🤩 OMG! I used to be completely OBSESSED with Ray Lynch's DEEP BREAKFAST back in da '80s! 🎶 Good Memories, man -- THANK YOU for Reminding me of that Album 🥰 I'm certain I still have that CD around somewhere... 🤔
Hey Jef, it's been a minute but great FM synthesis explanation.. When i learn that an operator is similar to an oscillator years ago. A whole new world opened up for me on FM8 and FM synthesis in general. Had a DX7 back in 2005. What a beast and heavy synth !!
No doubt! Solid synth, which is probably why so many are around that still work! FM8 is a great virtual instrument as well. Also check out Dexed for a free version of the original DX7! (even loads DX7 patches)
@@jefgibbons I like what I see, definitely. Just need to decide if I should just buy it outright or rent-to-own ,, or sub to reason+. I have the full Suite purchase so, yeah, the dilemma lol :)
@@lokologico Yeah for sure... worth trying the month, play around a bit for free, then decide. I hope it's the next update of Reason that's really going to make the sub worth it for Suite owners... they're going to need to pull out all the stops on that next version!
Great informative video, I really like its sound. Please can you tell me what MONITOR are you using ? My sight vision is deteriorating a lot and I would like to get one similar size to yours and would you recommend the manufacturer of it ? Many thanks Atir.
Thanks for this! Are all your reason vids inside of Cubase? I'm jumping to Reason with Reason+ and wish I could find a full tutorial on composing a full track then mixing (maybe even mastering?) in Reason. There aren't any on youtube that aren't 10 years old.
No, I’ve got a recent vid in reason, go back to the Fall and you’ll see it. Not a full tutorial, but it might help! Then go check out kickback couture, she’s a great reason you tuber!
No videos? Reason Experts have a great 17 parts series here on UA-cam only focusing only on mixing and mastering for Reason 10.2 (not much have changed to 11)! It's actually a full course! ua-cam.com/video/AOvh6ijy8Cc/v-deo.html
@@Magnus_Loov Those videos unfortunately are rambling, not great quality, you don't really compose a song, so you skip the part about choosing the right presets/samples and explaining why, and the song being mastered is some messy trance track that I can't relate to at all. For Ableton there are plenty of modern tutorials showing how to simply produce a track from scratch and make it sound good. And the songs can be remakes of big hits today or just high quality modern songs. We need this for Reason but people stopped doing that ages ago.
@@compteprivefr It is still going through the fundamentals. And that only takes an hour or two of your time all for free. There is a manual too, that is quite good actually! There's lots of stuff out there for reason, you just have to put some effort into it to. You can't expect to be served everything!
@@Magnus_Loov Yes I'm not saying its worthless, but just because there's that and there's a manual doesn't mean i can't also wish for high quality tutorials of the kind I'm asking for, which for Reason are pretty much non-existent.
You could probably get almost any decent LCD TV at this point and have good success with it. Or any of the newer models. Samsung has been pretty reliable for the TVs we've purchased...
@@jefgibbons Thanks for the tip, but it is quite surprising to read up on Trustpilot about Dell, LG, Samsung and others. When you see daily negatives of one star, it makes me quite perplexed to which one to purchase for reliability. If there is only 1 or 2 negatives daily, that's to be expected, but many more isn't that promising ? All the same, l'll need to take the plunge soon and make a decision.
There was reasonable hype around Algoritm a while ago, especially within Reason DAW uses. A lessor extent with Reason Rack and other DAW favs. Any thoughts on alternative FM synths today? I find a lot of synths now have a fairly robust FM feature built in - like Arturia (Pigments), NI, and old reliable DeXEd.
Jeff. what monitor are you using for your studio? is that a flatscreen tv? I've seen more and more people using flatscreens for their studio and wondering the pros and cons. I've been using 2 monitors for years, tools on one monitor and work on the other. I also do design as well as music.
I really wish they would put the min version of reason required for ALL rack extensions on their store without any exceptions, Does it work on Reason 11? I'm not upgrading to 12 yet, the value proposition is insulting.
Hi Jef, i Sm curious to know whether your monitor is actually a monitor or are you using a tv as monitor ... either way , could you share the model ? Thank you .
What’s on the back end of this plug-in? One of the best things about Reason plugins are the modularity on the back. Does it have an input to process other audio signals through it or only out puts? I guess I’ll have to download the demo.
Great video Jef. I can show this to my synth students when they want to learn what FM synthesis is about. I also discovered Deep Breakfast from Ray Lynch because you mention it. Do you happen to know what other synths were used on the album exept the omnipresent DX7? I think I hear something like a Jupiter but also sounds that remind me of a string machine with mod-fx. But wait, you had the album on tape, so you probably don't have the credits at hand :-).
Nice video. That looks like an interesting take on FM, mixed in with other goodies. It looks like it's $99 for those that are not on the Reason+ train.
Hi Jef. Many thanks for this. Two questions from my end. (1) How does this synth compared to for instance Native Instruments FM8 or Arturia DX7? and (2) How do you hear (if possible at all) the difference between a analogue synth, FM synth and a wavetable synth?
Excellent questions! I don't use FM8 enough, and haven't dug into the Arturia one enough. I want to do a full FM video with those synths and the original DX7 as well as Dexed (free FM synth). The thing that usually distinguishes FM synths is the weird harmonics which creates bell-like tones, otherwise it can definitely achieve analog-sounding tones as well.

Dang, thanks Peter!
Jef--this was an excellent compliment to the Reason Studio Algorithm live stream. Thanks!
This is such a fantastic explanation of FM. Really helped me understand it and this synth.
