Nowadays, the gymnasts do some "ballet-like"-waves as if it was a useless duty,then they stop for seconds to concentrate on the next jump. No dancing art anymore, and no one seems to listen to the music or dance to the music. so sad. :( Nelli Kim was great!
Well they concentrate more on your tumbling skills now. Times have changed as does other things! If you want to watch more dance elements, watch college gymnastics!

I believe it was actually blue but for some reason it shows as purple in the footage. The Soviet gymnasts wore either Blue or Red tracksuits and leotards as their team colours.
What was the floor made of in those days? Nowadays you can see the super springiness when a gymnast merely steps on it. In Rio you could see the edges of the floor bounce up and flap around with the impact of the tumbling, but back then in the seventies, the floor area looked like a relatively hard surface with little 'give'. All the more amazing to see a double tuck back from the legendary Nelli, on a non-sprung floor!
Not very good coverage, but even with the terrible close ups I can tell it was a lovely routine. But seriously, can we all stop complaining about how gymnastics was sooo much better in those days?
I enjoy to see her execution a lot, she is perfect, she transmites many things: energy, vitality, elegance, grace, accuracy, precision, really great. She is the best those Olympic games!!!!.
Gymnastics history would be so different if Nellie had scored the first 10 and not Nadia. Although Nellie is very well known in the gymnastics world, so many people outside of gymnastics know (or know of) Nadia. I feel a bit sorry for her in a way. She was a beautiful gymnast with the most pretty face.

What a landing on that last diagonal. I've been following Olympic and gimnastics for years, and I've never seen anything like Comaneci and Kim. She has landed perfectly, on both foot at the same time. I'm not an expert, but I've never seen anything like those two. You are correct.Todays the gymnasts have more power like McKayla Maroney in the vault but she or the others can not sticktheir landings in a perfect position like Nellie Kim did.In the olympic games in 2012 i remember only the uneven bars when A.Mustafina got in a perfect position.Elisabeth Tweddle miss the gold with an awful landing.To me Nadja Comaneci her the beam routine in 1976 was much cleaner than in the olympics in 2012.I miss those gymnasts in 1976.Nadja and Nellie and the others

I painted picture of her on the balance beam I think and it was in the women's sports office in HS. I had a crush on her most likely. I was in HS I got those every 10 minutes.

Several of the biggest skills in the code from the double layout to the Chusovitina were debuted between the 80s-90s bearing in mind that the floor only became sprung in 1976. Skills such as the double layout, double front, Silivas and Chusovitina are all examples, yet none of these women had the bulky muscular physiques of some of the gymnasts you see not only today, but also of 6 years ago (when the OP was made). Even current gymnasts, Riley McCusker, Morgan Hurd, Trinity Thomas have very feminine physiques coupled with immense power. Bigger skills do not equate bigger muscles; bigger muscles are the result of the conditioning methods that were being used.

Perfection is always a relative thing--and her two closest competitors, Ludmilla and Nadia, had both scored at around 9.9 before Nelli's performance--so the judges found themselves in a position of more or less having to award the 10 to Nelli. That said, this routine would've been hard to mark down in any case.
No, I do agree with an earlier comment. It is pretty public that Nelli Kim underscored Silivas' routine. Those were the days when they showed the individual scores from the judges and you could see how biased the were. Even the commentators were very upset she did that. I'm sure the footage is one youtube somewhere. I lost respect for her after that as she favored the Russians with better scores.
+Bengt Boman if we are going to get technical, prior to the Soviet Union, it was Soviet Russia. Irregardless, this was not the point of my post. I don't respect Nellie Kim because as a judge (in my opinion) she was incredibly biased and awarded the higher scores to the Soviet Union and lower scores to other better deserving gymnasts from other countries. Of course now as spectators we don't see what each judge from their respective countries award (which is a shame in the name of transparency), but Kim had a reputation of scoring her own nation higher scores and giving slightly lower scores to the competition so her nation would win the medals. How can you respect someone that does that? Everyone turns a blinding eye to this, but the fact remains she was able to manipulate who won medals back in the day which enormously affected certain gymnasts in a very negative away. Ironically now, she lives in The United States and is in the gymnastics hall of fame.
Still a perfect routine though and not boring at all. Unlike most other gymnasts Nellie kept evolving her routines and changing her music, it kept it at the forefront of competition throughout her career

+Bengt Boman if we are going to get technical, prior to the Soviet Union, it was Soviet Russia. Irregardless, this was not the point of my post. I don't respect Nellie Kim because as a judge (in my opinion) she was incredibly biased and awarded the higher scores to the Soviet Union and lower scores to other better deserving gymnasts from other countries. Of course now as spectators we don't see what each judge from their respective countries award (which is a shame in the name of transparency), but Kim had a reputation of scoring her own nation higher scores and giving slightly lower scores to the competition so her nation would win the medals. How can you respect someone that does that? Everyone turns a blinding eye to this, but the fact remains she was able to manipulate who won medals back in the day which enormously affected certain gymnasts in a very negative away. Ironically now, she lives in The United States and is in the gymnastics hall of fame.
None of the 10's you posted are as original as the shapes and movements and surprises you made in your routines.. They dont compare.

Non of the other gymnasts performed a double somersault. That is why she was awarded the gold medal.

Unlike most other gymnasts Nellie kept evolving her routines and changing her music, it kept it at the forefront of competition throughout her career
