To be fair, the guy riding forth with forty men and a mage turned pale after hearing your name and immediately started trying to bribe you with anything he could think off. Some self-confidence is warranted.
This is dope, man. I *love* how Heather will act out the different roles, as she sings. Like, her voice will get deeper, lighter, angrier...it's pretty awesome.
I listen to this song daily it has an amazing message behind it. This one, threes, the cost of the crown, advice to young magicians, philosophy, and one of us I have them on a playlist and listen to them every morning before starting my day
This actual incident doesn't occur in the novels...it is set between books 1 and 2 and is presumably one of the events Vanyel refers back to in the first chapters of Magic's Promise...he does mention turning demons back on the Karsite lands, but doesn't elaborate...Hardor and Lord Nedron don't appear.
Ok, just to say, I'm not affiliated or anything with them, but you can find most Mercedes Lackey stuff on a site called Firebird Arts. They make companions, carry the cd's, some signed books at times, and other Valdemar stuff. I'm not sure of the exact URL but googling them should find it fairly easily. Hope this helps anyone. :)
this is soo neat ive never heard this before and ive read some of these books especially this one i remember crying at several parts in this series it's beautiful
Along the road in Hardorn, The place called Stony Tor A fearful band of farmers Flees Karsite border war A frightened band of farmers, Their children and their wives Seek refuge from a tyrant who Wants more than just their lives Now up rides Herald Vanyel, "Why then such haste?" says he "Now who is it pursuing, Who's anger do you flee? You are all of Hardorn Why seek you Valdemar? Is Festel no protection Or bide all his men too far?" "Oh Vanyel, Herald Vanyel, We flee now for our lives Lord Nedrin would enslave us Our children and our wives He'd give our souls to demons Our bodies to his men King Festel has not heeded Or he happens not to ken!" Now up speaks Herald Vanyel "The border is not far But you are all of Hardorn And not of Valdemar You are not Randale's people Can call not on his throne -- But damned if I will see you left So helpless on your own!" So forth goes Herald Vanyel And onward does he ride On Stony Tor he waits then Yfandes at his side With Nedrin's men approaching He calls out from on high: "You shall not pass, Lord Nedrin Nay, I shall not let you by!" Now only Herald Vanyel Stands blocking Nedrin's way "Now who are you, fool - Nothing! That dares to tell me nay!" Now up speaks Herald Vanyel, His voice like brittle glass: "The Herald Mage called Vanyel And 'tis I you shall not pass!" Now there stands great Lord Nedrin Behind him forty men With wizard there beside him He pales and speaks again "So you are Herald Vanyel This place is not your land So heed me Herald Vanyel And now turn aside your hand! "Let be: I'll give you silver And I shall give you gold And I shall give you jewels fair That sparkle bright and bold And I shall give you pearls All treasures of the sea If you will step aside here Leaving these poor fools to me!" "What need have I of silver With sweet Yfandes here? And all the gold I cherish Is sunlight bright and clear The only jewel I treasure Is a bright and shining star -- And I protect all helpless Not just those of Valdemar!" "Now I shall give you beauty Women, slaves, and men And I shall give you power You'll never see again! And I shall give you mansions, And I shall give you land If you will turn aside this day Aside and hold your hand!" "Now beauty held in bondage Is beauty that is lost And land and mansions blood-bought Come too high at the cost The power I have already All power is a jade -- So turn you back Lord Nedrin If of me you are afraid!" Lord Nedrin backs his stallion, The wizard he comes nigh "Prepare yourself bold Vanyel, For you shall surely die!" The wizard calls his demons The demons he commands And Vanyel, Herald Vanyel Lonely raises empty hands! The wizard calls his demons, The sky above turns black: The demons strike at Vanyel - He stands and holds them back! The demons strike at Vanyel They strike and hurt him sore But Vanyel stands defiantly To raise his hands once more! The sky itself descends now Upon bare Stony Tor It hides the awful battle The watchers see no more The wizard shouts in triumph Too soon he vents his mirth For Vanyel calls the lightning down And smites him to the earth! The clouds of black have lifted And there on barren ground Stands Vanyel, hurt yet victor, The demons tied and bound He looks down on Lord Nedrin His eyes grow cold and bleak "Now I shall give you Nedrin All the power that you seek!" Now Vanyel frees the demons And Nedrin screams with fear He sets them on the Karsites Who first had brought them here He sets them on the Karsites And on the Karsite land They look down on Lord Nedrin And they do not stay their hand! Now Vanyel calls the farmers "Go tell you near and far How thus are served the tyrants Who would take Valdemar! I am the bane of demons Their quarry I defend Thus Heralds serve a foeman And thus Heralds save a friend!"
dixievfd55 +FATEd Pondera I'd say it's more a case of "this is how you play a good character." While a paladin might be a paragon of those virtues, they aren't the only one who can extol being good.
man this is amazing. i'm a huge fan of the valdemar series i have all the books but i had no idea the mercedes lackey could write songs as well as she crafts a story. this song is amazing and the singer does an excellent job.
I was so happy to discover the lyrics to this in the back of my copy of Magic's Price. Now I can sing it whenver I want, cuz its a pretty awesome song.
I read the books back in highschool like 6-8 years ago and collected most of the Valdemar novels since then. |D I need to get her newer ones though. Its funny that I just started rereading Van's stories this week. I for got how much his story touched me as a teen an made me really think about things.
It seems sad to me. I am unable to listen to any of these song without crying. It does not matter what the song is about, I always wind up thinking to the depressing parts of the books.
I got the whole set from a book store that was going out of bussness, and had them all read by the end of the month. Failed my exams but know the whole history of the Herald-Mage. But just found out that there were Cds.
You can get most of the songs from Mercedes Lackey's Calendar series from Firebird Arts, though I have found one or two of the CDs on Amazon fit a decent price.
I have, and that's why I want to compose my own set of music, preserving the lyrics. you wouldn't havppen to know how to contact mercedes lackey or firebird?
At least you have the whole series I only have the last one I had all three but my sis*Glares at sister* Took them, hide them and now we can't find them.
hmm, I usually dislike modern of the celtic/bardic songs, for none can give the feel that the real stuff has. But Misty Lackey is good, and Heather Alexander can give it the true feel
this is good battle music I would pay 100.00 dollars for all the songs in a volume of every song this auther sings I would buy it and be happy who wants to sell me all the songs?
"So turn YOU back Lord Nedren if of me you are afraid!"
That's complete self-confidence right there.
To be fair, the guy riding forth with forty men and a mage turned pale after hearing your name and immediately started trying to bribe you with anything he could think off. Some self-confidence is warranted.
I love this song, and how it fills in some of the gaps between Pawn and Promise, showing why Vanyel had the reputation he did in Promise.
This is dope, man. I *love* how Heather will act out the different roles, as she sings. Like, her voice will get deeper, lighter, angrier...it's pretty awesome.

