    The gymnasts in these times had much more flow in their movements and the whole exercise was like one piece of art. Nowadays, the gymnasts do some "ballet-like"-waves as if it was a useless duty,then they stop for seconds to concentrate on the next jump.
    No dancing art anymore, and no one seems to listen to the music or dance to the music.
    so sad. :(
    Nelli Kim was great!

    What was the floor made of in those days? Nowadays you can see the super springiness when a gymnast merely steps on it. In Rio you could see the edges of the floor bounce up and flap around with the impact of the tumbling, but back then in the seventies, the floor area looked like a relatively hard surface with little 'give'. All the more amazing to see a double tuck back from the legendary Nelli, on a non-sprung floor!

    What a landing on that last diagonal. I've been following Olympic and gimnastics for years, and I've never seen anything like Comaneci and Kim. She has landed perfectly, on both foot at the same time. I'm not an expert, but I've never seen anything like those two. @@annapavfan4680 Not to be rude, but you are incorrect. Several of the biggest skills in the code from the double layout to the Chusovitina were debuted between the 80s-90s bearing in mind that the floor only became sprung in 1976. Skills such as the double layout, double front, Silivas and Chusovitina are all examples, yet none of these women had the bulky muscular physiques of some of the gymnasts you see not only today, but also of 6 years ago (when the OP was made).
      Even current gymnasts, Riley McCusker, Morgan Hurd, Trinity Thomas have very feminine physiques coupled with immense power. Bigger skills do not equate bigger muscles; bigger muscles are the result of the conditioning methods that were being used.

      I quite agree, Nellie was always considered a power gymnast, but she looked so graceful.
      Her power made her vaults and floor routines look awesome.,it went against her slightly on the bars and particularly the beam, but her dismounts were still amazing

      No. It wasn’t. This was a beautiful routine. She deserved the 10.00.

    • @leightonsteven7059
      @leightonsteven7059 3 роки тому +3

      That would mean she needed to make 4 small mistakes to score 9.8
      She didn’t make any, you can’t even say the routine was easy.
      The 10 was deserved, as was her gold medal

    • @cherylannemason
      @cherylannemason 2 роки тому

      Perfection is always a relative thing--and her two closest competitors, Ludmilla and Nadia, had both scored at around 9.9 before Nelli's performance--so the judges found themselves in a position of more or less having to award the 10 to Nelli. That said, this routine would've been hard to mark down in any case.

    No, I do agree with an earlier comment. It is pretty public that Nelli Kim underscored Silivas' routine. Those were the days when they showed the individual scores from the judges and you could see how biased the were. Even the commentators were very upset she did that. I'm sure the footage is one youtube somewhere. I lost respect
    for her after that as she favored the Russians with better scores.

    • @bengtboman8182
      @bengtboman8182 8 років тому +10

      pappysprite Yes of course, but Soviet Union was not Russia. It consists of many different areas that today are different countries.

    • @pappysprite
      @pappysprite 8 років тому +3

      +Bengt Boman if we are going to get technical, prior to the Soviet Union, it was Soviet Russia. Irregardless, this was not the point of my post. I don't respect Nellie Kim because as a judge (in my opinion) she was incredibly biased and awarded the higher scores to the Soviet Union and lower scores to other better deserving gymnasts from other countries. Of course now as spectators we don't see what each judge from their respective countries award (which is a shame in the name of transparency), but Kim had a reputation of scoring her own nation higher scores and giving slightly lower scores to the competition so her nation would win the medals. How can you respect someone that does that? Everyone turns a blinding eye to this, but the fact remains she was able to manipulate who won medals back in the day which enormously affected certain gymnasts in a very negative away. Ironically now, she lives in The United States and is in the gymnastics hall of fame.
