    Just discovered this plant growing near my homestead. Harvested just the leaves and gave the flowers in a bouquet to my daughter. I chop the leaves, about one cup of them, pour boiling water over that, allow to stand 30 mins., and then I have soap. I do a good deal of my laundry outdoors on a wash board (a true bouncingbet) and I plan to use this soap during July/Aug when it’s in bloom.

      @@dalemountain5041 I use Soapwort or English Ivy. I like both, but soapwort works better for quick results. If you want to use English Ivy, you have to boil it for 30 minutes to get your detergent. However Ivy detergent will last longer. Also, you can use leaves of soapwort, once they are in bloom, to wash your hands - wet your hands, grab a leaf, rub your hands vigorously (it should lather up), and rinse. Rock Soapwort works also.

    The tiny village of Sapperton in Lincolnshire is interesting, it was devastated by the Black Death but previously, as it’s name implies Saponaria in Latin, produced soap probably for the local wool industry, a major source of wealth in the Middle Ages in this county. The plant is common in damp areas.

    Haven’t used this plant before, but there’s a large patch growing along a stream near my house. I might have to pick some and try it out soon.

    In my state, it's considered as invasive. I let rhe weeds grow & now I have bouncing bets all over. You're wasting the plant. Chop up the items & leaves as well. If you allow some flowers to dry, you can collect the seeds to replant. Here, it grows in ditches, fields, etc.

    Is soapwort safe ? I’m in the process of creating a natural face wash. I want it to have that sudsy/lather look your soapwort has in the video but I read the at saponins are toxic in it ?

    • @adriancyanide
      @adriancyanide 4 роки тому +3

      Toxic to eat/internalize just like normal soap. Not on your skin. Saponins will upset your stomach or worse.

    What climate does it grow in? Would it grow in desert type climate?

    • @Green-talk
      @Green-talk  Рік тому +1

      Zone 3 to 9. It needs afternoon shade in hotter climates. I don't think it would do well in the dessert.

    Does the soap have fragrant?

    • @Green-talk
      @Green-talk  6 років тому +3

      Unfortunately not when it is dried. When it is bloom, the flowers smell beautiful.

    • @emmccord398
      @emmccord398 6 років тому +5

      You can also add a couple drops of your favorite essential oil Dan, to give it a fragrance. I use Lavender and Bergamont when I make "soap" from Soapwort. It is so good for your hair, clothes, and body. It really makes your hair shiny and soft . Makes your skin soft as well. And Green Talk is spot on when she said it is great for wool clothing ! I wash my sweaters and coats in it. Just put your washer on gentle cycle and hang to dry. Soapwort is fantastic !
