... homeless alcoholics taking your paychecks?!
what anand is talking about is not even socialism bro.
you need to break out of the red scare propaganda that is still affecting you world view.
you know, for an example: a single yacht for a super rich is costing millions of dollars. so maybe instead of letting one person have that, we build some housing and healthcare systems.
so YOU (of course only if youre not a billionair) are not gonna be bothered about your middle income check. in fact, the homeless alcoholic gets to be housed and medical help so he can do something productive.
not only do you not lose, everyone wins (except for the billionair class, who are at the moment robbing everyone else).

I want so badly to be on this guy's side.... but his bullshit makes no sense. He speaks of "justice" and taxing people more because they make more money, but he doesn't explain well WHY that is justice or fair or why if I work hard and earn more, why should I pay more on taxes other than what they already deduct from the paycheque.
If I open a business and is one of the one-in-ten that survives, and I risked money and time and effort and gave people jobs, why should I pay more on what my risk rewarded me with??
He gives anecdotes and gives a good talk about a sense of injustice but he never really explains exactly why that is unjust... I mean why don't the people with a job they don't like start their own business, what's stopping them, all he says is why it is hard for them or why it can't be done, "well, if you got two kids and have to ... you just can't do it"
If you actually listen to what he says and not how he makes you feel like a victim with the talk, you realise he makes no sense!!
Anand and most people here have nice sounding phrases about "doing what's right, etc etc" but no facts!!

There is absolutely nothing wrong being a victim. Lay off the Tony Robbinses and self-help for a while.
" I mean why don't the people with a job they don't like start their own business, what's stopping them,...."
Always the same trite and glib talking point.

The guy implies that if Soros had not made so much money speculating in the currency markets, that some poor people somewhere would have more money. That is utter noinsense. Soros getting rich did NOT make any poor people less rich.

Speculation does not build wealth, and causes many more losers than winners b. One way is to help confuse what's true value and what is not. When systems are opaque or confusing there is plenty of opportunity to cheat people and take far more than you should.

Which is why many of our systems are deliberately opaque. Case in point our medical system

Another point speculation helps to drive financial bubbles. If you have been awake you have seen the lost money for most people when the bubble pops
