watching the new All Quiet on the Western Front yesterday I was reminded of your accounts of Dante's hell; a cold desolate landscape of isolation, as depicted in the quiet moments between the war scenes; lonely soldiers fighting hunger and disease, the earth desolate, and surrounded with filth and mud. Even worse, the dread of a future without meaning or escape, the psychological wounds that must be dragged forward, and the burden of knowing the empty nihilism of war. as in dante and swift's struldbrugg's, it is the endless psychological burden that is hell, the knowing that man had paradise at his hand's reach, only to desirously birth unending devastation and loss
This analysis was much appreciated. Thank you. My love for the game series devil May cry with the protagonist Dante and the antagonist Vergil is what inspired me to watch this video
Brilliant explanation and perspective of Christian Theology about the transition of the first five Canto's which is purely based on misdirected love/selfish kind of love, and that of the Sixth to Ninth Canto's that is about the outright/willful rejection of truth.
Explaining Dante without reference to Catholic teaching, especially in Dante's time, completely misses an essential aspect of Dante's work since it is more than mere epic poetry. God bless.