why would i need silver? i have a psychic horse.
i think this every time i hear this song.

This Harald Vanyel sounds like a decent fellow, nice of him to help those people...

lackey rock's i love all the filk songs and all her books
this song is so addicting...i cant...stop...listening...!!! *_*
That's how you play a paladin people.
FATEd Pondera Yet the song portrays him showing the ideals and attitude of a paladin. Not all knights wear armor.
dixievfd55 +FATEd Pondera I'd say it's more a case of "this is how you play a good character." While a paladin might be a paragon of those virtues, they aren't the only one who can extol being good.
+Penniwhistle I'd go slightly farther, I'd say this is the proof that Lawful Good does not equal Lawful Stupid.
+FATEd Pondera Of course, he lied. That's just part of the franchise...
he's a mage. paladins dont bind demons.
man this is amazing. i'm a huge fan of the valdemar series i have all the books but i had no idea the mercedes lackey could write songs as well as she crafts a story. this song is amazing and the singer does an excellent job.
this is a powerful song
This is one of best set of books I have read!
Love this, must go read the series again, I'd forgotten how epic some pieces are.
I was so happy to discover the lyrics to this in the back of my copy of Magic's Price. Now I can sing it whenver I want, cuz its a pretty awesome song.

I ❤️ love this song so much.
He's such a talented musician!
This was Amazing!
I need to here more songs from Valdemar.I can't find enough!
Awesome.
It seems sad to me. I am unable to listen to any of these song without crying. It does not matter what the song is about, I always wind up thinking to the depressing parts of the books.
Holy shit. This is amazing.

Heather Alexander is awesome! She lay it to da bone like butta to da bread.
my sister jokes that Vanyel got Gandalf mad at him for stealing his ' you shall not pass' line and thats who he fought
good good book, good song
I have, and that's why I want to compose my own set of music, preserving the lyrics. you wouldn't havppen to know how to contact mercedes lackey or firebird?
I checked out the Last of the Herald Mages from the library because of this song.
I get it!Tylendel and Vanyel!
excellent! Do you have any others such as "Only the Music"?
@abbymorgan thanks :) i'll go search for it!
I love the lone ranger reference at 2:40
@BrotherLucifer Especially when it's an unintended reference, right?
Ok, now I'm REALLY having trouble picking a favorite lackey song.....
I wonder if this song was an inspiration for Planetside game series. One of the faction's name is Vanu.
At least you have the whole series I only have the last one I had all three but my sis*Glares at sister* Took them, hide them and now we can't find them.
And the books were SO FUCKING GOOD TOO
I am looking for some more good Celtic/ bardic music any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
@alamandyzara I have been wondering that too, I want all of them :)
lol, same way as to how i started reading them xD
Where can I find these Albums? I really want them!
Listen to "Mis-Conceptions" and you'll really have a much harder time ... :-D
...?
hmm, I usually dislike modern of the celtic/bardic songs, for none can give the feel that the real stuff has. But Misty Lackey is good, and Heather Alexander can give it the true feel
I want a book of cds for 50.00 of all the these songs and i would give you 50.00 extra if it is in the next two months
this is good battle music
I would pay 100.00 dollars for all the songs in a volume of every song this auther sings I would buy it and be happy who wants to sell me all the songs?
I think 'bitch' is spelled with an 'i'.
